Coach Miller had a Ietterman for every line position and three backfield positions. After an intra-squad scrimmage to show our team and new uni- forms we were ready to encounter our first foe of the season. Traveling to Park Hill, Liberty showed their offen- sive strength by defeating the Trogans 27-l2. The Jays moved the ball consistently every time they had posses- sion. Bernard Liverman was the sparkplug of the Blueiay attack, scoring 4 touchdowns and 25 points. Down by l9 points at halftime in our opening home and conference game against Lexington, the Jays battled back in a determined comeback only to lose a heartbreaking l3-l9. The following week Liberty was simply out-classed and outplayed by a strong North Kansas City squad in losing 32-O. After allowing a 26 point lst half, a determined Blueiay defense held the Hornets scoreless until the final play of the game. A highly rated Slater team invaded the Blueiay's home field and took home an l8-Oyictory. The Jays rushed 228 yards to Slater's 80 but our pass defense fell apart which allowed Slater all their scores. Moving on to Richmond the Blueiays were the victims of a 4th quarter surge by the Spartans and were defeated in the last minutes by a margin of l9 to l3. The highlight of the evening was Tom Wiltshire's 66 yard touchdown gallop. , ,The most important game of the Blueiay's season was the 7-6 defeat handed to Excelsior Springs in our annual Homecoming game. The Bluejays played inspired football throughout the contest, and put up an outstanding defense that the Tigers couldn't penetrate. Bill Van Note sup- plied our touchdown and Jim Hurt kicked the winning point. The victory enabled Liberty to once again regain the dueling pistols. Following our Homecoming, the Blueiays tangled with undefeated Higginsville. After a slow start Higginsville turned the game into a track meet with Liberty taking mostly seconds. The Corn- huskers 37-O win proved to everyone that they were worthy of the conference championship. Playing in Marshall's wet Homecoming game, Liberty gave the Owls a tough game even though losing by a lopsided 27-7 margin. Tom Wiltshire accounted for our lone tally on a 35 yard end sweep. A fired-up Carrollton squad, in their Homecoming game, squeezed by the Blueiays for a l3-6 victory in our final M. R.V.C. game. Liberty scored the first time they got the ball but couldn't hit paydirt again. Fumbles were costly for the Jays as 2 set up both Trogan scores. In the final game of the season, Liberty was defeated l9-7 on William Chrisman's rain-soaked field. After a 7-7 halftime score, Chrisman came back to tally twice more as a result of Liberty's fumbles. The Jays finished with a 2-8 seasonal record and a l-6 record in the conference, tying them for last place. 5 COACHES V Head Coachg Phil Miller, Freshman Coach, Kenneth Cokley, Line Coach: Fred Merrell. Opening up the season in the annual M. R.V.C. Tournament at Richmond, the Jays slipped by Lexington and Slater for the right to play in the finals against a strong Marshall squad. Trailing by 13 points at halftime, the Blue- iays put on a spectacular comeback to defeat the Owls 57-51 and bring home the championship trophy. In our first regularl scheduled contest, a non-conference game at St. Joseph, the Jays were handed their first defeat of the season by Central 53-51 Beginning the conference campaign, Liberty set back five consecutive opponents, including Carrollton 44-41 in our annual Courtwarming game, be- fore being turned back by Marshall 51-48 in an overtime game at Liberty. After routing Lexington, Liberty played host to powerful Raytown. The Blueiays, running their first zone defense in 16 years under Coach Kenneth Cokely, upset favored Raytown by the score of 42-36. Continuing in M.R.V.C. play, the Jays took decisive victories over Higginsville, Richmond, and Carrollton. Traveling to Slater, the Jays were upset by an unstoppable Wildcat five for their worst defeat of the season. Next the .lays were faced with their most important game of the season, played at Marshall. A win would mean a share in the conference crown for Liberty. In a nip and tuck battle, the Owls squeezed out a 1 point victory to gain their third consecutive M. R.V.C. championship. The following week, Liberty played in its final M.R.V.C. game against Excelsior Springs, winning 50-32 to sew up a second place tie with Slater. Moving on to the Regional Tournament at Independence, Liberty opened up by defeating Manual, 60-44. Our semi-final game with Van Horn ended in a 6 point victory for the Falcons. Wan Horn went on to cop the title.j The Jays played their final game of the season against a larger Northtown squad. Trailing 10 points at halftime, the Blueiays showed their determination and ability to come-back by winning the game 48-47 and the 3rd. place cup to climax a successful 17-5 seasonal record. Our B-Team also had an outstanding season compiling a 12-4 record and finishing in a tie with Excelsior Springs for the B-Team championship. Prior to the Regional Tournament the team selected Fred Cathy, Lar Driggers, and Gary Jones as honorary tri-captains for the year. This directs their own buying, as well as the buying of their families, to the Liberty merchants. Both now and in the future, when our buying power has increased, we shall remember and re- turn the help given to us by our business friends. We appreciate the interest shown by the local business firms mentioned, and we hope that this book gives a clearer understanding of our school and its activ- ities.
