Through the years, many of the activities of our school days will grow dim in our minds. In recalling the happiest years of our lives, vivid glimpses of our school days will come to life as we reminisce with the photographs we've collected. Should we forget in the years to come, we need only open our Spectator and those precious memories will be ours . O1'1Ce 'l'I1OI'e. This group we call ----- the Spectators. Their faith in our ability and our faith in their support have resulted in a stead- fast and ever-growing bond between the school and community. Although it m-ay be difficult for us to express our gratitude in other ways, it is with pride that we take this opportunity to dedicate this 195 Yearbook to the Spectators of Liberty High School Activities. 5 Zu, , Kathy Hughes Elaine Hicks 14442 001402 Martha LaFrenz COVER ARTIST Tom Sherwood z-feel' if Sharon Rotsch Mrs. D. Again we give special recognition to our Board of Education. It is they who are responsible for our excellent school system and our well qualified faculty. Their untiring efforts to improve our school have made L. H.S. a place of which we can be proud. These men have helped to make it possible for the students to become good American citizens and to go out into the world and face problems as they come. To them we give our special thanks. gmzdofg ' ECONOMY DEPT. STORE North side of lj The Store for Entire Family 57 MR. R. R. BROCK MR. I. E. MMM! 5 The year is 1990. ln an old frame house on Har- rison Street, a figure sits in a rocking chair, slowly moving back and forth while puffing contentedly on his favorite pipe. Suddenly two small children run excitedly into the room. Gran'pa, Gran'pa, tell us a story!Tell us 'bout when you were a football coach an' everything. The old man takes the pipe from his lips and blows a cloud of smoke. Well, Grandson, you just hop up here on old Gran'pa Hailey's lap and I'll tell ' you about the season of 1954. Well, as I recall, we started the season with nine Q, returning lettermen. Things looked pretty good as we had plenty of boys to fill the holes left in the lineup when most of the linemen graduated. Ken Jones, Dick Scott, and Berk Stanley held starting positions in the line for the first time. David Petty, Delma Kidd, Jim Coleberd and Bob Curley saw extensive action in the backfield for their first year, while Bill Crawford, Max Moyer, and Robert McMillian were new faces in amz mae., the defensive lineup. Yep, that season got off to a big start as we downed Park Hill 14-0. Fredericks got off two passes that counted for the necessary points to sink Park Hill for the first time in the two-year old rivalry. Our joy was short-lived, however, as the Minutemen from Lexington turned .the following game into a trackmeet with Liberty taking mostly seconds. Lexington's huge line and four hard-charging backs racked up our worst defeat of the season and went on to take the confer- ence crown. Fredericks threw to Crum for our only score and the final was 31-6. The next week, my boys were up in arms against the invading Raytowners who were pro- tecting a long winning streak. McDonald scored twice and Fredericks added one in the first half to take a lead over the visitors, but in the second half Raytown simply wore us down and came out on top with a Z5-19 win. Yes sir, we were pretty hungry for a win and Slater was just the team to fill the bill. Moyer recovered two Wildcat fumbles for 12. points to high light the game as we went on to make it Liberty 33-Slater 0. The following game was a bad one for us. It was Richmond's homecoming and they were up for the game. We sure weren't, and a pass from Fredericks to Warren was the only score we posted as the Spartans flattened us 2.0-6. The next week was our homecoming and the traditional rivalry between us and Excelsior was going full blast, The game got off to a bang-up start as Excelsior's first play went all the way for six big points. They kicked off and Petty took the ball back 88 yards to even up the score. Fredericks threw for two t. d. 's and evened up the score in the last quarter. But after the Jays had held a 12. point lead, we were downed in the last 50 seconds as the Tigers pushed over the winning t. d. to take home the pistols. Our ace quarterback threw for three and ran for two to sink Higginsville, former champs, 33-6 the following week. Allan Crum, who had switched to fullback, ran for 12 points and John Willis hauled down an Owl pass for six to lay the groundwork for a Liberty victory. Fredericks added one for insurance and we stomped Marshall 25-5. Carrollton was crushed 33-14 in the final game of the season as long pass interception runs accounted for two Bluejay tallies. An all senior team played most of the game to finish their high school career with a 5-4 record. Ed Fredericks, Allan Crum, and Cecil Warren gained places on the all conference squad, and Dick Scott got honorable mention. At the end of the season the team elected Ed Freder- icks and Allan Crurn as Co-Captains for the year and ....... Well I'll be! The little Sl'1aV61'S have gone to sleep! The old man sits back and takes a long drag on his pipe again. Oh well, anyway, it's good to think of the old days .......... From this hub Hailey was to build the wheel that would be his 1954 track squad. All he needed now was some spokes. it The spokes came thick and fast as Jim Garner, a newcomer from Lexington, Q broad jumped his way to the number one spot in the conference. Alan Holt, Keith Q5 I McDonald, Max Moyer, John Grahl, Dwayne Thomas, and Bob Rice were also iid? leading point getters. I The first meet saw Liberty in a three-way meet with Lexington and Wentworth. It was no problem to defeat Lexington, but Wentworth was a horse of another color I and Liberty came out in second place. I v yt A The next meet was perhaps the hardest fought and the most heartbreaking of lp the year as the Bluejays lost to Excelsior Springs in a very close battle. Excelsior li: won by three points. After finishing rather far down the totem-pole in the Jewell Invitational, the tracksters bounced back strong to sweep the conference meet and win the if conference title for the third straight year. The team really showed their power lj here as they took five firsts. is W The final meet of the season was the district meet at Maryville, in which ' Liberty placed third. , r' As we look back at the track that this wheel made, we see that it is quite MQ 1 wide and that the wheel rolled some distance. We can also read by the impression J that Dick Gabbert was the leading man in the points department. Robert Horrell J Q and Dan Triplett were tied for second with Jim Garner in third.
