This play, however, was much more than just an evening of laughter. There was a rare understanding in it of young people. The title appropriately came from this line-- where hearts were high and fortunes low--and onions in the stew. get W 2 . It was something new and different, because it was a western. The story centered around two cousins, who inherited a dude ranch at Cross Roads Canyon, Colorado. The schemes that Kitty, the more impetuous cousin, concocted turned into a boomerang every time. Even the hold-up she planned to give the guests a thrill, took an unexpected PI I turn. Liberty jumped to a quick lead with Gentry Thomason scoring on a one- yard plunge and Bob Hufft returning a punt 60 yards early in the game. Tom Wiltshire, Larry Driggers, and Gentry Thomason again added tallies. The halftime score was 20-7 in favor of Liberty. Our first conference game with Lexington High School was postponed one day because of rain. The Blueiays played a nip and tuck game all the way. Lexington had a halftime lead of 6-0. Liberty came back strong with Don Smith and Walter Kelley each scoring a touchdown on a plunge. Lexington added another T. D. in the third quarter to tie the score. Facing a powerful North Kansas City team Liberty was decisively beaten 33-0. The undefeated Hornets had a half time lead of 26-0, but could tally only once in the second half against a tougher defense. Liberty was upset the next week by the best team Slater has had in years. Slater led 7-0 at the half but Liberty couldn't come back. Elmer McGinnis scored a touchdown but it was called back. Hungry for victory, Miller's crew now took on Richmond in a homecoming game. On Richmond's first play of the game, a Spartan ran 70 yards for a T. D. , but Liberty bounced back with a long touchdown pass to Thomason. After a 7-6 halftime lead, Liberty bounced back with two more touchdowns by Thomason, and one by Larry Crisler on a pass interception and run of 40 yards. Renewing our rivalry with Excelsior Springs, we iumped off to a 14-0 lead on passes to Thomason. Excelsior came back to make the score 14-7 at the half in favor of Liberty. Liberty had high hopes of recovering the pistols until the last five minutes when Excelsior scored the winning touchdown . Weakened with the flu epidemic, Liberty traveled to Higginsville. The conference champs beat Liberty 31-0 on a cold night. Several players were still ill with the flu when Liberty met Marshall. Thomason scored twice in the second quarter and Marshall led 14-13 at the half but they came back with two more touchdowns to defeat us. Liberty completely outclassed Carrollton in the next game. Liberty led 28-0 at the half and the B team played most of the second half. The Blueiay scoring was done by Walter Kelley, Tom Wiltshire, Bob Hufft, and Gentry Thomason who scored twice. We played William Chrisman for the first time in years. Outweighed in the line and backfield, the determined Liberty team scored both touchdowns in the second quarter for a win. Thomason scored T. D. 's. The Liberty defense held the Bears off on the goal line several times in the scoreless fourth quarter. This year, Jim Hurt kicked all our extra points. He scored 13 points and one accounted for the winning of a game. Gentry Thomason, an honorable mention all-conference player, set a new school scoring record of 73 points. Much credit goes to our new coaches, Phil Miller and Fred Merrill who did a excellent job. The underclass lettermen, all iuniors, were Jim Hurt, Bill Todd, Jim Riggs, Bernard Live.-man, Larry Driggers, Gary Jones, Gary Brown, Tom Wiltshire, Nile Carrothers, and Selden Hirni . 7 SENIOR Elmer McGinnis-End Fine Pair of Hands -3 Y' QI k I X - Sam Carter-Guard Melvin Harmon-Tackle Plugs Line on Defense Gentry Thomason-Halfback Bob Hufft-Quarterback Hardest Runner on Team Good Passing Arm QR-. The letterman The Liberty Basket a ea was Elmer McGinnis, but four more boys came through well to help comprise the first five. These boys were Bill Wymore, Fred Cathy, Gary Jones, and Larry Driggers. Robert Sevier and Bob Hufft were the other two members helping to make up the A team. The Blueiays, lacking experience, were not expected to do very well this year, but they compiled a I4-I0 record to help make a very successful season . We were third in conference play behind Marshall and Slater who tied for first. The conference record of the Jays was 10-4 The Liberty team took second in the William Jewell Tournament behind Grain Valley. Liberty led most of the way in the championship game but lost in the final minutes. After getting a bye in the first game of the Richmond Tournament and beating Excelsior Springs in the second game we were defeated by Sedalia Smith-Cotton and Marshall to finish out fourth best. ln regional play the Liberty five defeated Trenton in the first game and fell to Central of St. Joseph and Chillicothe in the next two games to finish out fourth in the tournament. The B team piloted by Phil Miller compiled a very successful lO-5 record. The B team is composed of underclassmen and is the future Blueiay team. The Liberty Freshman team went undefeated this year with a 19-0 record. They won the Kearney, Liberty, and Excelsior Springs tournaments. They are coached by Fred Merrill and much is expected of them in future years. l B TEAM SCORES Liberty Raytown Liberty Lexington Liberty Higginsville Liberty Carrol l ton Liberty Slater Liberty Richmond Liberty Marshall Liberty Lexington Liberty Excelsior Liberty Slater Liberty Richmond Liberty Carrollton Liberty Marshall Liberty Higginsville Excelsior Liberty TE BOTTOM ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Larry Brown, Leroy Rice Larry Dnggers Tom Wiltshire.
