i i K 1 www' ,, , ..,. ' fawgi. T, .?'i' 'fffifi .f.-,-,y 4. i L Z., 4 , , fa, f Florence has much important history with- in its walls. It was famous during the Middle Ages as the banking capital of the World. One family of bankers, the Medici brothers, pro- vided the dynamic force behind the tremendous upsurge of Italian art. Such names as the es- sayist Machiavelli, the painters Giotto, Fra Angelico, Michaelangelo, Raphael and De Vinci, and the sculptors Donatello and Cellini, are all closely tied in with the city's colorful history. Florence, with its priceless art and liter- ary treasures, is a touristls paradise. We were unable to resist the excellent shops. Fine craftsmen in leather, straw, gold and silver made it hard for us to return to the ship emp- ty-handed. ' 5 , rs-,Qwxxl , ,rx A . ,f. .Q si, ' :W Q K 15 'LR ggi? wunnfm-u-our-'f' mi.:1'fg U.. Before the dawn of history, Malta was a most welcome refuge to seafaring men caught in the sudden, violent storms common in the Mediterranean. Today, the islands still offer snug harbors and many excellent facilities for visiting ships, including a well equipped dock- yard. Malta has been occupied successively by the Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Sicilians, Normans, Argonese, Castilians, the French and the British. Malta is now independent, although still a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. In Malta we found cathedrals, museums, theaters and other buildings rich in friezes, ornaments, paintings and carvings. The beau- tiful Blue Grotto Cave was a memorable at- traction. In the Mediterranean, Malta holds a special attraction for the United States Navyman. The British influence on language and customs has been very great. The Maltese are most hos- pitable and we felt very much at home there. Malta Annoury Hall,
