It is hoped that this edition will always help you ----- to relive and recall some of those days on the sunset hill of glory ---- to keep echoing in your mind those memories ---- and to help you retain that Bluejay fighting spirit. This yearbook represents your high school life ---- a life of friend- ships, enjoyments and loyalty to your school, to the Blue and the White for which it stands. If, through this yearbook, these things may be kept in your minds and if this book may deepen our great love for thee, then truly ---- the goal of the Spectator Staff will have been achieved. 2 'w-45 KW N K :Q QW.: ,Sala UQQ U HR :fir 47 ' K7 ,rg I, ' f 1 .s ,Z C gi: ' 4 --' , ...cs-2 ,:jL,, fm.. , ,,,... -. .al ,,,','. - 1, .Qi'YL5,1,,.1' K- f ,,.f , Y,-V Y Hb, f k A, L fd fav F' ,Q Si x' 'A ' 4125 mf' 'Ng -e E----lbi 'Ki im n 'A g , 7 .gi ,lg lff' S 1 !',,- X :ij ein' , 'a ,K fr' X . ,X ff ZARY unch Li fl VP '2 Kd' WE fqlzavd' e co1-' 'F il, Jl.Q1-'j fa -1 qu' J T1 U -1 my-hm A sxfsixifirix ny? f IWHNPII :req rift 2 ff is rrfg 54253585 '- pf' rn JZ :EQCACQ fl0I'l The students of L1berty I-hgh School have rece1ved a herltage r1ch ln trad1t1on and achlevernent Through the past flfty years many trad1t1ons have been re corded 1n the yearbooks trad1t1ons of standards pr1nc1p1es student act1v1t1es and 1dea1s It 1S the purpose of th1s yearbook to honor these tradltlons by recordlng the events of the school year 1953 1954 And so lt 1S w1th a great deal of prlde that we the Spectator Staff of 1954 do dedlcate thls Golden Ann1versary Ed1t1OD to the Trad1t1ons of L1berty I-hgh School '51 .i X S 'T 1' .i......C- -1- X an ' -9 Q as so s ws if K V Wi.,--'f-- Vi ff' ....- - ' -- 7- - M ff FU i A 5- X ST ,r rimw'-1.,,e- r-n-r..s,a if of Q f' 'lr ff iii T' in at ' Il rr 'effgiff T AJ ' 3125 fff U11 im L or L 1 1. mr ,J 1 1 :R H s s . -1 M f--.-,. Elaine Hicks RESUME In coming years when other moons Spill silver over ivied walls, When other voices, other laughter Echo through these silent halls, We shall remember afternoons Of cool and crisp Septembers, Of football games and marching bands, And Sunless, cold Novembers. We shall remember one short spring With long-forgotten music filled When childish things were put away Because we had a world to build. We shall remember all of these, The small, inconsequential things, When other voices, other laughter Echo through the coming springs. Willa Ruth Lewis Williams 4 7 M l. The continuity of our lives in generations of traditions contributes to stability in the present and to an extended vision of the future. Where there is no vision, the people perish is a much quoted Pro- verb, as is Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. Fifty years ago, I was the teacher-sponsor of the first Liberty High School Annual, whose title was The Voice of the Free. The theme chosen for the 1954 Spectator is Traditions. To me this seems peculiarly appropriate. May the I... H. S. The first ratings received by these groups at both district and state music contests for the past several years, is proof of the fine quality of music produced by this department. We, at Liberty High, are proud to possess one of the largest bands in our dis- trict. Our band may be seen at all town functions and is always present with an original skit at the half of every home football game. The basic purpose behind the idea is to promote Basketball season and bring it to a climax just as Homecoming does during the Football season. The word Courtwarming was, therefore, con- ceived from the game of Basketball, ' Un December 18, 1953, planned and executed by the Student Council, this day in- cluded competitive class skits pertaining to basketball, held in the afternoon, with prizes being awarded for the three top performances. This year, the Seniors' version of the Peter Potter Television Show won first place. At the end of these skits, the Courtwarming Queen and her two attendants were announced and crowned. These girls were elected by the Basketball Squad That night, our wonderful Basketball team played Higginsville and beat them by several points After the game, a dance was held 1n the Study Hall complete with a five piece band and beautiful decorations During the intermission, the queens were once more presented and escorted to their thrones as Miss Sue Cates sang W1nter Wonderland in their honor So ended what we termed a very successful first Courtwarming celebration at Liberty High School ng ,,,.,,,g ff 14 J! .MJT 9. fy e ' i FV Ml N11 , , ,- ,.,, v4 f: sy,'35:,4 , . . The couple's danced to the mellow music of John Alexander's Men of Note and enjoyed the two solos of the evening by Miss Sue Cates and Mr. Bob Henderson, At 9:45 the music stopped and the big moment was at hand ---- the drawing for the boxes of candy and the announcement and crowning of the Popularity Court. Miss Judy Craig acted as Mistress of Ceremonies and proceeded to hand the boxes of candy to Kent Mattison and Ed Bum- garner who held the lucky numbers. Then followed the crowning ceremony and the moments of joy and congratu- lations! After an evening of delightful music and dancing the 1954 Sweetheart Dance came to a successful close. 72 X X 'QQ B lushing Ro -CR Yalfyl 77 5 CX yl L xSZC0lfL6l .X4ff8fl6!CUflf:5 Rae HCWIHS 'T' f 73 Egg-51-L-5g. .,::c.1::T::r:'.xi: r-ff:-1 .,::: 4:-f11...: .Li - .--A 1-: --. -.::4:'Tf F3-L11-'T11??-f'f--f1f'f'-Lf'f1f:F 4' it mn Mfg! h i f , 1: ., f , 1 . .,,ff,!M,?, , ,M GW ,iff My L - ' 5 ,-' f 1-A 1 f ff V525 W ' ueefl ,, HIRNI .n...f Mt .1 .AL ..,f.g.4-uuvuanmz.-n ..-.1...uf.g.Q..4.. .- .u . ,, f V11 r i2E!5ff!:-f 4143-51, ' ' Q 'frgyqfff' jr fsgjj. f, f ,, ' y4.yyff .Q fg-ff, ffg, r 2, 'I V f J 2. f : . affix Www? by 4 17 'C 1 + X' ,l .4-fm' - , 1 ffnfvfm :Sw ' I ,, gf ,4Q,fQ2w,,,., 'ef f J 5 ?4:'Zw',Zf V - , S f .4 7955. There were 10 games played, with the L. H. S. boys winning 8, tying 1, and losing one, The first game of the year was a big victory for the Liberty eleven, The boys played Lillis High School of Kansas City and came out on top 18- 13. ln our first conference game at Lexington, we scored on the first play of the game, but waited until the closing seconds to score on a safety for an 8-6 victory. The next game, with Park Hill, ended in a 6-6 tie. Then came the long trip to Slater. It 6 6 . proved very successful though, with 0 - the Bluejays winning 27-7. The B team played a large part of this game. Our Homecoming game was played against a strong Richmond eleven The Spartans scored first but soon the Bluejays caught fire and the game ended with Liberty winning 2.1 7 The biggest game of the year was played with Excelsior Springs on their home field Before Dan Triplett and Kenny Robertson a capacity crowd of 5 000 people the Bluegays gave their fans a spectacular perform ance winning the thriller by a score of 14 6 to keep the dueling plstols for the second straight year Our game with Higginsville was the championship game for the Missouri River Valley Conference Crown The Cornhuskers scored on a freak pass at the end of the f1rst half This ended the scoring for both teams The Bluejays outrushed the Corn huskers by 102 yards to 58 but the score was 6 O with Higginsvllle winning the Cham pionship The next game was against a tough Marshall eleven but Ha1ley's crew managed to chalk up Z0 points to Marshall's 6 Liberty got revenge for its only conference loss last year by beating Carrollton 19 7 The season ended with an afternoon game against the Cameron Dragons In this non conference tilt the Jays came out on top 19 12 to end a great season Bob Dye guard Dan Triplett fullback Allan Crund end and EdFreder1cks quarterback were named to the M R V C All Star Squad Dan Triplett was placed on the Kansas City All District first team and Bob Dye received honorable mention Triplett also received All State honorable mention A lot of credit for our good season goes to our big l1ne There were four boys who weighed over 200 pounds The greatest credit of course goes to our coach Bob Hailey a frlend to everyone a man of great character and one of the fine st coaches in the state of Mis souri 79 . s ' . s Q ' , - , - . 1 C 1 , - - - s . 1 ' ' 4 ' , I , , 9 9 9 1 1 . . . . . . . n : 9 4 . . . y olgffermen COPQAOCLI' 6 Robert Horrell DiCk Gabbeff Halfback End Z4 M .Sy CZUCI, .
