M f Homecoming excitement reached its peak as doors were decorated, floats were completed, and the homecom- ing court appeared, but true excitement came as our first homecoming queen was selected, crowned and kissed. r,i tmv —” FRESHMAN BEAUTIES AND ESCORTS -______, The freshman Beauties for 1978 were, above: Miss Julie McGiathery escorted by Mr. Joel Samuels. This year's Homecoming sparked the beginning of a long awaited tradition for Litchfield and of course the traditional ques- tion, “I wonder who will be next year’s Home- coming Queen?” NA TIONAL HONOR SOCIETY New Members Tapped New members confirmed their acceptance as they signed the traditional scroll that listed their names as a part of Litchfield’s National Honor Society. After the tapping ceremony and sign- ing up new members the students and parents were guests at a reception held in Litchfield’s library. National Honor Society Pictured With New Members Marisa Stanley got the 1977 Christmas Ball under way with a warm welcome to “Luv and Haight” who provided the music for our dance while Lori Perry sang Merry Christmas Darling” to put us in a festive mood. CHRISTMAS SPIRIT 1977 Passing water balloons and rolling toilet paper takes a lot of guts to risk getting soaked clothes or skinned noses, but it is better than begging for mercy from the cold-hearted Twirp Court jury. Counting off the paces marks the beginning of an endless water battle between students as well as Twirp Court members seeking revenge against teachers during the activities. Lisa Williamson and Clifton Simpson reigned as the first queen and king ever in the his- tory of Litchfield High School at our coronation ball. Above: Clif- ton demonstrates that choosing his queen was as simple as one, two, three. 72 The royal couple took the excitement in stride as they made their way to the dance floor where they led off the sec- ond half of the fun filled evening and danced with the rest of the crowd and coronation court before they assumed their reign as king and queen. FIRST STEP Now tomorrow is here And not quite as desperate As it seemed to be. . . back when we heard “There’s a big world out there. ” And it was waiting on us With wide opened arms And few smiling faces. And there is a feeling Of accomplishment, As we wind down Out of adolescence into maturity. Some falter. . . And fall into silly grins, While others, with their own tears Wash the faces of friends. But we file on and on. In cap and gown we take the paper That shouts in its significance What we may verbalize in our magnificence As our last And echoing Hurray. . . And good-bye comes in choked terms And throats that are cleared and eyes rubbed. But the end we thought was here Is now seen to be a beginning As we turn our glance upward And take our first step We can proudly call Our very own. Band. This season’s 6-4 record captured a long- awaited victory over Litchfield’s 7 rival, the Glencoe Yellow Jackets, and the dream of being in the State 3A Playoffs became a real- Never let it be said that the Eagles don’t have a prayer — they start every game on their knees and it serves them well with perfect kick-offs and equally coordinated tackles. It was a battle between rivals as the Litchfield Eagles took on the Glencoe Yellow Jackets and even though some of the game was rough, the Eagles got tough and came out on top. Litchfield’s Anticipated But Unexpected Victory Stuns Glencoe 102 Touchdowns had come easily for the Eagles and Frank Wester (80) helped chalk up all the extra points needed to give Litchfield a nice round score that killed Glencoe’s ego and their chance for the State Playoffs. With one second on the clock the scoreboard indicates that the night belongs to Litchfield as Glencoe accepts defeat from the Eagles 28-18. This season went well for the Eagles even though there were some injuries. None of them were serious enough to keep this team of fighters off their toes for long. In the end anyone who went to a football game can tell you the Eagles always get their man no matter what. WHTney Tlson LITCHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL EAGLE BAND These past years have meant changes in our school and our band. Last year the first high school football schedule went into force and the L.H.S. Band was there to perform a full season of high school level halftime shows. The band members worked very hard and gave an excellent accounting of themselves as well as the color guard members who added color and flair to the musical presenta- tions. The highlight of the year was a four day trip to Florida where the band performed at the famous Walt Disney World. Also, in their first year of high school level competition, the Litchfield High School Band was awarded seven “Superior” ratings and eight “Excellent ratings. The band has always represented Litchfield and Gadsden in an outstanding manner and has brought much credit to our school. 125 The Eagle Band gave many fine performances this year and they were all under the direction of Drum Major Terri Bohannon. Terri has been directing the band on field for the past two years and has done an excellent job. No one could lead the band with more spirit and pride, Terri will certainly be hard to replace and the band will not seem the same without her. M2 zom JfzE Sditoz TO THE STUDENTS OF LITCHFIELD As Editor of the Talon Yearbook I have been a part of Litch- field’s annual staff since 1976 when our first yearbook was pub- lished. The work it takes to publish Talon is almost impossible to describe. I have written and drawn every page of this yearbook myself over the summer working on it as much as nine hours a day non-stop. The reason I had no help is because the rest of the staff sold themselves to death to finance the cost of publishing which was approximately seven and a half thousand dollars. A yearbook this size with countless pages of special effects is expensive and filled with detailed, time consuming work. To insure an early fall delivery for Talon ’79, please support the year- book staff whole-heartedly, your support does not end with your subscription. Susan Dodson SPECIAL THANKS I would like to thank the following people for making my job easier by naming students as they were pictured in various organizations and activities, and also giving information about special awards and club activities.
