JOHN NIEDERHAUSER Thou speakest wiser than thou art aware of. -Shakespeare OUR PRINCIPAL WILLIAM WOLFARTH A great asset to the faculty and students of Lincoln High School is our principal, Mr. William Wolfarth. A native Cantonian, he came to Lincoln first as a student, then as a teacher, and now as principal. He graduated from Otterbein College in 1936 with an A.B. Degree and from Duke University in 1942 with an M.A. Degree. While at Otterbein he was an active participant in all sports, was president of the student council, Pi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and the men's glee club. He was also editor of the newspaper and yearbook. In 1936 he came to Lincoln for his first iob as a teacher. He taught English and Commerce and lndustry. Besides his teaching duties, he was assistant coach, dean of boys, and in charge of publications. In 1943 he was called to serve his country. After his discharge in 1946 he came home to Canton and took a position as principal of West North School and Director of Audio-Visual Education. In 1950 he was appointed the full time Audio-Visual Director. Mr. Wolfarth came back to Lincoln in 1954. He says, Lincoln is my favorite school and it has given me a great deal of satisfaction to complete the cycle from student to principal. Thou wert my guide, philosopher and friend. -Pope Page 7 ROBERT ABEL CHARLES G. ANDREWS MARGARET ATCHISON JOHN R. BAMBERGER A.B. Mt. Union A.B. Bethany A.B. Geneva College B.S. As we near the close of our high school days we have the satisfaction of knowing that we are far better educated than we were as Freshmen. On leaving Lincoln High we are richer also in fond memories and pleasant friendships. We have had experiences these past four years that we will hold dear the rest of our lives. Looking back on our freshmen year we remember those first small achievements that were the basis for greater success in the following years. When we were sophomores Lincoln's football team was city champion and undoubtedly the big moment of our Junior year was the prom. This past year above all will long be remembered, the maroon and gold party conventions follow- ed by the election of our class officers, Dennis McFadden, President, Tom Williamson, Vice President, Dale Grinstead, Treasurer, and Sandra Froelich, Secretary: was an exciting episode. The Senior Party, our last prom, and, of course, our last big event, Commence- ment, are iust a few of the unforgettable moments that the Class of '56 will long remember. Life works out a pattern on the Tapestry of Time. The threads of hope, of love and grief, of fear and faith sublime-of happiness and bitterness, of joy and misery--and stitched into the great design of human destiny. Within so vast a frame, our tiny patch we cannot see. To close we stand to trace the pattern on the tapestry . . . But someday, looking from afar, perhaps we shall behold-Our little bit of the design, our own small thread of gold. Patience Strong Page 16 And when we think we lead we most are led. -Byron M ff PATRICIA AGNES CLAIRE ALEXANDER BRUCE ARBUCKLE GENERAL CLASSICAL GENERAL Library Service I: Chorus II Staff Aides I: Chorus I, II: Linion League IV: Instrumental Choir III, IV: National Honor Music IV: Senior Play: Thes- III, IV: Alexis League IV: Echo pians IV Editorial IV: F.N.A. They are outstanding in the A Cappella Choir, on the football and basketball teams, and in club activities. They did themselves proud with the first party of the year, The Hallo- ween Hop . The grand climax of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom held at the Moonlight Ballroom. The iuniors showed their skill in entertaining the seniors as guests, making the seniors' last party, one they will always remember with pleasure. From the masculine portion of the class, the juniors chose their leaders: Virgil Stroia, President, Don Vogelgesang, Vice President, John Farrall, Secretary, and Dean Biris, Treasurer. Q 4 LEFT TO RIGHT: Linda Chismar, Treva Kines, Tarry Taylor, Joyce Wolcott. Snow Horse made by Bob Horn. The sophomores in their second year at Lincoln High School are finally becoming adjusted to the routine of school life. They now, are more active in sports, clubs, and choir. Participating in school activities and functions have given them a feeling of belong- ing to our school. At the Sea Bottom Bounce , their class party, and main proiect for the year, they became better acquainted and had a wonderful time. Everyone enioyed the fine en- tertainment and, of course, they loved the refreshments. The officers elected by the class of 1958 were Linda Chismar, President, Treva Kines, Vice President, Joyce Wolcott, Secretary, and Tarry Taylor, Treasurer. The mirth and fun grew fast and furious. -Burns -I 9. l' Page 51 ?i ks is 1 , GERRY BAXTER BEVERLY BEHM PERSIE BIRIS LANE JOHN BOBBY DAVE MARY JANE gl is Q . 2 , ,sw 1 un.-f BERGMAN .IOETTA BERKEY BLACKBURN CLAYTON BILLE SANDRA BLATTERT MARA BOBER BLUMENTALS GLEN BLYTHE . , X . imm, I iw-.xv Ly gsfwl z .N it P 6, FEL 11 sl is ...I ROBERT ACKERMAN JACKIE AILING JIM ALLEN MARY LOU ANDERSON NANCY ARDMAN SHIRLEY AUGUSTINE NANCY BABCOCK JOAN BAIRD TED BAIRD AGNES BAKER JERRY BAKER MARY LOU BAKER JULIUS BANAL JIM BARBERA GEORGE BARSON nf DAVID BOWMAN SUE BOWMAN CHARLOTTE sRAosHAw -'YEL' ' fr '11 . FRESHMEN What Lincoln is tomorrow depends on the freshmen of today. During their first year at Lincoln High School, the freshmen made a fine showing. Their April party served as a mixer where they acquired many new friends and became more familiar with the ways of their new school. The freshmen had a year of diversified activities and there were many students who were outstanding in school affairs. The officers of the class, Veronica Sima, President, Fritz Massouh, Vice President, Jeanne Wilson, Secretary, and Fred Keller, Treasurer, have done much to establish their class in Lincoln High School. Hut it leaves somewhere, a record. --Unknown After a vain attempt the Lions lose the ball. Play up, play up, . . The 1955-56 basketball team is one of which we may be very proud. Two records fell by the wayside during regular season play. We won eleven games, breaking the mark of ten set by the 1941-42 and 1953- 54 teams. We compiled 1007 points, drop- ping the 1953-54 teams record of 974 points. This young quintet was favored in only six of its seventeen games, but that meant little to a team with determination. Hard work has made this campaign a successful one. A high spot in the year was a 76-52 romp over the same Youngstown Chaney team that downed the Lions one year ago. This was only one of our surprising upsets. We also handed North Canton one of its two season defeats. ln close games we beat Louisville, Minerva, and Sebring, all members of the Tri-county league. This year we proved we could come from behind to win. This feat has not been accomplished at Lincoln for a long time. Our losses came at the hands of Can- ton's Big Three, Canton South, Timken, and McKinley and three other powerful area teams. The season finished with our winning the Hatchet Trophy from Lehman. The well rounded team had only one senior and the starting array was com- posed of one sophomore and four iuniors. Page 112 A free boil and many hopeful recipients! We won three of In the first game we emerged by the score of 26-0. The going was rougher in our thousand saw, perhaps, what was the a spectacular pass to Larry Ellison for as an outstanding player by the Massillon Jaycess. The game with our hatchet trophy foes from the Hilltop school was a disappoint- ing one. The Lehman boys took advantage of our poor blocking to maintain possession of the hatchet. Although we were the first team to score upon the McKinley Bulldogs, we were never in the game. They went on to an undefeated season and the state championship. We got back on the victory trail by easily trimming Canton South 32-0 at the South Stadium. After losing their first game, Columbus North made us their fourth straight victim one in which we encountered some of the top our nine games. victorious over the Akron North Vikings, winning next three games. A rain-soaked crowd of ten best play of the season when Chuck Dinkins made our lone touchdown. Don Mulheim was honored in a game at Columbus. The Youngstown Chaney team was no match for Leo's Boys as our bench was emptied in our 42-0 romp. We finished our season by losing to the powerful Alliance Aviators and Timken Troians. Our record was not impressive but this young team gained much needed experience. 4. Cara takes the pigskin for a gain as G. Copeland, D. Vagelsang, and T. Ross block for him. . . But of all of them, there's one that's more jealously guarded than all the rest. And yoifre the only one who knows what that secret is! One of your rights as an American is the right to a secret ballot. And you alone know how you mark your ballot. No one sees it, no one can influence you. lt's your secret. In the Red-dominated countries, your vote-if you get one -is about as secret as a brass band playing in a greenhouse. You usually have only one candidate to vote for. A group of sharp-eyed officials checks your ballot to see that you voted the right way. Some people, even in this country, think that that's the way elections should be run. Most Americans don't agree and it's up to every one of us to see that our ballots remain secret. If we let the secret ballot get away from us, we can say goodbye to all our American rights-freedom of speech, free- dom of religion, freedom of press and all the others. How can we preserve these freedoms? By speaking out strongly when we see them endangered. By using our secret ballot every election day to keep America free.
