Editor-in-Chief: jill Schmiemeier Business Manager: Linda Weber Advisers: Miss Bray, Mrs. Scully It has been said that spirit is an important force in all our lives today, and this certainly is true for students of Lindbergh High School. It is then important for us as students to have a full understanding of what spirit is, what spirit does, and what spirit can do. The en- tire SPIRIT staff's objective thus is to explain meaningfully spirit as it is reflected in LI-IS students. 196 IPIRIT LINDBERGH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL St. Louis, Missouri Volume XVII TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION 2 IN RETROSPECT 4 ACADEMICS 16 ORGANIZATIONS 38 SPORTS 74 ACTIVITIES 112 CLASSES 130 SENIOR DIRECTORY 224 pQgqvI'.4 --r-.-f- ' '.'A '4 L -he - xx 'z ll.. qi' 1' ' .Qfe'fSq?F wxeq-ug. .1s,x, 4 ,E -. . v H 'Y .fi ,-1. N-1' Because of the enthusiasm and service shown by the famed Sarge of English Ill, Mr. William Elkins, to the students and their welfare, the 1967-68 SPIRIT Staff dedicates this book. As a faculty member for ten years he has served as junior and Senior sponsor, head of the photog- raphy club, member of the Athletic Council, and Adviser to the Hangar Committee. Mr. Elkins attended Mizzou for two years then joined the Marines. Later, he earned a B.S. from Washington U. and an M.A. from Austin Peay College in Tennessee. As a tease, the ever- loyal Lindbergh booster, and go- get um coach for the faculty volley- ball team, Mr. Elkins cannot be topped All these things make Mr. William Elkins a most deserving dedi- catee. So, it is in retrospect, a looking back on things, the spirit past, that is the pm-- pose of this yearbook. Go back with us now and relive those experiences which had an effect on the lives of everyone of us in some manner, whether we actively took part in them or not. Both the sophomore and junior classes study six books a year. In all sophomore classes, students are assigned an autobiography. For the first time in the junior Eng- lish classes the Bible was studied as a literary work. Other juniors participated in the team-teach- 55. ,ab ing program which consists of lectures, discussions, and inde- pendent studies on phases of American Literature. In senior classes compositions and term ' papers are required to help the student prepare for later years in college. X l V7 QA-if 'L' 4 MRS. VETA TAKACI-I, English IV, Senior Sponsorg MRS. BU I ESS ml-5.2m 'Q gy 2 This year LHS began a new computer course for all science and math teachers. The program is another step toward broadening the scope of educational efforts, or in the View of Supt. Noah Gray, an experiment in the application of technology in teaching. Two computer systems are being used in this experiment, one at Middle School and one here at the Senior High. There are seventeen par- ticipating teachers of math and science who received special txain- ing in the use of the computer terminals. At the end of this school year each teacher was asked to evaluate the system. Perhaps we will find that computers can be used in the teaching of reading, arithmetic, languages, and fine arts as well as science and higher mathematics. Only time and ex- perience will tell, asserts Supt. Gray. l F, if at-A ef-A L g STANDING: MR. JOHN CREWS, Algebra II, Plane Geometry, Senior Spon- sor, MR. Creativity is an important el- ement in the fine arts classes which help students excel in areas that interest them the most. Under the guidance of their teacher, many talents are developed and new tal- ents created. The opportunity of advancement to higher levels is present in several classes. D0 E TIC ART This year the home economics department added half-year courses in Food and Clothing. The Clothing classes were encouraged in their sewing by having their work displayed in the showcases. Themes for the cases were developed by the girls themselves. Throughout the year classes were visited by representatives from various food companies. These experiences enabled the girls to gain a better understanding of homemaking. Of the many unique actions at Lindbergh, this year's swimming Flyers were the first to tie a meet since the be- ginning of LI-IS swimming. The overall record was thus finished at 12--2--1 against such opponents as St. Louis U. High and Kirkwood. Although this year's team consisted predominately of under-classmen,lthey finished fourth in their conference, third in district and ninth in the State Tournament. Matt Pross set two new school records in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle, breaking those set in 1966. Chuck Reller set a new 400 yard freestyle time of 4:15.9, and Paul Berri topped the season by breaking a school and a district record for the 100 yard breathstroke. At the diving end for Lingbergh, Doug Feco finished second and Roy Beal finished sixth. Doug Feco flies through the air with the greatest of ease. SPIRIT is the people of LHS To LHS Students, Probably most of us won't remember all the high- lights of '68, but we, The SPIRIT Staff, have tried to capture those that will be most memorable in the years to come. Throughout the book, in the reflection of all these activities, has been portrayed the force we feel is embodied in LHS, that force is spirit --the spirit of participation, effort and enjoyment. My thanks go first to the staff members who worked so hard and faithfully after school and in the wee hours to complete this book. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did. Next, I want to express my gratitude to our sponsors, Miss Bray and Mrs. Scully, without whom we would never have produced a '68 SPIRIT. The staff and I also sincerely appreciate assistance from the following people: Mr. Leroy Amen, Mr. Harry Swain from American Yearbook Company, Miss Sophie Parashak and the photographers from Vincent Price Stu- dio, Mr. Tom Sides, Mr. Robert Laacke, THE POST DIS- PATCH, THE GLOBE DEMOCRAT, PROM Magazine, The PILOT, Mr. john Glassen from Becktold Bindery, the office secretaries, and the English Department. jill Schmie meier Editor-in-Chief Spirit is . . . having a Hspiritn your very own. .
