This year has been an expecially signi- ficant one, as President Dooley points out in his message on page 5. The ac- complishments and experiences of this year will unfold on the following pages It is with humility that we incorporate in this book the spirit expressed in our school seal: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The opening of the Student Center and Carroll Hall were significant steps forward in the program of increasing the campus facilities. More students attended Lincoln College in this year than any in its previous history. With the growth, however, the College will continue to service to the student. We like to think that Lincoln and will continue to be, a precision instrument in the world during an era when many institutions have become instruments of mass production. emphasize College is, academic necessarily I Want to congratulate the editors of the Lynxite for selecting as their theme the College motto which liberally translated means The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The continuation of the scripture in Proverbs is HA knowledge of the holy is understand ing. Lincoln College is proud to be an interefaith institution with students and staff members who come from a wide variety of denomina- tions and faiths. ln developing our philosophy of education and our individual philosophies of life, we hope that the students and faculty will be inspired to follow the traditions of simplicity, sincerity, and service as exemplified in the life of our great namesake, Abraham Lincoln. With all good wishes to each of you for the years ahead. Cordially yours, 4 . , R nd Dooley President 5 DEDICATIO Roger cushman We, the staff of the 1963 Lynxite, proudly dedicate our yearbook to a man who has given time, effort, and advice to the Lynxite. In the two years as a faculty member at Lincoln he has taught English and Journalism classes and on the side has been advisor to both the newspaper and yearbook. Yet he still had time to spare to become a staff member for the Bloomington Pantagraph for a total of nine years. His education consisted of attending Illinois Normal University where he received a Bachelor Degree and now is working part time at Illinois Southern University for his masters in English. Therefore we dedicate this Lynxite to you, Mr. Roger Cushman, for your time and advice given to us, your staff, as well as many other students. Now after two years of service to Lincoln College you have decided to leave. To this we wish you the best of happiness in whatever you partake. We thank you for your understanding and interest in the rights and freedoms of the individual which has really shown us, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom, Lynxite Staff 6 Q 4 . . 1 4 1 fix ' 5 1 v 1 'H 1 l f' Q' 3 fi. It does not mean a final departure, though for Lincoln has become a home, it has a meaning to which graduates return in spirit as well as in person. Commencement is a beginning of something else--more college, a job, marriage, a life in which, one way or another, all that we have learned will be demanded and put to use. At the end of these two years we feel that we are at the beginning of a responsible freedomg not a freedom that self- indulgently proclaims haphazard license, but a freedom that enables us to discern the good and strong in a world of confused and conflicting values and endless choice. lf we have learned here at Lincoln that freedom is a matter of responsible self-discipline and sober evaluation, surely we are better fitted both to fulfill our own potentialities and to accept the challenge of life in today's world. We will know that fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. I8 Wig' ha... , SOPHOMORES PHYLLIS ADAMS . . .Palatine, Squirt --- Art Club, Eikosi Korai. Future - Ray Vogue School of Art. To make them remember their status, they had to wear the hated green beanies. Hopefully they soon outgrew them. In general, this year was one of adjustment to courses, teachers, college activities, and Lincoln's customs. It was a difficult year, but one rich with learning and growth. There is but one year left at Lincoln, but it could not be any more rewarding than the one just past. That was a year filled with hard work and many exciting times. But all look forward with high hopes and great expectations to the coming academic year. 31 wg fI'T '! K' Em' wb 53. HN- MQW ,C 5Qerf FRESHMEN ANTHONY ADOMENAS . . . Chicago DAVID ALINSKY . . Lynn was killed in a freak tractor accident near his home in Monticello, Illinois, on April 9, l963. Students will remember Lynng his calm and steady attitude was a source of strength to his many friends. His teachers will remember Lynn, for in class he was an excellent student, one who would not be satisfied with doing less than his best. Lynn Hays will also be remembered by participants in theater. He had gained their respect in winning the leading role in The Lesson, a play in rehearsal at the time of his death. And Lynn Hays will also be remembered by the community, for his voice was a familiar one on radio station WPRC. Many things we shall remember. We are the richer for having known him. David H. Harts David H. Harts, the spiritual father of Lincoln College, died on November 27, 1962, at the age of 83. His loss was mourned by all who knew him. Mr. Harts was described by President Dooley as an inspiration to the students and faculty alike. Certainly Mr. Harts, as past president of the Board of Managers and Trustees, was dedicated to the future of Lincoln College. During his life he helped the school through many periods of crisis, and after his death his warmth for the college was evidenced by the generosity of his gifts to the school. Space does not permit the listing of all Mr. Harts did for Lincoln College. Indeed, much of his assistance was done anonymously. His memory will be cherished by all friends of the college and will be perpetuated by a new science building to be named in his honor. Now the time is come to say farewell to one or two years of education at Lincoln. We have all learned a great deal through classes, the fac- ulty, and the students, with whom we came in contact. Not one of these pages is for any one of you in particular, but it is compiled so that you might remember a happy moment, an ami- able acquaintance, a triumph or a downfall. We leave now to continue our education to return here next year, or to attend another school or to work and, some, to enter the service. We will all depart on our paths maybel never to meet again, but memories will keep us to- gether. Through this 1963 Lynxite we hope you will remember the fun, laughter and hardships that have brought Lincoln to you. Through the faculty and students we have leamed that The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom. I want to express my sincere thanks to my staff and especially Mr. Roger Cushman, advisor, for the efforts made to make this 1963 Lynxite a yearbook of treasured memories.
