One of the most progressive ideas is that oi advanced learning. With the space age at hand and the prospects of conquering dread diseases, higher and more profound learning has become not only a symbol of our age, but a vital ne- cessity. In keeping with this trend, we, the editors of the 1960 Lionian, will attempt to show, through pictures and words, how Lincoln is working toward this goal. This year we are trying to present more than the traditional high school, we are trying to show the new Lincoln High--the schoolwith the goal-- the schoolwith its sights set toward higher academic achievement- -the school which recognizes its obligation to better prepare its students for the world of today and tomorrow. 3 in fi , 'fa' ,4 ,, ...- I n ' - 31.5. ,I x ' .K -x ' 'ft ' ' I , X A' , . fa rf.. qmfff. if '- Q a fi'liHHl' ' 'xx 's ' 132' 23.3. Spirits are high and stu- dents buckle down for the last stretch of school. It is during the Spring that members are elected to National Honor, Alexis and Linion League. The big social event of the Spring, the Junior-Senior Prom, is one of the most important activities of the year. The Prom, for juniors, is a new ex- perience, and the seniors realize that their high school days are drawing to a close. Alook into the choir room will find the choir members working hard for the annual Fiesta . During the last days the halls seem empty without the Seniors who have left classes for the last time. Class night, Baccalaureate, and, finally, Commencem ent climax the Seniors' high school career. in w if - le A 4.9'fZ2'z5i'f52i f-f JIPW if ff i 1: N A 2 1igg,,ggP. Z l g 4 ' F 'xx x N N I ll -it n KX Skip Cronin holds on for a gain against McKinley. In their last game against the Massillon Tigers, the Lions were never in the game as the powerful state champions ran roughshod over the Lions. The Tigers completely dominated the game as they consistently threw Lion ball- carriers for huge losses. The Lions could gain only 89 net yards rushing and 74 yards passing as quarterback Phil Billings hit on five out of ten passes. Joe Sirgo, the Lion's hard-running halfback, was injured in the game and never did regain his fine pre-season form as injuries hobbled him throughout the season. Against the Cuyahoga Falls Black Tigers, the Lions played their best defensive game of the season as they battled the Tigers on even terms for most of the game. The first half ended in a scoreless deadlock, but when the second half started, the larger Cuyahoga gridders began to wear down the predominately smaller Lions. Cuyahoga's only touchdown came on a pass which was just out of reach of a Lincoln player. The Lions c 0 u l d not put together anything resem- bling a sustained drive as their deepest pen- etration was to the Cuyahoga 49. '60 IN DET IL The 1959 edition of the Lincoln Lions, under new head coach Art Pardee, opened their sea- son with a fine showing in the annual Canton Preview, although the Lions tied Lehman 0-0 and lost to Timken 6-0. The Lions were typical of past Lincoln teams as they combined crisp tackling with plenty of team spirit to put on a fine show for the 2,500 fans present. The Lions opened their 1959 grid campaign against a veteran and strong Akron Garfield eleven. The Lions did a good job of holding Garfield for the first half, but in the second half Garfield scored twice to give them a 26-6 vic- tory. The Lions' only touchdown was scored when quarterback Phil Billings went ten yards on an option play. Cronin and Billings bring clown the ballcarrier. Tom Wilson gets set for the tackle. The Lions dropped their fourth straight game to the Barberton Magics largely because of their inability to hold on to the pigskin. The Lions fumbled ten times and lost possession of the ball on five occasions. They pushed their way inside the Magic 20 yard line five times and inside the ten twice. However, each time, a fumble stopped the threat. Against an inconsistent McKinley Bulldog attack, the fighting Lions gave it all they had and nearly came away with an upset victory. Although the Lions went to their fifth straight defeat, the game was not decided until the final moments, when McKinley scored their final touchdown. The Lion's two touchdowns were scored by halfback Skip Cronin on a 31 yard pass from quarterback Phil Billings and on a 38 yard pass from fullback John Andreadis to halfback Doug Wilson. Andreadis and Cronin were outstanding in defeat. The Lions traveled to New Philadelphia for their sixth game and the Quakers proved them- selves poor hosts as they defeated the Lions 16-12. The Quakers' pair of two-point PAT's were the margin of defeat for the Lions. Lin- coln scored first when Phil Billings hit Skip Cronin witha 25 yard pass. In the third quarter, with the Quakers leading 8-6, Billings took a punt on his own 5, and scampered 95 yards for the Lions' second touchdown. It was against the Quakers that Charles Brandstetter veteran center inyured his knee again and was forced to sit out the rest of the season I Ona muddy field and in terrible playing con- ditions, the Central Catholic Crusaders turned back the Lions as they tried for their first win in seven starts. The Lions had promising touchdown drives stopped many times as again fumbles and costly mental mistakes lost them the ball game. Suffering their eighth straight defeat, the Lions were defeated by a strong Cambridge eleven. This defeat tied the school record for the most defeats in one season. The Lions could never get their offense started as Cam- bridge played a strong defensive game. At the half Cambridge had scored only one touch- downand it looked as if the Lions might spring an upset. In the second half, however, Cam- bridge scored three times to put the game out of Lincoln's reach. In their last game of the season, the Lions ran up against a good Timken Trojan eleven and for a while it looked as if an upset was in the making. At the half the Lions led 6-0 as halfback Doug Wilson, who played a fine game both offensively and defensively, slammed the final yard of a 67 yard drive. It was a different story in the second half as the Trojans scored four times to wrap up the game. In their finest game of the season, Lincoln produced the biggest upset of the season by de- feating the Central Catholic Crusaders, 53-49. The tremendous rebounding of Dave Kosht, who had recently been brought up from the reserve team, and the fine shooting of one of the best guards in Lincoln history in the person of John Dickerson, had the overflowing crowdinawild state of frenzy. The victory was, however, a combined effort of the team which fought hard for the victory. In their first intra-city game the McKinley Bulldogs defeated Lincoln by the score of 45-34 as both teamsplayedadeliberate brand of basketball. The Lions showed their power of recovery by trouncing Barberton, 65-41, and squeezing by a strong North Canton quintet, 40-35. An important factor in the two victories was the agressive all- around play of guard Doug Wilson and the scoring of forward Phil Billings who scored 13 points against Barberton. For three quarters the stubborn Lions stayed within striking distance of the most powerful bas- ketball team in the state, the Timken Trojans. In the fourth quarter, however, the Trojans broke open the game to win 66-46. The 1959-60 Lincoln Lions opened their season with a 57-49 loss at the hands of Cleveland Heights. The Lionswere paced by John Dickerson and John Andreadis with 16 and 11 points respectively. Going against one of the stronger teams in the Tri-County League, the Lions came home with a 57-49 victory over Sebring in a hard fought con- test. The powerful and highly ranked Massillon Tigers then defeated the Lions by a score of 54-43 as the Tiger'sheight advantage was just too much for the Lions to combat. In their next three games the Lions defeated the higher respected quintets of Akron Hoban, 52- 44, Jackson, 52-35, and Akron North, 46-36. The Lions were then defeated by Bridgeport, 58-51 and the powerful Niles Bulldogs, 59-54. Against Niles, the Lions put on a big fourth quarter rally that fell short. CENTRAL GAME IS SEASONS HIGHLIGHT Ascrappy and agressive Lincoln five then de- featedafavoredCanton South team by the score of 49-43. Doug Wilson held South's leading scorer to six points as well as playing a fine floor game. After leading by three points at the end of the first half, the Lions succumbed to the strong Wooster Generals, 66-56. Dickerson and Kosht led the Lions with 23 and 15 points respectively. In compiling their highest offensive score of the season. the Lions outscored a surprisingly strong Perry Panther team. Leading the way again was senior guard John Dickerson with 34 points, sophomore Bill Gribble contributed 15 points. The Lions evened their record at 9-9 as they lost to Lehman, 48-45 and powerful Elyria, 72-50. After being behind by 13 points at the half against Lehman, the Lions put on Z1 strong second half rally which fell three points shy. John Dickerson again led the Lions with 19 points. In their opening game of the tournament Lincoln met the East Canton Hornets and at the end of regulation time the score was 47-47. In the three minute overtime period, John Andreadis hit on a difficult left-handed hook shot and John Dick- erson made a foul shot as the Lions gained a hard fought victory by the score of 50-49. Going against the Timken Trojans for the sec- ond time in the season, the Lions were beaten by the same twenty point margin which had defeated them before. The Lions fought hard all the way but were no match for the everpowerful Trojans who won 72-52. Dickerson with 18 points and Andreadis with 13 points led Lincoln. The Lions ended their season with a 10-10 recordwhich is a fine record considering the fact that the team was predominately underclassmen. At times, Lincoln had three sophomores and one junior in the starting lineup, which means that Lincolnwill be a team to be watched in future years. At the annual Lincoln Basketball Banquet, April 18, at the Sachsenheim Club individual awards were presented to the following: John Dickerson, who was first team All-City and All-County, re- ceivedWHBC's Most Valuable Player trophy, Best Foul Shooter trophy, and the Highest Field Goal Percentage trophy, Doug Wilson, the Most Assists trophyg and John Andreadis, the Most Rebounds trophy. .1 ' ,'5,?'ff' 'fzitffy 2 fi , 111122.
