BURNHAM The Combat Information Center CCICJ is one of LITTLE ROCK's nerve centers. The censors which provide CIC with raw information include radars, sonar and electronic countermeasures equipment. Added to those sources are lookout reports, radio and intel- ligence messages and standard fleet operating procedures and doctrine. With this variety of information, CIC personnel provide evaluated recommendations for use by the Bridge in situations from man-over- board through search and rescue and aircraft control up to task force tactical operations, naval gunfire support and missile firing. I As is true throughout the ship, machines and equipment are tools of our profession but it is thinking personnel who make decisions. Highly trained and motivated radarmen and sonarmen provide the skill to evaluate and disseminate the information collected in CIC. They are backed by dedicated electronics technicians QETSJ who are always on call in case of equipment malfunction. The variety of LITTLE ROCK's electronics installations is such that ETS are to be found any time, swinging from a mast or crawling through the ship, in their continuing job of keeping the ship's electronics equipment up . The scheduling and coordination required for LITTLE ROCK's replenishments and tactical operations at sea, the arranging of ser- vices for competitive exercises and drills and planning for port visits are additional Operations Department functions. The Department's Yeoman keep the necessary records and assist in tying the admin- istration together. The pride in achievement of the entire Department is exemplified by the Operations Yeoman's slogan of OPS IS TOPS . 4
