130 LCDR F. W. HALE ENGIN RING DEPA TMENT When steam engines replaced sails, engineers became important, Today, the LITTLE ROCK is powered by four main engines, capable of producing 100,000 horsepower and making speeds in excess of 32 knots. The job of making the ship go - controlling the heartbeat for im- mediate response to the Conning Officer - is immensely complicated. The Engineering Department's divisions operate, repair, and main- tain all the ship's propulsion machinery. At the same time they also furnish ventilation, light, refrigeration, compressed air, water and electrical power, all the utilities which make life aboard ship possible and comfortable. In the event of ship control casualty, hull damage, fire or flooding, Engineering is there to restore seaworthiness, power, and maneuverability. LT M. W. GUNDERSEN LT J. C. COCKRAM ENS R. L.
