Mess Deck Fashion Show. France, and especially the French Navy, played a decisive role in the American Revolution. AS a sidelight, she was the first nation to recognize and salute the American flag. On many occasions, and particularly in this century, the United States and French Navies have been comrades in arms. Toulon is said to have been founded by the Phoenicians, the first great sea merchants. It has been a fortified naval base since the sixteenth cen- tury and several major naval and military engage- ments have been fought there. A combined French and Spanish fleet defeated the British off Toulon in 1744, and fifty years later Napoleon won his first notable victory there by defeating a combined Eng- lish and Spanish force. During World War II the French scuttled part of their fleet in Toulon to pre- vent its falling into German hands. Toulon is today homeport for a large part of the French Navy and is a center of naval education and training. The well-equipped naval shipyard located there has on occasion been used by units of the Sixth Fleet. Toulon is also the Headquarters of the Third Maritime District of France.
