WITNESSES: Recru.1zss RED SMr'rH BnoruEn DAVE Gartmsn PA-r Bucicuav, Attempt-at-Law Page One Hundred One class prophecy The pleasure of your company is requested at the reunion of the graduating class of 1961, on June 3, 1976 at three o'clock at the Douglas Mu- nicipal Airport, Charlotte, N. C., read the in- vitation to the first reunion of my graduating class. There must be a mistake, I reasoned. VVhy should our class have a reunion at an airport?', Cn June 3, however, 1 was eager to attend our reunion, not only to see my old classmates but also to discover why we should meet at an airport. As 1 entered the airport gate and heard the excited voices of my classmates, 1 realized that they, too, were puzzled over our strange meeting place. Before 1 could ask any questions, though, Sally Baker, professor of English at the University of North Carolina, hurried to my side. Our whole class is here, she exclaimed, even U. S. Presi- dent Kermit Goodson and Vice-President Ronnie Turner! VVonderfull But who are those distinguished- looking people standing by that airplane? 1 queried. As l drew nearer 1 recognized Scotty Smith, Rita Dalton, Marcella Murphy, Joyce All- ran, Linda Norman, Ann McAlister, and Johnny Kiser-all outstanding school teachers busily dis- cussing the dreadful conduct of their students. Marching briskly around the hangars were Marines Gerald Carpenter and Ricky Bumgarner with sailors Danny Spencer and Samuel Parris. Following close behind were Air Force Captains Kenneth Hovis, Ray Lingerfelt, and Richard Varner. They do present a splendid sight, ex- pressed well-known poet, Brenda Kinley. I must write a poem about men in uniform. Professional football players Robert Hawkins, Roby Jetton, Nelson Beam, and Harold Billings were selling tickets to their next important game to millionaires Johnny James, Don Lineberger, Keith Hoyle, Peter VVoodward and millionairess Barbara Saine. I overheard several secretaries, Patsy Cornwell, Carolyn Crowder, Charlotte Roach, Joann Mor- rison, Enid Costner, Joyce Chambers, and Jean- ette Goins with stenographers Pat Ogle, Doris Craig, and Linda Mullinax, debating Susan Cornwell's latest book, HOW TO CATCH A MAN - IN FOUR EASY LESSONS. They agreed to ask critics Johnnie Schrum and Carole Moore to give their opinions of the book. 1 noticed press photographers Jo Linda Hill and Robert Bynum taking pictures for the CJ IARLOTTE OBSERVER of drag racer John Chapman in the worlds fastest dragster, built bv Ted Eurey. This dragster was outlawed on all trackseit was just too fast for the other cars. Page One Hundred Two Sitting near a telephone to receive any emer- gency calls from their baby sitters were house- wives Deane Mosteller, Judy Brafford, Mary Hubbard, Brenda Dellinger, Barbara Simpkins, Frances Sigmon, Nancy Phillips, Becky Heavner, Judy Carpenter and Sandra Whitesides. Their endless flow of gossip amazed me. Near the airplane tower stood social workers Anne Hoover, Linda Shuford, and Nancy Rhodes who eagerly told me about their signifi- cant work in a clinic near Raleigh headed by psy- chiatrist Billie Gladden. Suddenly there was an uproar in the middle of the field. Lawyers Bucky Caldwell, Michael Heavner, and Mac Self were having such a heated argument over a checker game that State Patrolman Frank Carpenter had to separate them. lt seems natural that lawyers would argue in court-but over a checker game at a reunion? Oh, well. After this excitement ended, band director Douglas Craig asked me to help him organize a band from our class members since he had been unable to bring his band to the reunion. After a few minutes of concentration, 1 decided that businessmen Philip Buchanan, Fred Alexander, Rodney Norris. Johnny Burgin, Don James, Jim Hovis, Edward Little, and accountants Beth Barineau and Georgia Goodman would surely serve as valuable band members since they seemed to have succeeded in everything else. As usual, 1 was wrong! The dreadful music they played almost drove everyone home. Hair stylist Glenda Coffey caused them to stay by circulating cards announcing the grand open- ing of her beauty salon. Her staff of expert beau- ticians including Joyce Deaton, Linda Ballard, Paula Bass, Myna 1-louser, Joyce Hager, Linda Smith, Judy Lewis, Sandra Caldwell, Diane Avery, and Jane Noles, Glenda assured us, would give each of their classmates a free hair set. I was pleased to learn from Jerry Leedy, traveling salesman, that Shirley Beal is now an F.B.I. detective, that Tracey Boyles is a service station grease monkey, and that Randy Ramsey is a successful house wrecker for the Ronald Fish Construction Company. As 1 began crossing the landing field, Joyce Saine, airport secretary, announced from the ra- dio tower, Today, before the business session of our reunion begins, we will be entertained with music from the famous Songbird Trio, Jeannie Keener, Sue Roberts, and Darrell Beal. Their beautiful singing almost kept me from noticing 1 was standing beside secretaries Brenda Haskett, Virginia Boyles, Myrlene Kirkpatrick, Tamera Stamey, Linda Pitts, Mary Caldwell, Glenda Bumgarner, Nancy Reynolds, Betty Noles, Vic- kie Link, Brenda Laney, Jean Stanley, and ludy Smith who were all taking in shorthand the lovely words of the trio's songs so they could share them with their bosses. What devoted secretariesf' commented minis- ters lohn Lockman and James Wise. They aren't the only persons wrapped up in their work, answered farmer Barry Friday. 'Since they've arrived, have you noticed electri- cal engineers Buddy Setzer, Ralph Smith, Robert Ray, james Reavis, and Steve Burris? They have planned a completely new electrical system for the airport. They intend to give their plans to airport director Burley Beal. Will everyone please be quiet! blated a voice from the tower in a tone we recognized as John Smiths. I should like to explain the pur- pose of our meeting here. Do you see that gi- gantic rocket ship to the left of the airfield?!' Everyone nodded. John continued, Our class is going to make history today by taking that rocket ship to the moon where we will hold our class meeting. We gasped with horror. lohn ex- plained, This space ship was designed by rocket engineers Ierry Coodson, Iames Peeler. William Painter, Ilarold Norman, and Cary Richard, and was built for us by engineers Mike Kiser, Tommy Thompson, james Keever, and Barry Lockman with the help of space engineer Wolfgang Hill- mann who flew from Germany to help complete the ship. The launching platform, upon which the rocket ship rests, was designed by architect Bobby Beal. Constructed by the combined skill of all these experts, the space ship, I can assure you, is the world's best. Horror still showed on all our faces. Take-off time, announced John, will be in one hour. Begin preparing. But I've never flown before, stammered milkman Jerry Hamrick. How do I know it's safe?,' Flying is as safe as staying at home, assured airline stewardesses Libbie Richard, Thelma Bynum, and Carolyn Keener. Besides, this rocket ship has special fuel developed by chem- ists Roger Rice, Danny Caldwell, and Peggy Poarch. Nothing can go wrong. Medical technologists Sandra Griggs, Linda Coforth, and Margaret Ann Willis declared they weren't afraid of flying, but they were certainly glad to see mechanics Michael Abernathy, Wayne Smith, Ralph Carpenter, and R. B. Miller giving the space ship a last, thorough check. Is there a doctor nearby? inquired Mary Love Boyd, Dean of Agnes Scott College. I want to be sure of good medical care on our tripf' Doctors ,lohn Froneberger, james Drury, La- mar Norwood, and surgeons james McConnell, Chan Chandler, and Pat Buckley rushed to see if they were needed the minute medicine was mentioned. Time to board the space shipf' bellowed the loud speaker. Most of the class members shrank back in fear from the monstrous rocket ship. I dread making man's first flight to the moon, voiced textile engineer jerry Barkley, but I don't want to miss the business meeting of our class. 'WVC all want to attend the meeting, so letis go to the moon and make history! challenged Jerry Reinhardt, wealthy factory owner. lust think how famous the class of ,6l will be! First people to reach the moon! Forward to the moon! shouted our class, for- getting all fears. Nurses Alice Crow, Polly Little, Diane Criggs, Mary Mauney, Bobbie Saine, Alice Reynolds, leanne Keziah, Patricia McGinnis, and Linda Schronce were the first to board the space ship, saying they were ready to try anything once. Dont you think it's lovely? asked interior decorator Linda Rhyne. '!Linda and I decorated it in fire-engine red trimmed with burnt orange and lavender, VVe thought you'd love those colors,', smiled Dottie fluss, Linda's assistant. lim certain welll grow to appreciate them more as time passes, assured Cammy Crowell, religious director of a small mid-western church. We painted the outside of the space ship, bragged artists Lynda Cilbert, Ray Burris, and Rebecca Whitener. Usually we paint on canvas, but painting a space ship seemed such a chal- lenge to us, we couldn't resist. To complete all arrangements for the flight, pharmacists jerry Stamey and lack Shuford of- fered their services to manage a drugstore on the space ship. Close the door! boomed space pilot Cary Homesley. But wait-theres one more. Yes, one reluctant soul, Sue Iudd. Please, Mr. Custer, I don't want to go! she moaned as we dragged her into the ship. She had been burying her latest million dollars for safe keeping in case she ever returned to earth. Fasten all seat belts! Prepare for count-down! came the instructions. IO-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-3-3-3 What was wrong? Our trip was cancelled! Dwight Saunders, our official count-down man, had forgotten how to count.
