The veterans eager for the first game were Max Moyer, Jim Miller, Gentry Thomason, David Petty, Ron Gabbert, backs, and Jim Millen, Dick Martin, Ron Brant, Jim Reeds, RobertMcMillian, Bill Crawford, and Kent McClard, linemen. HOLD THAT USER! l l These boys were the best prospects Liberty had had forseveral years and great things were expected of them. There were nine games to be played and the Blueiays had their eyes on a conference championship. Off to a good start, we went to Park Hill for the first game of the season. David Petty was a stand-out in this game with 19 points. All Blueiay points were scored in the first half and the B team played the second half. Final score showed Liberty 38, Park Hill 6. Next we encountered Lexington in the first conference game of the season. Lexington, the favorite, had a half-time lead of 20-7 Sparked by Max Moyer's 19 points and a determined team, Liberty won 21-20. After this victory North Kansas City came to try their luck at Liberty. Before a crowd of 5,000 Liberty received their first defeat of the season, being defeated 25-19 after a half-time lead of 13-6. Jim Miller had 2 touchdowns. Ron Mathis scored the other T.D. on a 30 yard run. Slater was now slated to play Liberty, and Liberty collected two touchdowns from Max Moyer, and one from David Petty and Gentry Thomason and rolled over Slater 26-7. Don Dye received a broken arm in the game. Traveling to Richmond we encountered a tough Spartan team. After taking a qUiCk 7-0 lead, Liberty was defeated 14-7. Jim Miller passed to Kent McClard for the only score. With only seconds left Liberty had one T.D. called back and were inside the ten, but time ran out. Our Homecoming game was with Excelsior Springs. Watched by 6,000 spectators we were defeated 13-7, after a scoreless first half. With seconds left David Petty ran a kick off back 85 yards only to have a clipping penalty nullify it to a 50 yard return. Max Moyer scored the only touchdown. Higginsville now came to Liberty only to be defeated 38-0. Liberty was led by Max Moyer's 3 touchdowns and Jim Miller's passing to Kent McClard to help accumulate 214 yards in the air. Traveling to Marshall the Blueiay eleven were after another victory which they received 19-7 Liberty was led by Jim Miller scoring 2 touchdowns and his passing to Robert McMillian for the third T.D. Going to Carrolton for a supposedly tough game Liberty came out on top 40-0, scoring 20 points each half. Moyer racked up 2 touchdowns and Bill Crawford intercepted a pass and Jim Lowe recovered a fumble, both going the distance. Liberty wound up with a 6-3 win-loss record. Much credit goes to our fine coaches, Robert Hailey, Phil Miller, and Kenneth Cokely. The linemen, who usually aren't publicized, deserve recognition too. The All-Conference players from Liberty were Max Moyer, Jim Miller, Dick Martin, and Jim Millen. Honorable mention went to David Petty, Jim Reeds, Bill Crawford, and Robert McMillian Max Moyer and Jim Millen were placed on the third All-District team. ' The new lettermen were.: Pat Duval, Jim Lowe, Ron Mathis, Bill Stickford, Jasper Monroe, Donald Cathy, Seniors, and Don Smith, Sam Carter, Larry Gove, Larry Crisler, Walter Kelly, Juniors, and Gary Brown, Sophomore. ilmfqz-,,LJ,Lg. tg- , , - ' .EEL Mglfi. .,: 3 L.,1,' . 5 :J .-:': :T ': ',.'.f,.-QE 3 -:ze-g5mfLf 1L. Jewell 'rrophy fu 5' x Q I 957 Baalzetball Repont Late November was the time for the Liberty Blueiay five to report to basketball practice. Two starters from last years' conference champions were Charles Rutherford and Dave Williams. Three other lettermen reported for this practice. They were Max Moyer, Kent McClard, and Chal Beisenherz. Jim Miller, Gary Moore, Donald Gabbert, Ron Mathis and Elmer McGinnis helped compose the A team. Getting off to a quick start the Blueiay five opened by winning the William Jewell Tournament. It was a thrilling event all the way with Liberty beating Lawson the first game, Lillis, Qlast years' championsi the second game, by one point, and finally beating Lee's Summit 42-41 on Gary Moore 's last-second basket. Lee 's Summit had led all the way. Now, it was the Richmond Tournament. After two quick and easy games with Oak Grove and Richmond, Liberty played Marshall in a nip and tuck battle all the way, finally coming out on top 53-50. ln a home game Liberty had their six-game victory streak cut short by Kansas City Central. Next, at the Lee's Summit tournament the Blueiays lost two close ones to William Chrisman and Clinton. Liberty now started in regular conference play and took their first four games before being defeated by Marshall. They next got revenge on Lexington for their pre-Christmas defeat, by defeating them 65-46. Excelsior, Slater, and Richmond were the next victims of Cokely's crew before Marshall again stopped Liberty 63-55. After this Carrollton was defeated 74-60. While playing Higginsville Charles Rutherford broke the individual record for the high school by scoring thirty-nine points, in an easy game. Higginsville was defeated in this game 75-39. Liberty stood third in conference play this year with Marshall coming in first and Lexington second. The conference record was T4-3, and the over-all record was I7-7. In the district tournament Liberty was defeated their first game by St. Joseph Lafayette 56-53. Liberty at one time was ahead T6 points, but the Blueiays got cold and Lafayette caught up to make it an exciting finish. The B team piloted by Coach Robert Hailey held a I0-5 winning record. They were defeated twice by Marshall, Slater, Excelsior Springs, and Lexington twice.
