Back row il-rl: Assistant Coach Bill Hoagland, Julius The 1979-80 men's basketball team finished ninth in the nation, the best a Lincoln College squad has done in the 115-year history of the school. Coach Al Pickering's crew took a season record of 21-7 into the sectional tournament to begin their drive to the National junior College Athletic Association tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. After winning the sectional in Belleville, the Lynx moved to the state tournament in Danville, where they beat Kennedy-King College, 86-78, for the state championship. From the state tournament, the Lynx trekked to Cagers F ini h Dowagiac, Mich., where they had their closest call, beating Vincennes, Ind., 76-74, for the right to play in Hutchinson for everything. They started well, zonking Cloud County lKan.l Community College by 89-77. But a national title wasn't in the cards as the Lynx fell in their next game to a tall and heavy Western Texas College squad, 100-79. In their final game of the 1979-80 season, the Lynx went against Community College of Baltimore for the right to advance and compete for the fifth spot in the nation. Poinsette, lim Cuny, Mike Cioeken, Fred Watkins, jerry Renfrow, Mark Wilkins, Steve Kirby and Coach Al Pickering. Ninth In Nation Our guys held a 31-27 halftime edge, but eventually lost a heartbreaker when Eddie lones's 18-foot shot at the buzzer rimmed the basketiand spun away. Lincoln College averaged 84.7 points per game this season and ended with an overall record of 28- 9. jones was the leading scorer with 626 points, which translates into a hefty 17.3 points per game. Fred Watkins was second with 567 points 119.5 per gamei and was far and away the team's leading rebounder. He had 255 in regular season competition. Right behind in the scoring department was Julius Poinsette. He tallied 565 for a 15.2 average and was the leader in assists with a whopping 160. Rounding out the top five scorers were Captain Dan Pitchers l333J, and Mike Goeken 11765. For what was supposed to be a rebuilding year the 1979-80 Lynx were nothing short of magnificent. les A .J si , ',l K M u Cutting down the net after taking state title.
