This year we welcome Mr. Robert Bucker to the vocal music department. Mr. Bucker received his Master of Mu- sic degree from the University of Mis- souri-Conservatory of Music in Kan- sas City. Before coming to the Liberty School system, Mr. Bucker taught for two years at Lafayette High School in St. Joseph and two years at Northgate Junior High in North Kansas City, Morgan is amazed at Mr. Bucker's ability to play chopsticks. The getting-to-know-each-other Ice Cream Social early in the fall quickly gave way to a bake sale. The Christmas season brought a holly sale and a potluck dinner that was highlighted with a presentation by Christine Krahl, our exchange student from Bre- men, West Germany. As a gift to Christine, the stu- dents paid for a telephone call home to her parents. Soon after, Rachel Johnson returned from Dode- canes, an island in Greece, where she spent the first semester. Spring was climaxed by the annual Walk for AFS. Interest in the exchange programs of AFS grew this year. Not only did Rachel Johnson go to Greece, but Philip Brooks spent the year in Jalhay, Liege, Belgium: and a number of students applied for ei- ther domestic or summer exchanges. All in all, this proved to be a great year for AFS. 0 Marilee shows Christine where American pork chops come from X Liberty Hosts Christine During the 1976-1977 school year, L.H.S. welcomed a new and special student-Christine Krahl of Bremen, West Germany. Christine was a member of the Fred Long family while staying in Liberty. Christine found the choice of classes refreshing and admired the way teachers and students work together in the American school system. In West Germany, schools are stricter and more basic in their approach to education. Christine was highly involved in extracurricular activities during her stay. She played on the girls, volleyball and basket- ball teams while staying active in L. Club, Pep Club, and A.F.S. She was also a member of Girl Scouts and a church-affiliated youth group. Through her experiences this year, Christine realized some- thing very important-that people are the same everywhere. Christine is a very special person, and to her we extend our best wishes! Rachel Travels to Greece September 8, 1976, was the beginning of three and one-half months of unforgettable times for Rachel Johnson, an L.H.S. senior. Rachel was a member of the International Cultural Action Learning Program which took her to Kalymnos, a small Greek island. She and nine other American students lived with two Grecian students and two teachers there. Although there was no structured school for her to attend, Rachel spent much of her time learning Greek, studying Greece itself, and taking anthropological and archaeological field trips. Since her return, she has continued her study of the Greek language and hopes to mas- ter it someday. On her trip, Rachel learned much, not only about Greece, but also about cultures different from our own. We at Liberty High School are grateful to her for sharing her knowledge with us. My ,Q-tl? Mr. Beldin's cookies aren't as popular as Mrs. Rhoades's punch. 8 Under the direction of Mir. Bucker, the Concert Choir gave a splendid performance at the Christmas assembly. ggaw as Q ,, wrwssifliriff 'i - f , .Q ,r,,, .4 ,,,, , Mrs. Jones is convinced the punch has been spiked, but Mrs. Boggs keeps right on pouring. We at LHS began our well-deserved Christmas vacation on December 22 with a memorable holiday assembly. The program included outstanding per- formances by the Symphonic Band, Mixed Chorus, and the Concert Choir. The highlight of the assembly, however, was the arrival of Mike Littlejohn in his cameo appearance as Santa Claus. Mr. Littlejohn put on an adequate performance, but one must fear that his future lies in education rather than the Theater. Keep at it, Mr. Littlejohn! During the assembly, the commons area was in the middle of a transfor- mation. Members of the faculty had graciously donated their time and efforts in preparing the refreshments and decorations for the Second Annual LHS Christmas Party. The alarming rate at which the cookies, cakes, candy, and punch were consumed was indicative of the party's success. The entire stu- dent body deeply appreciates the thoughtfulness and generosity of our faculty, and hopes that the Christmas party will continue to be a lasting tradi- tion at Liberty High. Students Respond to Election '76 P Liberty students receive special coverage of their Election Day activi- tres Election Day, November 2, had a special significance for the faculty and students of Liberty High School. Three mov- ies, ALL THE KING'S MEN, THE LAST HURRAH, and MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, were presented to give students a better insight into government and a clearer under- standing of politics. Students participated in a seminar orga- nized by Miss Cornett's social studies class, where a mock de- bate was staged and students were able to express their view- points concerning topics they felt strongly about. The two students who debated were Mary Coogan, who played the role of President Ford, and Laura Burns, who played Jimmy Carter. The faculty felt that they had an obligation, as instructors in an educational institution and as people who love and re- spect the country, to help the students become aware of the importance of Election Day and of voting on that day. Small American flags were distributed to each student who voted in the poll to help emphasize this idea. The interest and par- ticipation ofthe students indicated that the day was a success. ,MJ Mar' Ms. Moore and Mr. Dunn display their patriotic Election Day spirit. Mrs Ryczek and Mr. Ellis are pleased with the involvement of the students in the discussion seminar.
