Lincoln - how much that word brings back-- The red brick building outlined against the sky every morning, the weight of books in your arms as along the hall, lockers bang and friends say Hi , the last-minute rush after the first br-r-r-ring of the bell. The hush in the darkened auditorium as expectant, you wait to see your friends transformed into actors at a play preview, soft ice cream or apple pie eaten at noon in the bustling cafeteria - the groan when rain darkens classroom windows or the sense of excitement in the air at falling snow, the popcorn smell outside the sparkling Lincoln gym when a basketball game is on . . . Friends, dates, acquaintances, teachers, - the inevitable homework, club meetings parties, dances, games - gay days, blue days. . . You'll always turn around when someone says Lincoln - and this year at Lincoln, 1956-'57, has been stopped in flight, as if by a magical hand, and recorded here - in hopes you will remember. . . ff is alfzfgcflzcr Biting andprvpcr. . . We dedicate this book to. . . The Spirit of youth-- Mrs. Mabel Southworth, teacher, friend, and kindly counselor. Young in mind and young in heart- -always deeply sympathetic to young joys and sorrows Mrs. Southworth gave up her job as yearbook advisor at the end of last year, after carrying the responsibility for over 20 years, to lead a more peaceful life of just teaching English to the students of Lincoln High School. She knows full well the job of putting out a yearbook, teaching English, and acting as a second mother to her many students. She has been teaching at Lincoln for almost two score years and has seen as many classes graduate go out into the world, and come back to visit her with the same respect and affection they had for her when she taught them Shakespeare, Kipling, and yearbook publishing. l To dedicate one's life to a certain thing is in itself an education. Her ready smile for anyone, her understanding and goodness reach out and affect those around her. These are the marks of a person who has learned to love life and has found fulfillment in helping others to live a better life. It is with this deep in our minds, and Mrs. Southworth deep in our hearts, that we dedicate this yearbook for 1957 to our own MRS . S George Sidman 5 If is rather for us in bc' here dedicated. . We'll always remember our school games, the plays and dances, but most of all We'll remember our teachers, the people who were always there to teach, to help, to encourage. We'll always remember the smiles, the helpful criticism and the knowledge they gave us for our use and development. Always We'll remember our gratitude belongs to them -- the Lincoln faculty and administration. ?wfW PRINCIPAL OLIN L. WILLS VICE PRINCIPALS MILDRED W. BASSETT GAYNOR PETREQUIN FRANCIS M. Under the able leadership of Bill Farrens and the senior cabinet, the class of 1957 has complet ed an eventful and exciting four years at Lincoln high school. A flavor of excitement, fun and sadness was provided by the three plays that the seniors participated in. Seventh Heaven tugged at our hearts, while the rolicking antics of Time Out For Ginger tickled our fimny bones. The realistic drama Dino showed the life of a delinquent and how he reformed. The class of '57 has a valuable combination of brains, beauty and brawn. The National Honor Society is heavily salted with senior names. Representative of beauty is Alice Eastman, Rose Festival Princess. Athletic teams were dependent upon the senior brawn to climb to their high goals. ,W -,-, jf ,, E 'Vx KN? Entering school last fall, the juniors were met with the task of reorganizing practically everything. This problem was due to the loss of large number of students to the new high school. The juniors, however, with the help of their counselors Miss Minnie Ambler and Mr. William Matson, met the problem and soon had it conquered. Babbling Brooks, the junior class play, directed by drama coach John Lehman, starring Sally Given and Milton Markewitz was a hilarious smash. An after-game dance was also a success, especially in its financial aspect. Swinging On a Star, the junior-senior prom presented June 1, by the juniors in honor of the seniors, proved to be one of the outstanding social events of the year. Recovering from this impression, they have been developing friends, good study habits, and enthusiastic school spirit as they delve into new areas of knowledge. Frosh were regally welcomed by both the senior and sophomore classes at the Holiday Hello and the Freshie Frolic. Although they were for the first time plunged into a six-subject program, many were able to attain a place on the Honor Roll. wx' Getting freshmen and seniors acquainted was one of the jobs of the Freshie Fro1ic. Having refreshments after the entertainment, the members of both classes are engaged in their first social. Freshmen class advisers and couselors are Mr. Roy Lindsay and Miss Ruth Arbuckle. Movement started and put into effect of giving after-game dance proceeds to general S. B. Fund and class funds so that everyone profits, rather than a limited group. 2. Serious effort put forth in selecting committee membership entirely on the basis of capability, choosing students from a wide range of it and backgrounds, who had never served on a S. B. committee. 3. Candidates now wear identification badges previous to elections and run-off candidates are presented in an assembly before voting. 4. Entire club program evaluated with proposals and suggestions for possible future improvements when the time is ripe and discussion of other club programs. 5. Proposal for money appropriation to Wilson presented before SBg as result of student opinion, open discussion groups were held with many students participating, as well as general SB discussion, followup action resulted. 6. This year's budget evaluated, changed, then approved. In keeping with this goal, they also initiated evening student body discussion meetings. The cabinet worked on other ways to benefit the student body. They dealt with assembly conduct and worked toward a new assembly conduct policy. Working on the problem of continuance of the Jamboree, they polled student opinion and carried Lincoln's affirmative vote back to Interschool Council. Within the school, students' suggestions were put into effect whenever possible fulfilling such requests as the post- ing of the school calendar, and arranging for the social room to be reopened at lunch. ,N ll-Sw sshd SPRING STUDENT BODY CABINET V05 ERIC BLITZ STEWART BUTLER LYNN HARGREAVES Athletic Board Rep Cardinal Editor School Service Rep 'Q 5, I ily: gn xfgiligr n f' Q MISS FRANCES ELMER JEAN PATTERSON JACK VOLLSTEDT Advisor School Service Rep School Service Rep XM UWWWWW 5, i 2 Q fi wi BARONS - Social Row l - M. Highlight of their year was the Christmas presentation of A Child Is Born Under the excellent leadership of two student directors, Bob Wagner and Marshal Pancheau, four numbers were performed. At this time the madrigal singers were introduced to the audience by Mr. Bell. This twelve-member group's paramount object is to delve further into ballad-type music and to get a deeper appreciation of early day composing. First, the association honored the faculty at the Board Tea in October. That was followed by a Get Acquainted dinner at which exchange student Anita Dalen from Sweden, and Barry Dowsett, Bill Farrens, and Sue Fisher, Lincoln's AFS exchange students to Europe last summer, all spoke. Many parents thronged the halls and classrooms of Lincoln in November to meet their children's teachers and learn what is being done in their classrooms, when the annual Back to School Night was held. The annual Bake Sale also held that night, netted S321 for the treasury, Miss Helen Schaper, director of curriculum, for the Portland public schools, spoke on Education 1957-tools, types, and trends at the February meeting. The rummage sale headed by Mrs. Earl Williams netted S562 in March. In April the association elected its officers for the coming year. They were installed in May. Also in May, the present PTA honored next year's freshmen mothers at a tea. It was followed by the senior tea for the seniors and their mothers, faculty and administration, held in the home of Carolyn Wall, May 22. Final activity of the year was the senior picnic on the Lewis and Clark College campus, which the PTA traditionally gives for the graduating class. Incomes disclosed by treasurer Mrs. Leslie Sherman reached S994 during the year from which S190 was allotted for scholarship funds and money for athletic awards, student aid, and the senior tea and picnic. THE 1957 CAMELLIA SHOW As butterflies fluttered into season, and all the earth stirred with fresh new life, girls donned their swirly frocks and the scene was set for the sixteenth annual Camellia Show sponsered by Girls League. A traditional court reigned over the entire show which included a floral display, an Oriental tea, and the Queen's Ball. Lincolnites were kept in suspense about the identity of their Camellia royalty until the maidens, one by one, demurely lowered their flower-bedecked parasols at the Camellia assembly revealing Queen Judy Severtson, and Princesses Judy Hornbrook, Toni Kienow, Signe Toly, Anne Darling, Jean Jackson, and Denise Dowd. More than two hundred entries transformed the social room into a wonderland of beauty. Maureen Corbin took the sweepstake in the single division While the home economics class took the sweepstake awards for elegant arrangement done in a massive Oriental vase. Wearing brightly colored kimonos, girls of Oriental ancestry added a picturesque touch as they served at the Oriental tea. Mid-year rolls around and it's time for the annual Christmas Formal. Santa Claus is in his crowning glory, as icicles, candy canes, and snowflakes lend a frosty glow to the scene of the Winter Sno-ball. The setting for the Kappa Zeta Mardi Gras was gay and vivid. 'I'his year the May Fete court was chock full of potential queens, but there was only room for one--and pretty, petite Susan Wilhelm was chosen for the honor by the students of Lincoln. The courts first official duty was to knight students and faculty during the May Fete assembly for their outstanding se1'vice to the school. The lovely court also reigned over the traditional May Fete dance. Jack Vollstedt and Tom Triplett were too busy running arolmd the track to have their pictures taken with the rest of the Cross Country team but we didn't leave them out. Junior-Senior Prom Q '15 MRS. EDITH KARNOPP MRS. HILMA MUIR Another year draws to a close and so do the many years of service to Lincoln for Mrs. Hilma Muir and Mrs. Edith Karnopp. These two people will always be remembered and in the future we hope they will think back on us with the same feeling and memories that we have for them. We hate to see them leave and we hope they will recognize us when we meet in the years to come. We wish to thank Gladys and Gene Gilbert for the wonderful pictures in this book.
