Our visits to Naples, whether on board ship or during weekend trips from Gaeta, proved to be unique experiences. Who can forget the traffic jams on Neapolitan streets during rush hours, or the crush of people going places - seemingly in all directions at once? On the other hand, who can forget the friendliness of the people and the beauty of Naples Bay on a clear day? A long and varied history has given Naples many castles, mon- asteries, and other landmarks of great interest and often of great beau- ty. As we travel through the city we see evidence of each of the con- querors who have ruled there. The old quarters of Spacca in the heart of Naples, with its narrow, noisy, and crowded streets, is a page out of the past. Castel Nuovo, familiar to all, opposite fleet landing, was built in 1282. Castle S. Elmo, overlooking the harbor, was built by the Spanish in the sixteenth century. Outside Naples the palace at Caserta and the magnificent Abby at Montecassino have excited our imag- inations. The beauty spots of Amalfi, Sorrento, Capri, and Ischia re- main long in our memories. Of course, one cannot see Naples without being aware of the dark shape of Vesuvius dominating the city. Mindful of the fate of Pompeii on its lower slopes, we have wondered how long Vesuvius will remain asleep. ' However Naples affects us, none of us will forget out many visits there.
