That is the vital thing. This theme is developed on the following pages by six imaginary characters symbolic of all High School youth. Together they malce you see the many sides of their existence and show inevitably their big, mysterious thrill, the Challenge ol Living. The years 1936-1937 have made a number of changes at Lincoln. Lincoln has been equipped with new, modern port- ables because of increased enrollment. For the same reason, two hundred and Hfty underclassmen were transferred to Queen Anne. Among improvements in the educational system are a new advisory system for boys and girls of each class and a reading class for special students. Four Lynx won honors in the National Scholastic Contest. Lela Isaacson won first prize for her book review, Jim Knapton first prize for his literary article, Caralyn Hogelund, honorable mention for her literary article, and Ethel Porter honorable mention in design. Mary Esterbrook won first place and a gold medal in the S. A. R. Oratorical Contest while Shirley Peek placed second in the Toastmaster's extemp contest. The students of Lincoln lost one of their favorite teachers by the death of Miss Amanda Westhold, former adviser of the class of '38, whose kindness and understanding were an inspiration to all who knew her. Through all this change, Lincoln High School is still school to some two thousand six hundred people. LINCOLN IS MEETING THE CHALLENGE. 1- 1. ., I I ' -5' 4 ,g . PIBSHIII 'IUTEBS Coach Bill Nollan's fighting Lincoln football team finished its 1936 schedule with three victories and three defeats. Typically a colorful Nollan-directed eleven, the Lincolns were one of the strongest and most feared aggregations in the city. The prep title was won by the Garfield Bulldogs, the Lynx' traditional foes, while the Queen Anne Grizzlies and the Broadway Bengals were close behind. Captain and signal-caller Bill Marx, and powerful lineman Byng Nixon were unanimously chosen All-City selections. The Lincolns started their season auspiciously with three well-earned victories over West Seattle, Ballard, and Franklin, by one touchdown each. Then they received their first setback, being defeated at the hands of Queen Anne, 9-0. In the fifth game, Garfield won from the Abes, 6-0. But the score fails to tell the tale, for an unbelievable jinx reigned supreme again. With two minutes left and the Lynx deep in Bulldog terri- tory, a fumble prevented a possible victory. The Broadway Tigers thumped the locals, 7-0, in the final fray of the regular schedule, which was played on a muddy field. Nine Lincolns concluded their prep grid careers in a Thanksgiving Charity round-robin affair, when West Seattle was engaged for two periods. Duane Beeler, Don Crowton, Roy Berg, Martin Berg, Bill Marx, Byng, Nixon, Lawrence Peterson, and Don Shallow have played their last game for Lincoln. 0 West Seattle gains on Turkey day.
