Monterosso al Mare. . La Spezia was the largest Italian Naval' Base during World War II. It is still .an gim- portant trading port and iron ore industrial center today. V Built on a ridge between two fertile val- leys, La Spezia is surrounded by beautiful countryside. We saw fine examples of medieval architecture in several towns close by. Within the city we relaxed in attractive gardens, while on the outskirts we marvelled at the famous quarries from which come the marble used by master sculptors for centuries. La Spezia is only a short distance from the beautiful cities of Pisa and Florence and those of us with cam- eras or an interest in the arts found visiting these celebrated cities an exciting experience-

It was famous during the Middle Ages as the banking capital of the World. One family of bankers, the Medici brothers, pro- vided the dynamic force behind the tremendous upsurge of Italian art. Such names as the es- sayist Machiavelli, the painters Giotto, Fra Angelico, Michaelangelo, Raphael and De Vinci, and the sculptors Donatello and Cellini, are all closely tied in with the city's colorful history. Florence, with its priceless art and liter- ary treasures, is a touristls paradise. We were unable to resist the excellent shops.
