Forum We were all profoundly impressed by a vis- it to Pompeii, on the slopes of Vesuvius. The life of the city - 25,000 souls - was snuffed out by a volcanic eruption in 79 A.D. and Pompeii lay buried in ashes for seventeen hundred years. We have sensed the presence of those many peoples who perished within minutes, their meals still on the tables, their tools left where they died. I With two-thirds of the city excavated, many discoveries have been made. Typical are pe- destrian crosswalks with gaps cut in the step- ping stones to allow chariots to pass. Thus, we witnessed one of the first forms of traffic regulation. Many structures reveal the way of life of Old Pompeii - the Great Theatre, the Odeon, the Temple of Isis, the Forum, and the House of the Gilded Cupid. Paintings on the walls allow us to peer into the lives of the Pompeiians. T We come away from Pompeii with a sense of the fleeting nature of man's life and yet with the feeling that man in each age has a per- manent impact on the world about him.
