Class Flower: Red Carnation Class Colors: Red and White The seniors started the year by electing class of- ficers and student council representatives. During the year we sponsored four WOWO Record Hops which netted us a good profit to be used for our trip. We also held several cake raffles during the basketball season. At Christmas we sold snow spray and paint and also raffled off a table model radio. At last the time came when we took our long- awaited trip to New York and Washington, D. C. They were kept hopping with their magazine and candy sales in October and November. This, how- ever, was nothing compared to the energy they have to put forth selling concessions at the basket- ball games. The Junior-Senior Prom was held in the gym on May 16th. This affair is always eagerly awaited by many upperclassmen as well as the faculty members. It was the highlight of the school year. Their second project was the ordering of their class rings the latter part of the semester. With the supervision and help of their class sponsor, Mr. King, they held a party last November in the gym. A newspaper requires a tremendous amount of skill, such as good artists, reporters, typists, and production personnel. The TIMES carries regular news, sports, and gos- sip columns. The main part of the paper is the feature section, which carries columns designed to make the reader laugh. The library staff gives assistance to Mrs. Dragoo, our librarian, by helping students select books that will bring interest to their studies and enjoyment to themselves. They are also a big help in keeping the library in order. The office staff acts as an assistant to Mr. Longenbaugh. These students not only keep the attendance records and report cards in order but they also make our programs for various school activities. Another major task they perform is the typing of tests for teachers. Each year the band presents two very enjoyable concerts, one in the spring, the other in the fall. Of course, a ball game is always more exciting when there is a snappy band to play between the games. The Ligonier Band played at nearly all the home games during the season and presented two clever marching' shows at halftime! Besides these activities the band goes to the district contest held in March each year. If a band rates a first at District Contest, it is eligible for the State Contest. The six twirlers, with Karen Peterson as majorette, added a lot to the band. They took turns twirling at the home games and also served as flag bearers. Each year they also go to the contest and, we are proud to say, come home with high honors. The Junior Band is composed of 35 members, ranging from grades 5 to 8. They present small concerts at the same time as the Senior Band, in the spring and fall. r Junior Band Earl King Twirlers 49 FIRST ROW Cleft to rightj: Marilyn Spears, Linda Caskey, Marilyn Taggart, Judy Trowbridge, Elizabeth Poppy, Martha Slabaugh, Valerie Michaels, Connie White, Doris Kaplan. The suspicious son and daughter, Chuck and Sharon, mistakenly thought that Susan was making a play for their father. Chuck tries to remedy the situation and found himself in a hot water solution prepared by the widow. Sharon's boyfriend, she decided, was a crook but he turned out to be the family benefactor and Charles, in welcoming an old flame of his wife's, unwittingly posed as a butler and felt it necessary to maintain that disguise for awhile. Eventually, of course, all the tangled threads of the plot were unraveled and serenity again returned to the Ruggles household. y Cast of ha racters Sharon Ruggles . The play took place in a spooky old mansion that had been shut up for a long time. Two refined maiden ladies with their two attractive nieces and dumb-dora maid decided to rent the place. While the real estate agent was taking his prospective renters over the house to show it, two queer, rough-looking men scurried across the stage carrying the bloody-faced body of a man. A strange white-faced woman dressed in black appeared on the stairway, but disappeared when she heard people coming. The ladies decided to move in at once--and then the excitement began. Miss unt Cathie's T f Cathie decided to go to the cellar to feed her pet cat. She failed to return. Groans were heard. A policeman was sent for. We have been studying about the different countries of the world in geography, At present we are learning the customs and ways of living in Japan. ln art class we have been studying the early Egyptian drawings and paintings that appear in the pyramids. We have also been learning the correct method of drawing people. Gifts were exchanged at the Christmas party held in their room. On December 18th they participated in the annual Christmas program. 64 Fifth Grade The fifth grade motto for the year has been, Do right for everyone likes a good sport. Some of the things we have tried to do and accomplish are: Keeping notebooks in such a way that we will be proud to own them and giving book reports every six weeks. The use of good English and neat writing has been emphasized in all subjects. We've enjoyed discussing current events at various times. We have placed much value and im- portance upon citizenship and fair play. In history they studied pioneers from Spain, England, Holland, France and how the United States began. -In geography they studied the following units: Iceland, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Lands of the Mediterranean. Most of the pupils enjoyed these units and have brought dolls and other articles which their brothers and relatives who are in the service sent them. r s .1 , ,Q 1 f 4? , 54 nv . Third Grade This year we have been working hard on the third grade subject matter, which a child must know to be- come a good fourth grader. We are trying to make it interesting with experiments in science and nature study, races in arithmetic, and dramatizations of some of our reading stories. 'We have heard some of the classic stories and poems. We have learned many new songs. Good manners, politeness, and citizenship are stressed, and we have tried always to live by the Golden Rule. We have tried to realize that a pupil in the third grade is becoming more like an adult. Our lessons and our play time have been planned along this basis. 67 Elizabeth Beck FIRST ROW fLeft to Righty: Dennis Orewiler, Jerry Myers, Steve Rollins, Catherine Metsker, Mike Birch, Elaine Elijah. As the weeks passed, several more students joined us. During the first six weeks we had nearly a perfect attendance, then the flu came into our room. In January we had many absences from the chickenpox. We have had several projects during the year: one to encourage attendance, one to encourage parents visiting school, another to promote good eating habits, and one to encourage reading. Perfect scores in spelling are al- ways rewarded. We also have a music teacher and an art teacher who teach us twice a week. Helen Sherwin 68 First and econd Grades During the first grade of the child's educational career, the most important thing is leaming to read. Of course, we do many other things to create interest and relieve the monotony of drill, but our first goal is to read. In the second grade we strive to read and spell better each day. We change from manuscript to cursive writ- ing, which is always a big event in the child's life. 1 Another important goal is learning to play and work together. Courtesy, safety, honesty, reliability and cleanliness are taught on the play ground as well as in the school room. We want to be happy every day so we follow the Golden Rule--to do to others as we would that they should do to us. This has helped us on the playground and in the room. We try to be good citizens so all our friends and parents will be proud of us. We know our First Grade means a lot to us so we do our work the best we can. When we read we feel our book friends are real friends. lt is fun to play their part in asstory. We churned butter one day. Yum! Was it delicious on crackers! We are corresponding with other First Graders in Angola, Kendallville, Scott, and Magna, Utah. We have reading, writing, arithmetic, spelling, phonics, music, and art.
