To an outsider this may sound like any other school year, but to us it is the most important year--WE are the SENIORS. School opened on Sept. 14, with only a half day of school, thanks to the workmen. Our old friend, Mr. Sprague, -came on Sept. I7 to get our magazine drive underway. He wouldn't promise us the clmtom ary ice cream if we topped Boothbay--it wouldn't be good for Boothbay's morale! On Sept. 25, the seniors welcomed GJ the Freshman class in the Gym. lwish you could have seen Wayne Peterson being pushed around the Gym in a baby carriage by Mr. Bailey. He made an adorable baby with his bonnet and bottle of milk. It was on Sept. 28 that a Jackson-White representative came to photograph each individual senior. It must be a wonderful life doing nothing but trying to make people smile all dayl Oct. I was a great day. The magazine drive ended with a record-breaking total of 320481 The seniors surprised the school by rising from fourth place to first place. lwonder how the seniors sold S300 worth of magazines in one nightl Of course they hadn't been holding any back! Can you imagine the stir when the Lincolnian Board and the Senior Class Play cast were announced on Oct. 2. lt sure looked like a lot of work. On Oct. I6 and I7 we had a short but very welcome vacation. I think teachers' convention should come more than once a year. lwish you could have attended the Sophomore Hop on Oct. 25. The Gym was pleasing to the eye with its effective decorations of black silhouettes and black and white streamers. The Ioth of November is a historic date. Never before has Lincoln Academy had such talent in its Senior Class Play and never before have they presented such a play as Don't Take My Penny . You would have enjoyed seeing Bub Bailey. He was a most convincing young lady. We spent Nov. I 3 polishing the schoolhouse from top to bottom for its first showing to the public. It is really surprising what a group of people can do in a short time if they make up their minds to do it. Mr. Green spoke to the seniors and we went happily home to beg from our not so happy parents enough money to pay for our Washington Trip. I'll bet our parents wish that he hadn't made that trip sound so thrilling. On Dec. I8 we celebrated the coming of our Christmas vacation with a movie. lt was pretty old, but at least it was a ta1kie. The student body elected Janice O'Brien and Lannie Oliver, Sir Lincoln and Miss Lincolnette, on Jan. 28. We were very proud, and lthink you would have been too,' when Mr. Bailey announced that James Birkett had won an honorable mention in a nation-wide science talent search. Finally on Feb. I9, we will send our Lincolnian to press and then we can breathe again. Ihope you will see our radiant class on April I6, as we step on the bus to start for Washington. That is the day we have been awaiting four years. It will be May 25 that ten trembling Juniors will climb to the stage in the Gym and vainly try to remember pieces that they thought were carefully learned. Three days later they will attend something that they can enjoy, their Prom. Good Luck, Juniorsl Class Day exercises will be held in the Gym on June 14. That evening we will attend our first Alumni banquet though we aren't QUITE Alumni. Graduation and Graduation Ball, on June I5, mark the end of the school year and the end of high school life for the Class of I954. Very sincere ly yours, I 7 14 iw .xXSN ff -fa7 Q Q fa ,iii- flu i -1,lXfYL Rqiv-4 uw I 1 W iw n W . .fir Q. 3:-f-M41 A ' ' ,nt 4 -..fx .siilj Ri A -Q gI'Q5Al'l'l2l'l The Freshman Class has been very active this year in sports and activities of every kind. In the fall We raised money by selling Christmas cards. A very successful Sadie Hawkins dance was held in October which also helped fill our coffers. We were the first class to reach its quota in the magazine drive even though We finish- ed third. The school sold a record 32047. 80 worth of magazines. This is more than a 191 increase over last year's SI650. 91. From this year 's sales the school received 3741. 74. This money is allotted, as decided by the Student Council, to the various organizations and sports which can not support themselves financially. The general chairman of the drive was David Bel- knap, who was assisted by Jack French. Class chairmen were Jean French and James Birkett for the Seniors, Mar- jorie Curtis and Herbert Hixon for the Juniors, Carol Greenleaf and Nathan Witham for the Sophomores, and Patsy Elliman and Charles Giles for the Freshmen. The highest salesman was Wayne Anderson, who sold 3116. 50. Close behind him was David Belknap, who sold SIO6. 50. Other high salesmen were Mary Watson, Jack French, and Jean French. The Seniors took first place, with the Juniors second. They were entertained at a social by the Freshmen and Sophomores. A movie was shown to all those who sold two or more subscriptions. With excellent coaching by Mrs. Chamberlain and outstanding co-operation from the cast and stage CIBW, the Play W3S 3. g1'8at SUCCESS. Don't Take My Penny was based on sixteen-year-old, movie-struck Penny, who struts about the stage with a book on her head to acquire good posture and orates with pebbles in her mouth to improve her diction. All these 'sacrifices' are made to impress a visiting author, who believes he can find the ideal girl to star in his novel, which is soon to be produced as a movie. Try as she will, however, Penny is no match for her boy friend and his chum of many ideas when they decide that Penny should not go to Hollywood. The play was full of fun with good parts for all. Each member of the cast was well suited to his role and gave an excellent performance. The cast was as follows: Penny . . . . Betty Jean Whitham Sally .... . Cynthia Giles Norman Porter . . We have engaged Mr. Green to conduct our tours The itinerary includes New York City, Washington, Philadelphia, Gettysburg, Valley Forge, Yorktown, Shenandoah Valley, Endless Caverns, Skyline Drive, and many other points of interest and of educational value. 39 Lincoln Academy, September, 1953 ffl I wish I could picture to you Lincoln Academy as it is now. You would never recognize the building with the shining new office and the new corridor almost long enough to run the one hundred yard dash in. Swarms of workmen are in and out of the building, painting window frames an the walls in the corridor. The steady bang, bang of the hammers and the rhythmic rasping of the saws drown out our voices in the classroom. The shouts of the workmen in a usually quiet school disturbs our thoughts as we try to study. The new classrooms are so big and airy that some of our classes are lost in them. The sound of the new bell makes us jump. You would miss the sound of the gong because it is only used in emergencies. The hot little room at the west end of the corridor is gone, and in its place is a room for supplies. The room next to it, that has held Mr. Pinkham's biology specimens, will soon be the natural history room. Soon now the two rooms on the third floor will be empty. The commercial department is to be moved to the second floor to the former English room. Even the outside looks better. The window casings and the doors have all been painted white, and the long, low addition behind the original structure is a joy to behold. 1942 I wish it were possible to make you see and hear Lincoln Academy at this time. The hustle, bustle, people getting in each other's way, carpenters and brick layers mingling with students as classes change, and above all the constant noise. The cement mixer that sits outside the classroom window persistently does its best to disrupt the class with its chug, bang, chug, bang! The over ambitious carpenter finds something that must be hammered just as your teacher is explaining the difference between H20 and HZOZ. When the noise gets out of hand, those causing it are not hushed. That would not be polite! Those who suffer are simply moved to a quieter room. You may be thankful that you cannot hear Lincoln Academy's power saws, busy carpeitil, and clumsy plumbersg but you should see the Academy! Besides ordering a beautifm-new brick addition of our rooms to be built, the trustees have seen to it that the old building has a face- lifting. For a week or so busy painters have been SCL11'1'ying up and down the red brick walls slapping white paint on the window frames and on the trim. It makes the old look like new! ,ssl .,Gre enie., 'laglitor Gel-lthne lea . r nlmess is n Ext To God lin essn leg 9 fue wks. Pmeq Yosxex exexia Cook Sxaii oi Xikd' Cai 6 is ine Bum wks.
