CALIFORNIA L I N G 0 I. N The following is the prize-winning essay written by Patricia Brooks which mon the coveted First Prize in the local and District American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest in 19552 Dear People of the United States: I am your flag. I am red, white and blue. My red stands for the blood that was shed to keep my country free. My white stands for the purity and honesty of you, my people, while the blue on me stands for the ocean crossed to main? tain this wonderful land you call .. the United States of America. I stand for love, purity, and freedom. I started out with 13 stars on me. Thirteen is supposed to be an unlucky number. But not for me, no sir. I changed and instead of 13, I now have 48 stars on me to represent your states. Betsy Ross designed me, or so they say ,.,. and I was first made of a white petticoat, an old faded blue shirt, and a piece of red underwear. I wasn't the best, but I was proud of representing a new and young nation. You weren't much either, but you and I grew, didn't we? You grew into a strong nation. A democratic nation with happy and care- free people. I grew into a big, happy and better flag. I stand for your country...and all your rights and Freedoms. I will keep on standing and flying over your democracy,.. watching you grow even more. I, your Star Spangled Banner, will watch you protect me and all I stand for,I will watch little children and organizations salute me because I stand for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I will fly over your capitol, over schools, in classrooms, and over playgrounds. George Washington and Betsy Ross had an idea I would grow, but maybe if they could see me now, they would be surprised at how much I represent. With every star on me and every stripe on me, I will try to stand up- right and make you as proud of me as I am proud of you. Sincerely yours, Your Star-Spangled Banner WFWQKQK ,A -Q . f -,Lk f fgsaj,-,yr -1.5 ,- .x - - .4,,,. I SUPERINTENDENT t onG.Ros Sp tzdtfSch1 X ' K J Tb the Students of Lincoln: .
