nineteen sixty-four LANCE 12th edition Ligonier High School Ligonier, Indiana LIFE A r LIGONIER LIMELIGHT ON LHS Life in the town of Ligonier is a blend of farmers, industrial workers, busi- nessmen, homemakers, and the stu- dents who will soon become the adults of the community. Fast growing and friendly, withcivic pride the community contributes greatly to the success of our school. L.H.S. is a happy mixture with the accent on scholarship in aca- demics, order in organizations, spirit in sports, and pleasantness in person- alities. The challenges we meet in the classrooms prepare us for a better future. The friendships we have made and the many hours of fun we ' ve en- joyed will always be remembered as an integral part of school life. Now the limelight is on L.H.S. --it ' s classrooms and activities . Learning together. Breaking Through Communication Barriers The first year of Latin is a study of the forms and constructions of the language with stress on its application to English, literature, and culture. The second year adds a more complete knowledge of the language such as Caesar ' s commen- taries. In all areas of life there is a need for effective oral communication. Speech students gain confidence by speaking in front of their classmates. Their goal is to be able to speak in any situation at any time in a capable manner. The English Department is using an in- tegrated program this year. Through this we hope to eliminate the artificial division of English into two subjects-- English and Literature. All aspects of our language --literature, composi- tion, grammar, and speech- -are being taught as a single unified subject. Is it colored chalk? Votes are in! Carols ' our new teacher! Don, I thought you knew all the STYLES! Students Link Yesterday with Tomorrow Relaxing at LHS. No, the ear doesn ' t go there. No silly- -that ' s not China. Physics labs are fun. Where is Texas? Beginning in the sophomore year, the student learns where America stands in the history of the world by taking world history. In the junior year the develop- ment of our country from the colonial period to the present is studied in U.S. history. Government and economics are the subjects studied by the seniors. In Government the student is taught how our government is run. In economics he is taught how our economic system is op- erated and how it is compatible with our system of government. The science course begins with biology in the freshman year. Biology reveals the secrets of the living cell, both plant and animal. The power of energy and how it performs work is studied in physics during the junior year. The atom, the elements, and the properties of compounds and ions are studied in chemistry during the senior year. Facts and Figures Fly Thru a Busy World Eyes on your copy ! The first year of mathematics includes algebra or general math which teaches the fundamental ideas later applied in advanced courses. Lines and angles, circles and squares, theorems and as- sumptions, are all part of sophomore geometry. The junior year is filled with trigonometry and solid geometry. To terminate the four years, advanced al- gebra is taught as a senior subject. Commerce requires accuracy and ef- ficiency which are the basic principles in office work. Students are instructed in general business, bookkeeping. Typing I and II, Shorthand I and II, and office practice. Future secretaries learn to take dictation, to type correct letter forms, and to master business arith- metic. Graduates find that business education is helpful in securing a good position. Ready-Set--Go! The perpendicular plane is parallel to the adjacent obtuse angle. Are you a Knucklehead or a Knothead? 10 Health and Safety Go Hand in Hand Physical education is a two-year require- ment for all high school students. Its pri- mary purpose is to develop physical skills as well as physical fitness. Health and safety, which is required for all sophomores, emphasizes learning how the body functions as well as the essentials of the healthy life. Due to the expanded na- tional interests in total physical fitness, these courses have a growing importance in our high school curriculum. Driver education strives to tighten the loose nut behind the wheel or to loosen the tight nut from behind the wheel. It is offered to develop the attitude, judgment, and fundamental skills necessary to pre- vent traffic accidents with their tragic sacrifice of human lives. Up — down, Up--down! All wrapped up in their work. You can ' t measure the gym that way! Where ' s the motor? Vocational Studies Aid Our Future Lives The home economics curriculum con- sists of the following subject matter: Home Nursing, Housing, Home Furn- ishings, and Home Management; Family Relations and Child Development; Foods and Nutrition; Consumer Education; and Clothing and Textiles. Several phases of the subject materials are taught at each grade level . Vocational agriculture begins with the basic study of livestock and crop pro- duction. As the boys advance in the vo- cational agriculture curriculum, they learn the managerial aspects of farming in the classroom (with projects) and on the farm. Judging livestock, crops, and soil adds to their experience. Learning farm mechanics rounds out their final year of studying agriculture. Working with wood, the freshmen shop boys learn to use hand tools. Advancing to power tools the next year, they con- struct projects from metal, wood, and plastic. Juniors and seniors study drawingand blueprints in drafting. They finish with a floor plan of a house. Watch those Pinkies, Leroy ! Crumbs, in my slide rule? Mother ' s little helpers. I ' d rather do it myself, Mr. Sponhauer! Appreciation of Art and Music Is Stressed Enjoying music and having fun. The art course must include a variety of art fields to give a sampling rather than a comprehensive teaching of arts and crafts. It is possible to have an art major or minor if the student has some ability and a strong willingness to work. Our music program has two departments: instrumental and vocal. The purposes are to give the students a basic music education and to provide a center for cultural and artistic development in our educational system through public con- tests and appearances. Young artists? Come blow your horn. Clay play. 13 Help and Understanding Through Guidance The teacher plays aa important part in the daily guidance of students. He not only guides them in subject matter areas but also in vocational, personal, and extra -curricular activities . The teacher is dedicated to the whole development of his students and is eager to help them succeed in their educational pursuits. The guidance counselor provides data and individual information which may aid teachers in their understanding and instruction of individual students. By means of tests, counseling, and informa- tional services, the counselor helps stu- dents to realize their strengths, weak- nesses, educational and vocational op- portunities, and their personal -social adjustment to life. The counselor works closely with teachers and administrators in helping provide the best possible ed- ucation for each student in the school. Gathering information. THIMK! Planning ahead. The boys own or keep records on at least one crop and one livestock project on their home farms. This provides for an excellent learning opportunity outside the classroom. Some of the activities we participated in, besides our regular monthly meetings, were a trip to St. Louis and the Ozarks, a trip to the International Livestock Show, a FFA basketball team, soybean and sorghum crops, and FFA judg- ing contests . To further carry out the nautical theme, Harbor Lights, a miniature light- house projected light on the dance floor, and nets and a rowboat accented a mural of the darkened harbor The Ambassadors, an ensemble from Manchester College, provided music for dancing. Preceding the dance, the juniors, seniors, and the faculty members dined at the M M Restaurant. Gary Link, school music in- structor, was toastmaster for the banquet. A theatre party at the Crystal was held after the dance. The city police headed the cara- van of cars to the theatre, where members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce were waiting to park the cars. As the guests entered the theatre over a red carpet, they were interviewed by James Jarmin and Robert Kidd. As a fitting conclusion to the all-night ac- tivities, the mothers of the junior class members served a delicious breakfast. 56 Honor Students and Officers Lead Class mkm NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY S. events, And knowledge we ' ll hold from this day hence. The friends we made that shared in the fun Helped us find pride in all that was done. There were moments of kindness, planning, and thought That helped us toward the goals that we sought. The blunders and mistakes that we regret, We can ' t erase, but we ' ll try to forget. The Limelight dims, and the old year ' s gone; We set aside the tablets we ' ve written on. And torn ' twixt hope and joy and fear, We close the book of a wonderful year. 104 c
