Breaking Through Communication Barriers The first year of Latin is a study of the forms and constructions of the language with stress on its application to English, literature, and culture. The second year adds a more complete knowledge of the language such as Caesar ' s commen- taries. In all areas of life there is a need for effective oral communication. Speech students gain confidence by speaking in front of their classmates. Their goal is to be able to speak in any situation at any time in a capable manner. The English Department is using an in- tegrated program this year. Through this we hope to eliminate the artificial division of English into two subjects-- English and Literature. All aspects of our language --literature, composi- tion, grammar, and speech- -are being taught as a single unified subject. Is it colored chalk? Votes are in! Carols ' our new teacher! Students Link Yesterday with Tomorrow Relaxing at LHS. No, the ear doesn ' t go there. No silly- -that ' s not China. Physics labs are fun. Where is Texas? Beginning in the sophomore year, the student learns where America stands in the history of the world by taking world history. In the junior year the develop- ment of our country from the colonial period to the present is studied in U.S. history. Government and economics are the subjects studied by the seniors. In Government the student is taught how our government is run. In economics he is taught how our economic system is op- erated and how it is compatible with our system of government. The science course begins with biology in the freshman year. Biology reveals the secrets of the living cell, both plant and animal. The power of energy and how it performs work is studied in physics during the junior year. The atom, the elements, and the properties of compounds and ions are studied in chemistry during the senior year.
