Since her first teaching position in 1954, Mrs. Pugh has taught every course offered by the English department. She hasn't, ,L W however, limited her involvement to curricular activities. Q She has sponsored many organizations, including the Sophomore 'lf class, AFS, Liberty Bell, and the outstanding Category Team. Also, she has served as advisor for the SPECTATOR over the past fifteen years, truly a job in itself. When asked about her plans after retirement, Mrs. Pugh replied, I intend to spend my time making fudge, shopping, reading mysteries, playing bridge, and traveling. Reflecting over those twenty-three years, we realize that Mrs. Pugh has es- tablished a record of which both she and the educational community can be proud. Few educators exhibit this kind of responsibility and devotion to their service. From our hearts, we thank you Mrs. Pugh! SeCfCtafY to the B0afd Administration Relates to Students Dr. Jon S. Ferguson, Principal Dr. Jon S. Ferguson, principal at LHS, is returning for his third year, having joined the administration in 1975. Dr. Ferguson is impressed and pleased with the unusually high degree of social' consciousness possessed by the students at LHS, and he finds their responsible behavior commendable. Freedom with responsibility is an important concept to me, and the vast majority of the student body here seems willing and capable of assuming the responsibilities necessitated by the freedoms given them. This year at LHS, eleven new courses have been added to the curriculum, and Dr. Ferguson feels that this increase will be beneficial to the school. We are continuing to strengthen our curriculum and to make the course offerings compatible with the career goals of our students. The wider range of class choices available is encouraging to Dr. Ferguson, and he takes pride in the tradition of continuing excellence at LHS. Mr. C. W. Stessman is now in his fifth year at LHS serving in the capacity of assistant principal. Previously he taught and coached at Liberty, and finds the change to an administrative post to be different but still enjoyable. Dr. Ferguson looks forward to the special of the day? Mr. C. W. The members of the AFS club had no trouble keeping busy this year. Students participated in a wide range of activities designed to raise money and to help them to get to know each other. AFS kick- ed off the new school year with a welcome-home party for Brenda Shaver, who had spend three months in Australia. An Ice Cream Social followed to introduce Yushiro and Alice. Holly sales were arranged to finance future exchange programs, and a weiner roast was held to celebrate the end of the holly sales. During the Fall Festival, AFS used their booth to sell holly and distribute informa- tion about their organization. A domestic exchange program involved Lee Ann Bush, who spent the spring semester in St. Paul, Minnesota. Participation among the students is the key to an active and benefi- cial AFS program. , l 2 Yushiro directs Markis attempt to bring the chopsticks under control. The Concert Choir is a select ensem- ble of sixty voices. At Christmas two concerts were given: the annual Christ- mas Concert here in Liberty and a spe- cial Christmas concert at the Alameda Plaza Hotel on the Plaza. The Concert Choir has been chosen as one of four choirs from the entire state to perform January 20 at the 1978 Missouri Music Educators Association Convention in Jefferson City. Their spring activities include par- ticipation in District Music Contest, the Spring Concert, and Baccalaureate. With a great deal of emotion, David sings a heartbreaking song. Liberty Cross Country runners finished this year's season with an outstanding record. The Varsity team had l 12 wins and only 20 losses. The Jays had strong senior leadership from Bruce Gossett and Bobby Canfield, a four year cross country letterman. Bruce placed 33rd in the state finals, the best finish ever for a Liberty runner. Outstanding accomplishments for the team this season were capturing the Conference champion- ship and placing third at District. The Junior Varsity also boasts a strong record 'for the sea- son, 84 wins against 15 losses. Prospects are good for another successful season next year, since only two lettermen are leav- ing the team. The seven remaining cross country lettermen should help perpetuate Liberty's winning tradition. 128 Bruce is willing to crawl through mud and tread water in his attempt to reach the finish line first. ,..,,,,L,g..f-s..,.. ...Q--?.....,,.-N nr.-arp- wr' 'S 5 x , Q! xx N Miss Kath 1, A .,xx u ,T X - 2 x , U ,Z Homgcoming I ing and Queen S ww Berr MV. On the way to the top the Bluejays ran over four conference rivals with relative ease before meet- ing conference co-leader Excelsior Springs in the season finale. The Jays defeated the Tigers in a tough battle 18-14 before a near-capacity crowd at Greene Memorial Stadium. This win en- i abled the Jays to claim the prized Dueling Pistols and the Suburban Small Six Conference championship. The 1977 foot ball season was the first time in forty-two years that the Blue- jays had won an undisputed conference championship. 1 I 134 s Ss Backed by tremendous desire, David Roberts attempts blocking a scoring opportunity. As we round another bend of life, we leave remnants of ourselves and take with us the memories of a chat with a friend, the influence of a teacher, and the learning we attain through our studies. Although the school year of 1978 is gone, we hope the memories will remain preserved through your SPECTATOR. As you reflect upon this year, you can relive a time gone by but not lost. To Mrs Pugh With Appreciation Teaching that others may learn, Giving of time and talents, Sharing with others-self, Dedication to a purposeg Uur thanks for all youfve done To help each of us As an individual grow.
