We found Istanbul to be one of the most intriguing and exotic of all the ports in the Mediterranean. The city stands at one of the main crossroads of the World. There, Europe meets Asia, East meets West. The swift flowing Bosphorus drains the Black Sea of waters col- lected from all over Central and Western Europe and European Russia. Istanbul has stood for two thousand years and boasts a history as varied as the names it has borne: Byzantium to the Greeks, New Rome to Con- stantine, Constantinople to succeeding generations, and Istanbul to the modern World. The city has been the capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. We saw much of the old world and the new in Istan- bul. Countless mosques with their graceful minarets dot the city. Familiar to all were St. Sophia's and the Blue Mosque. Museums recreated for us the historyfof Istan- bul. The riches of the Sultans were revealed to us in Topkapi Palace and the Dolmabache Palace. For the souvenir hunter or the bargain hunter there was no more fascinating place than the Bazaar in Old Istanbul. Whatever the interest, whether it was history, ar- chitecture, art, shopping, or studying the fantastic mix- ture of peoples, Istanbul was truly one of the most var- ied and exciting places in the World. I
