ozectaza 77Ze The world has always concerned Itself wIth deVlC6S for measurement and the accumulatnon of these If properly categorIzed would prove to be an ImposIng If not ImpossIble document Many of these deVlCeS each of us uses daIly and they have become so common In actual use that none of us IS completely aware of theIr Importance Students generally conceIve of measurement almost exclusIvely In the fIelds of testIng and gradIng In sublect matter fIelds where rulers mIcroscopes slIde rules and other re quIred paraphernalIa are accepted as tools of learIng The events In the Fall of 1957 focused In blIndIng lIght what many consIdered an emergency need for adequate and drastIc measures to In crease the scIentIfIc content of school currIcula from prImary to post graduate levels Our faIlure to measure effectIvely the progress of the UnIted States and the other free COUHTFISS In these fIelds seemed palnfully apparent The vIsIbIe evIdence that scIentIfIc superIorIty has passed from the West to the RussIans makes clear the fact that our means for calcula tIng and measurIng our progress agaInst theIrs were at fault From the near pandemonlum whIch developed there emerged a fflghfenlngly SVI dent trend toward basIng all Iudgment CODCSFHIHQ future SSCUYITY and happlness upon regaInIng superIorIty In the SCISHTITIC fIeld Although no one can properly questIon the OdVISGbIlIfY of steppmg up and IncreasIng the currIculum content to Include proper traInIng In scIence and mathe matIcs It seems Important to muffle the pGnlC bell In those school areas where such traInIng now does EXIST ThIs mufflIng of the frIghtenIng sound wIth whIch any alarm bell fIlls the aIr makes possIble Improvement In the presentatlon of courses In SCIENCE and mathematIcs wIthout Sllmlndflng but rather also Improvlng the equally Important courses In the humanItIes ThIs TIGER of T958 should If carefully read QIVS pOSIlIVe proof that the needed and necessary traInIng for leadershlp In the world the world of scIence and of human affaIrs can be accomplIshed wIthout educatIonal rescue squads re surveyIng surveys on currIcula and the probably result Ing lopsIded currIcula whIch could emerge If those who see but one phase of the pendulum s SWIHQ become the dlrectors of destIny The most Im portant thIng that our T958 TIGER represents IS the students COmpendIUm of the year s actIvItIes dIvIded equItably and reported honestly The one factor whIch melds thIs report Into a sIgnIfIcant whole IS the students un derstandIng that the reported parts of school lIfe all belong and no pIcture of theIr school experIence for the year would have proper dImenSlOn If It were separated from the whole ThIS wIsdom of youth If understood and QUIded represents the promIse of ultImate IeadershIp wIthIn our own country and among those countrIes whIch share our understandIng for the need of IndIvIdual freedom To develop wIthIn thIs framework skIlls and GbIlIlIeS possessed by our stu dents IS the certaIn method of guaranteelng securIty for all securIty ultImately depends upon one s Gblllly and wIllIngness to work constantly In varIed fIelds to achleve It I 1 I I 1 1 ' 1 1 1 ' ' ' ' ll ' ll I 1 1 I I 1 ' 1 ' , .... . . , . , ... .. . . . . . .. . , . . .
