The February class of l939 no doubt looks back and Won- ders how the time could have passed so rapidly. Only yesterday you Were shy, timid freshmen with the high school course before you. All the fine times you have had, all the growth you have made should have been in the direction of better living. All have not made high records as far as school subjects are concerned, but each one in this class should be a better citizen because of the four years spent at Lindblom. Classes come and go but each class is the best and each year book the outstanding one. It is well that prin- cipals and teachers feel that Way about it. The joy of teaching comes in find- ing each group of young people differ- ent from all others. If We tell you that you are the best yet, please do not misunderstand us. As a class you have helped main- tain the high traditions of Lindblom. May you go out into life upholding these high standards and carrying out many of the fine suggestions that have been made to you during the past four years. Lindblom looks forward to the time when it will proudly say, That young man or young Woman was a member of a graduating class at Lindblom High School. I INVEST IN YCDURSELF The members of the Senior Class of February l939 will soon be departing from Lindblom to face new problems and new opportunities. One problem which already may have demanded some attention and which will become increasingly important with the pass- ing years is that of investment. On this age-old subject our graduates would do well to harken to the counsel of a great teacher, adversity, who for the past decade has been among us constantly trying to impart wisdom. Invest in yourself, says this teacher. Invest in the resources of the mind and the skill of the hands and your capital will survive unim- paired. Invest your money in an edu- cation. Spend it for culture. Buy knowl- edge and hope for wisdom. Acquire good books, study them carefully and make friends among the great minds of the world. Attend exhibitions and concerts, know science and develop a taste for the fine arts. Travel, study man and the institutions he has built throughout the ages. Money invested in a bond or stock may bring a few dollars yearly, but the same sum in- vested in acquiring knowledge or skill will bring immeasurable profit and pleasure as long as you live. An in- vestment in yourself is in a business you can always watch and control. Booms cannot inflate it and depres- sions cannot destroy it. Friends can- not borrow it, thieves cannot steal it. For centuries the wise have heeded these instructions and profited. May you be numbered among the wise. Soon we were very much at ease, and before long we were cutting up, and trying to assume all the airs of the seniors. Freshy days changed to sophomore and then, at last, We were upper classmenl When we entered ourjunior year we were put under the guiding hand of our sponsor, Mr. Small. Along with his coming came the elec- tion of our first class officerse,LQher Cooper.- ridg, Presidentg Bernadine Swanian, Vice- Presidenty Marjorie Dejong, Secretaryg and Francis Anderson, Treasurer. Our 3A leaders were George Ceithaml, Earl West, Viola Tib- bits, and Myron Anderson. In our senior year we moved into the Audi- torium where Earl Phillips, Marion Stears, Betty Fric, and Stuart Oliver led us through our very full and exciting 4B semester, while Grant Olson, Norma Gallier, Emily Popelka, and joseph Morano took us through our last one. Those who desired to develop their literary talents chose either the Eagle or the Weekly. The Eagelites were Helen Thiernann, Audrey Gehrke, Dorothy Schoenhofen, Walter Lowe, Luther Cooperrider, janet Hansen, Norma Gal- lier, and Marion Stears, while jarvis Friduss, jack Berngard, Blanche Baim, Lorraine Serp, Lillian Gavlas, Emily Popelka, Alice Carroll, and Louise Meeder chose the Weekly. The distinguished red jackets were worn by Mary Baumgartner, Marjorie Dejong, Lucilf Graf, june Matha, Marion Stears, Bernadine Swanson, Viola Tibbits, Norma Gallier, and Doris Kroupa. Those honored by membership on the Boys' Council were Myron Anderson, jack Berngard, George Ceithaml, Willard Con- greve, ,Luther,, , Rudolph jesek, Grant Olson, and Robert Strating. On the gridiron were George Ceithaml, Myron Anderson, Francis Anderson, Frank I-loblick, joseph Morano, Edward Davis, Curtis johnson, Lawrence Pote, Edward Roehrick, Robert Gibson, james Greybar, Robert Blank, Fred Giltner, Edward Czorniak, and Howard Saar. The girls on the G.A.A. Cabinet were janet Hansen, josephine Blaha, Lorayne Marek, Margaret Lamont, Florence Keslik, Rose Fonte, and Berenice Russell. Individual honors go to those two who won the achievement L cups-josephine Blaha and George Ceitharnl. And so our history is completed. We leave Lindblom regretfully, and as the years roll by, we will gaze fondly back on four years of happy' memories and cherished friendships. Barrister: Historian VIOLA TIBBITS MARION STEARS Ianuary, l939 FLASH! We, the graduates of Lindblom in order to form a more perfect student body, establish sportsmanship, insure fair thinking, provide for school spirit, promote Lindblom's traditions, and secure the knowledge and personality development in our classrooms, do pass on these rules and regulations to our successors: To the up and coming 4As we leave the boys' and girls' gym for a bigger, better and more successful prom, which will be held in the daytime. Remember, no bids to the alumnael but all joking aside we sincerely hope your semester of Senior-dumb will be cherished for many a year-Cand we do mean you.D To the 4Bs we give you Cwith pleorsurel Mr. Willard C100 per cent interest on tardy home- work? lohnston. To the 2As We render this bit of advice: ' ln going through the hall Your haste should be concealed Remember you're not a half back Charging up and down the field. For the 2Bs we have especially designed the southern Wing of the lunchroom-the architect being the same as that for the Brown Derby- and seeing as how we are against Roosevelt and his unemployment policy Cplease supply own name of partyl We have employed several present 4A waiters to provide you with every convenience you desire. To the lAs and lBs, remember! In case of fire, don't be alarmed-because green things don't burn. The audience showed their appreciation, realizing what they were seeing was not just one production but three separate, really fine bits of dramatic performance. As the curtains parted for the first act, which was directed by Mrs. Hannah Rosenthal, the audience was treated to a glance into the workings of a modern, exclusive night club. The swanky joy Harbor was the scene of festivity such as seen at few, if any of the real night spots! The Tango, danced by Virginia Barrett and Norman Addie: a male octet, led by Martin Boughan, the singing waiter , the Three Grace Notes, a girls' trio, Elaine Gasper, Luana Weil, and Lucille Graf, a torch singer, Iosephine Minicinop and even a regular chorus line with six beautiful chorines livening up the proceedings, all added up to enjoyment plus for the lucky people who were privileg2d,f6' X9 see this remarkable performance. Maxx Nu Q' X9-CZ!-Xelo YL Xb X ' O A txwg, Nvgl Xin 'BML W0 vxx- boqibvgcxne gr QU -x AND ALL LINDBLOM COMES TO CELEBPA Following this bit of sophisticated fun came When the Chimes Rang, a pageant-drama based on the old legend of the magic chimes which wouldn't ring unless a worthy gift were placed on the altar. The two children, who on giving away their last pfennig to a beggarwoman, caused the chimes to ring, were aptly played by Myrtle Smidl and Anna Kimak. This section was under the direction of Miss Mary Courtenay, who also had charge of co-ordinating the three acts into one well-knit production. Rounding out each evening's entertainment was a humorous Chinese play, The Stolen Prince, under the direction of Miss Margaret Dixon. This bit of comedy concerned itself with the adventures of the young prince Ioy, played by Bob Drennan, who through a mistake is taken from the palace and set adrift on the river Chang Hi. He is picked up by a poor fisherman, Patrick Raso, and his wife, Lucille Clausen. This family is completed by Lee Mee the duck, who catches fish for them. The Boy Prince grows up, not knowing he is of royal blood 'til the day, many years later, when a famine strikes the country. Lee Mee is sent to search for food and returns with one of the Emperor's sacred fish. Officers of the Court arrive and immediately prepare to decapitate the fisherman and his family. They are saved in the nick of time by the aged nurse, Betty Kosak, who recognizes a string of jade on the neck of the young Prince. He is restored to the Emperor and all ends happily. The humor of this play lay, not in the play itself, but in the fact that it was presented in a typical Chinese manner, with the property man, played by Peter Lukas, on a bare stage, and a chorus, Madeline Hinich, commenting on the play as it progressed. Orchids to all who had a part in LIFE GOES TO A PARTY for a good job well done! Tl-IE CREAM OE TI-IE LINDBLOM CROP SENIOR BOYS' COUNCIL To the Senior Boys' Council is entrusted the huge responsibility of uphold- ing the masculine end of Lindblom's traditional greatness and of enforcing her regulations. These eighteen boys represent the pick of the two senior classes on the basis of general leadership and reliability. Their services are far reaching. Regular and efficient inspections oi the entrances and washrooms, provision for the scholarship eligibility of athletes, notification cf the graduates concerning the semi-annual Alumni dances, assistance in civic projects, such as last Spring's Clean-Up Campaign, and the representation of Lindblom at each meeting of the Chicago Red Cross, are several of their duties. The annual Pep Book, of which this Fall's was the largest thus far, is always one of their outstanding achievements. The boys' social activities this year included a party with the Senior Girls' Council and an enjoyable trip to Turkey Run Park at the suggestion of their cheerful and untiring sponsor, Mr. Moore. SENIOR GIRLS' COUNCIL A white dress with a glowing crimson jacket is symbolic of the Senior Girl Councilor, one of the highest positions that a girl in Lindblom may at- tain. The greatest aim of almost every ambitious girl is to become a part of this outstanding group. The councilor contributes a number of valuable services to the school community. The All-Girls' Thanksgiving Assembly, the Christmas Carol Service, and the Candy Sale for the upkeep of the Girls' Social and Rest Rooms were organized and sponsored by this distinguished body. Once each semester the council members enjoy an Induction Tea and also a Twilight Supper Party at which they are guests of their sponsor, Miss Courtenay. During the past semester thwe position of secretary was fulfilled by Doris Kroupa, while june Matha served as representative on the Executive Cabinet of the Alumnae Council, of which every councilor auto- matically becomes a member after graduation. t 1 1 I SENIOR BOYS' COUNCIL Upper Row-Keblusek, Ceithaml, Ieselc, Olson, Bernqard, Oliver, Hall, Wulff, Dudowski, Phillips First Row-Benson, Carlson, Cooperrider Conqrave, Cross, Anderson, Singer, Straling. In this Way it is composed ot a great variety ot students and represents the entire student body. Each semester it sponsors an educational tour to some point of interest. This fall a divided tour was planned to the Rosenwald Museum and to the steel mills. p It holds its meetings each Wednesday in the Boys' Club Room under the direction of Mr. Crotts. To uphold and maintain the standards of Lind- blom is its chief aim. lt accomplishes this by holding investigations on any matters needing adjustment. In order that it might devote all its efforts toward helping Lindblom it has held no social events as yet. Although it is very young in comparison with other clubs, its importance and necessity have already been recog- nized and it is a great honor to be chosen a member of it. This semester's assembly season was opened by Mary McCormick ot the Chicago City Opera Company. Next came the Sophomore Induction As- sembly, followed by a stirring pep assembly to arouse a greater team spirit tor our gridiron heroes. The radio class realistically re-created im- portant modern world events. Music was presented by two talented young artists, Lindblom's own Matthew Faruggio, vocalist, and Frieda Trepel, pianist. Time Marches On was the theme developed and presented by the radio class for American Education Week. Tommy Tucker, ot Walt Disney's crew, amazed Lindblom with the versatility ot his voice. Mr. Irving, master of legerdemain, returned to Lindblom to astound us with his black magic. The all-girls Thanksgiving Assembly, a pageant of girls' activities, and the A Cappella choir's Christmas program ot sacred music, concluded the semes- ter's list ot outstanding assemblies. The beginning of the game saw Harrison kicking to Lind- blom. During the first quarter neither team had the advantage, but in the second period, Harrison started clicking and scored a touchdown on a forty-yard pass from Klernchuck to Zilenski. Harrison then faked a place kick and passed the ball into the end zone for the extra point. Shortly afterward Harrison paved the way for a second score with a fifty-yard pass. Two plays later a backward lateral was thrown to Klern- chuck, who in turn heaved the pigskin into the end for the tally. The kick for the extra point was complete. The last period found the Lindblorn gridders vainly striving to over- come the fourteen point advantage of Harrison, but they were interrupted by the final whistle of the garne. Off-tackle smashes, end runs, center plunges, and a 30-yard pass from Hoblick to Ceithaml put the ball on Englewocd's one-yard line, from where Hoblick, on an off-tackle smash, took it over the goal line for the tally. The second touchdown was the re- sult of an Englewood fumble, recovered by Haas. Ceitharnl then sprinted 15 yards around end to score. The second and third quarters were uneventful, but during the fourth quar- ter, Lindblom scored two additional touchdowns, the first by Haas. Reagan then threw a pass to Haas. and he arnbled over the line for the extra point. Reagan scored the last tally for Lindblorn on a center plunge, with Larry Haas successfully kicking the extra point. LINDBLOM, 13, TILDEN, 0 l.indblom's gridrnen avenged last season's loss by defeating Tilden 13 to 0. Lindblom first scored on a steady march from the 50-yard marker. Two passes from West to Ceitharnl, and a center plunge by Soiya scored the touchdown. Late in the third quarter Soiya fumbled and Tilden recovered. The Tech- men picked up four yards in three downs, then Greybar intercepted a pass and ran to the twelve-yard line. Soiya punted, but the ball only went to the 20-yard line. Tilden failed to penetrate the Eagles line, and Soiya again attempted to kick out of danger, but the ball bounded back. Still Tilden could not pierce our defense, and after an incompleted pass, West punted deep into Tilden's territory. On Tilden's first down, Reagan intercepted a Tech pass and ran 40 yards. A pass from West to Ceithaml was completed, and Lindblom's second tally was scored. Reagan's kick was good. LINDBLGM, 13, KELLY, 6 ln the last game of the season, Lindblom defeated Kelly 13 to 6. The Eagles gained yardage in the first quarter with plunges by West and Reagan, and passes to Ceithaml, which paved the way for the first scorel West scored with a run around right end, and Reagan kicked the extra point. Kelly scored in the third period on a freak play, namely a blocked pass intercepted by Kranklis, who proceeded to run seventy-five yards for the On the first play in the last quarter, shifty Waldo West evaded the entire Kelly team and twisted his way fifty yard for a touchdown. A pass was attempted for the extra point, but it was irlomplete. , Shortly after the touchdown, a pass from West to Ceithaml was completed, and the latter crossed Kelly's goal, but the score was void because of clipping. The final whistle blew with Lindblom on Kelly's two-yard line. J 19 N, 5 ? The first was a triangular meet between Lindblom, Englewood, and Bowen: the second a dual meet between Lind- blom and Englewood: and the third a quadruple meet between Lindblorn, Bowen, Englewood, and DuSable. The fourth and last meet before the city meet was lost to Froebel High School of Gary, the Indiana State Cross-Country Champions. Although the Maroons were defeated, Clutterham was the individual star, defeating Gregory, the Indiana State Champion, in a fast 10:10. ' In the fifth annual city cross-country run at Washington Park, Lindblom's cross-country team placed fourth with the Maroons placing runners in the following positions: Clutterham, third, Phillips, sixth, Maza, twenty-second: Veer, twenty-eighth, and Honath, thirty-fifth. Major athletic letters were awarded to Clutterham and Phillips. c 9, '. 1, ! The club was started in l928 and since then it has matured under the guiding hand of Mr. Hollister, its originator and sponsor, and Mr. Moore, our football coach. This semester's officers were as follows: Earl Phillips, Presidentp Bob Malone, Vice-presidentp Dave Clutterham, Secretary, and Frank Lauraitis, Treasurer. Besides rendering numerous services to the school, and the pleasure given to the lettermen, the club sponsors a dance each fall, not only for its own members but for outsiders as well. This year it was held on November twenty-fifth. Membership is limited exclusively to those who have earned athletic L's, providing they are willing to undergo a little discomfort during the initiation A day horrors. CABINET To promote the many activities, to provide entertainment and leadership for the twenty-five hundred members of the Girls' Athletic Association and to assist in the running of the girls' gymnasium are only a few duties of the Girls' Athletic Association Cabinet. These neatly navy blue and white uniformed girls are very carefully chosen, for they must excel, not only in sports, but also in scholarship and in leadership ability. This executive organization consists of twenty-three girls who are effectively guided by four officers and the sponsor, Miss Klein. Each board member with the assistance of a subordinate cabinet member has an individual branch for which she is directly responsible, such as fencing, team games, gym-at-large, hiking, bowling, golf, tennis, hockey, leaders, MDX, dancing and swimming. ln addition to the semi-annual party, this semester, efforts were combined which resulted in a very successful charity dance. L CLUB AND 500 CLUB The great aim to bring athletic minded girls into a friendly social relation- ship is recognized in the organization of the L and 500 clubs. The clubs meet on alternate weeks in the Social Boom. Any girl having five hundred or more points toward the traditional L is eligible for membership in the 500 Club. However, the requirements for membership in the L Club is the possession of an L or an L chevron. At Thanksgiving, an enormous basket was filled to its capacity. Every- one looked forward to the Farewell and Welcome Tea for both old and new mernbers, which took place after the Achievement Assembly. This year the clubs, in conjunction, held Playday, inviting all the southside clubs from other schools. They played ping pong, volley ball, shuffle board, badminton, and countless other games. Often enjoyable parties celebrating various holidays were held, but the greatest social event,o:Lt.h.e year was the annual banquet. , QYWWJ G. A. A. If you can save the person, you will probably be thankful for joining the Life Saving class at Lindblom, for you have learned to cope with such a situation. The aim of the Dolphin class is to better itself still further by reviewing life saving, learning fancy diving, and developing more speed. The Dolphin class meets Tuesday during the eighth period, while the Life Saving class meets Tuesday during the ninth and tenth periods. Very often several pupils in each of the classes assist in directing swim- ming lessons throughout the day. The highest awards, the Life Saving and the Dolphin emblems, are eagerly sought by the members, and they work very hard to achieve them. LEADERS The girls' physical educaticn teachers of Lindblom are greatly aided by the splendid assistance of those well-trained, neat-looking girls who wear an immaculate tan jacket over their green gym suits. Every Monday and Thursday morning, during the first period, about forty advanced leaders are specially trained for demonstration purposes, are taught how to assist, and are given pointers on leadership ability. Wednesday morn- ings the beginning leaders are instructed. These girls are especially recom- mended because of their good work and scholarship while at the branches. Each leader contributes at least three hours of service a Week, for which at the end of the semester, service points and perhaps even a service bar are awarded, depending upon the quality of the service. A green chevron, which is sewed on the tan jacket, is given for each semester of service. These capable girls are carefully guided and checked by their sponsor, Miss Callen. I 1 4' 'l 3, U ,Q . S 'W'N EXERCISE--I-IEALTI-IFUL AND FUN TCO' RHYTHMS Popularity is often due to dancing, and Lindblom has it in abundance. Better appearance, poise, posture, and carriage are all beneficial points de- rived from one of the most enjoyable classes of which we can boast. The fundamentals of finer dancing are taught, and many times the girls are called upon to entertain at our assemblies. There is nothing as delight- ful to watch as the rhythmical movements of the human body. There are several rhythms classes, some of them meet twice a week, others only once. Thus the girls are given sufficient knowledge of rhythms. The great social event of the season is the party which is held at the end of the season. Last year a hilarious time was had at the Big Apple party. A trend toward ultra-modern dances is sometimes displayed but the knowl- edge of the finer points in dancing are taken up ezgensively. TEAM GAMES At the beginning of the fall semester many enthusiastic girls join the team games classes. Because of the limitation of time and space, only the first three hundred or so girlsfwho enlist are given the opportunity to spend jolly hours playing captain basketball and basketball. ln a much too short period each week, girls can play in the spirit of good sportsmanship. It is here that one learns the techniques and the finer points of two of women's most exhilerating sports. There are usually about four or five classes in which there are either four or eight teams with a captain and a manager at the head of each. The teams compete, in round robin fashion, to determine the winning team. The victorious teams of each class then play in the semi-finals and finals until the championship team proves the victor. These girls are awarded silver bars.
