Best Wishes from LIBERTY BEAUTY SHOP One of the most important and active organizations at L, H, S, is the music f th l rou s and the band. The vocal groups, department, composed o e voca g p by all their audiences throughout the year. Among the these groups, one of the most outstanding was the Christmas Cantata which was broadcast over radio station KIMO. This production was presented by the entire mixed chorus under the direction of Miss Rust and her able accompanist, Miss Mildred Bluhm. Also deserving much praise is the L, I-I, S. concert and marching band under the direction of Mr. Clinton Maness. The band's halftime performances at the foot- ball games Were outstanding, as were their concert performances. We were very proud to have our high school band appear on television during the Christmas season, in which they marchedin the annual Christmas parade. We are indeed fortunate to have with us these directors of the music department and We take this opportunity to thank them for their patience , their time , and their tale nt. under the splendid supervision of Miss Margaret Rust, have been Well received many ,pe rformances by X yr fu - 1 :W '- LW ff X I 7 3 ' My M , Wifi! Jay- Each year it is a tradition of Liberty High School to choose a beauty queen from the girls of the senior class. She is chosen for natural beauty, poise, and charm by judges who are impartial and do not know the girls. This year the judges were Miss Harriet Barnes and Miss Mary Stegner, airline hostesses and Mr. Bob Davis, hair- dresser from 1VIacy's department store. They were very cordial, friendly and sin,- cere people who, after the contest was over, gave the senior girls rnany helpful tips on hair styling and the qualifications to become an airline hostess. This year the student body voted to have two attendents to the queen, which is something that has never been done in the past. There werelnine finalists at the close of the elimination process. They were Kay Carr, Judy Anderson, Suzie Pence, Bessie Gentry, Martha Yancey, Carolyn Haynes, Jerry Pollard, Barbara Boone and Marilyn Henion. , l 1 '1 . wg: Saw 153' !J'SQ- 2221- A 5- .2 kwa- K :gigs-'fi , , 5, - fsks-,Q 1.51, 'wi f-asks: 313-354 4 ,U 'bu-1 ff x , K n W'i. C975 eq 5 Perhaps the most outstanding event in the school year is Homecoming. Every student looks forward to the gay festivities and the big game---and this year it was bigger and better than ever! Students began planning and plotting their floats in secret weeks before. Finally the day arrived and spirits were high, aroused by the big bonfire and rally the night before. A snake dance of students led the parade downtown, followed by the hand- some L. H. S. band and many, many floats. Then came the dec- orated cars and, last but not least, the yellow buick convertible for the queens. As the parade advanced to the square, the eager crowd pushed forward. The Student Council president acted as master of cere- monies at the program which took place on the courthouse steps. Among the speakers who wished the football team victory, were former coach, Mr. John K. Lonborg, former football star, Sam Clevenger, former Homecoming Queen, Marie Crouch, and Coach Dave Ashley. The 3rd place trophy for floats was given to the senior class, Znd place to the juniors, and the cherished lst prize went to the seventh grade. Following the awards for the winning floats, the cheerleaders presented good luck charms to the team. Then came the moment everyone waited for---the crown- ing of the three girls who were the football squad's choice for the Homecoming Queens of l95O!! Second attendant--Miss Jo Collins, crowned by football player Ray Brittong first attendant-- Miss Patsy Schutty, crowned by co-captain Glen Johnson, Home- coming Queen--Miss Kay Carr, crowned by co-captain, Leon Miller--to reign over the big game and dance. The mighty Bluejays met their deadly foe, the Excelsior Springs Tigers, with determination and the hope of regaining the prized dualing pistols. Yet after out playing the Tigers, we lost a heartbreaking game by the slim margin of one touchdown. The score was 13-7, Excelsior's favor. Following the game, the students attended the annual Home- coming dance in a beautifully decorated gym. The many couples danced to the music of the William Jewell college band. During the intermission the Homecoming Queen and her attendants took their places of honor on the decorated platform at one end of the gym while J. Sherwood sang a beautiful melody dedicated to the royal ladies. Thus ended another memorable Homecoming in the lives of the L. H. S. students. .X-Ja.. -:IW LIBERTY TRUCK AND TRACTOR COMPANY ZA' 1397954 5 ff v Q' A T X 1 S . 3 X206 x 2-Y Q GY 366 v 69,60 ge wi Q35 be W Q A V Z D09 W The Crownlng Znd Plac e Juluors .WW V ,gfgbggzmlg Aug, if '1'f'K3f-0142 - -44 iw, e mmwm 7 ,, . ,,,. . The couples danced to the music of the Larry Phillips orchestra from Independence under a beautifully decorated false ceil- ing of red and white crepe paper. During the intermission the master of ceremonies announced the lucky winner of the large box of candy which was raffled off. Then came the main event of the evening, the announcement of Popularity King and Queen and their attendants. The choosing of these boys and girls took place the previous day in a student body election. The second attendants to the king and queen were announced first and took their place near the platform for the royal couple. They were Suzie Pence and Dave Clark. The first attendants were then announced and took their place. They were Martha Yancey and Phil Miller. The tiny crown bearer, Miss Marsha Lowman, presented the attendants with their crowns. Following these presentations, J. Sherwood sang lf while the audience eagerly awaited the an- nouncement of the king and queen. After this short program a sealed envelope was given to the master of ceremonies from which he read the names of Jo Collins and Bill Crouch, King andV'Queen of Hearts. J. then sang Let Me Call You Sweetheart as the royal couple came forward to the place of honor. Upon be- ing crowned, flowers were presented to the king and queen and the attendants, and the royal party reigned over the beautiful dance for the remainder of the evening. David Ashley, Jr. The boys workedhard in twice a day practices until school started. In the opening game against Smithville, Dwayne-Bell broke for 65 yards and a T.D. on the second play of the game. We won our first game 2.0 to 0. However, in the next game against a big tough line the Bluejays lost a good game in the second half, Z4 to O. Carrolton's long passes to their 6'5 and 6'7 ends made the important touchdowns. In the third game, played at home with Lexington, we made three errors in the third half, each one resulting in long touchdowns for the Minutemen. The second half was played in mid-field with our Bluejays playing good football. The final score was Zlfto 0, Lexington. The next week we took on big North Kansas City on the Wm. Jewell field and outplayed them for three quarters until their experience and size wore the Bluejays down enough to enable them to score twice. After this great game the boys had a relapse--losing to Slater, 13 to 0 and then to Richmond 2.7 to 7. Then the Bluejays began to click as a team. They took on the powerful undefeated Excelsior Springs Tigers and scored the first time they got the ball. They out fought and outplayed the Tigers until mid -way in the fourth quarter when they fumbled deep in their own territory with Excelsior re- covering. Three off side penalties gave Excelsior a T.D. tying up the ballgame. The Bluejays roared down the field 5 and 7 yards a clip, going for that winning touchdown. How- ever, a flat pass went astray and in seconds an alert Tiger halfback had dashed all the way with the intercepted pass, for another T.D. The gun stopped the Bluejays just short of the tying T.D. The Bluejays displayed championship form throughout, the game and upset the mightyHigginsville eleven for their only conference loss. The Liberty team was great, their blocking and tackling vicious, The half ended O to 0. In the third ql13.1 C61'Ted Bell, makinga spectacular steal from the Corn- husker safety, scored on a long pass from Phil Miller, then in the fourth quarter alert, aggressive, Joe Dirks, tackle, grabbed a Higginsville fumble and cove red by the entire te am raced fifty-five yards to score the cinching T.D. Making allong trip to the roost of the Marshall Owls--the Bluejays, through starting out good, were subdued by the fierce Owls, and senthome on the short end ofa 2.0 to 7 score. The final game of the seas on found the Liberty boys playing good football again, but without the .se rvices of Glenn Johns on and Ted Bell, they were badly mauled and clawed by the red- hot Cameron Tigers, 41 to 7. He re we would like to say that the little known B Team, composed mostly ofsophomores, showed great improvement during the 1950 season. They won 4 games, tied 1, and lost 3, ending their season with a Z0 to O win over Cameron,a previously undefeated B team. The Bluejays meeting Redemporists of Kansas City and Odessa. We were defeated both times. The following week we started a string of nonconference games to get in conditionfor the conference tilt. The scores of these games were as follows: North Kansas City 46, Liberty 273 Northeast 64, Liberty 27g Liberty 41, Lee's Summit 383 Raytown 45, Liberty 32. Next came the second tournament of the year, the games being played at North Kansas City. We met Rockhurst and Lillis of Kansas City, being the under dog because of lack of hustling and passing. Cameron, the last game before the conference string left a bad taste in the mouths of the basketball fans as well as the players by defeating the Jays 44-36 in the last half. Due to an expected relapse of a hard played Cameron game the Blue team lost their first conference tilt to Lexington by a 51-33 score. The Monsters of Excelsior seemed to score at will to edge ahead in the second half with a final score of Excelsior 58, Liberty 33. The following week showed that the boys had it in them by winning the next seven games straight. Included in these games were three games played in the Lathrop tourney. The first game was played with Platsburg and found Liberty with a 3 point lead in the last seconds of the game, the final score reading 41 to 38. The following night a highly tauted Gower team found the Bluejays had what it took by being taken by one point in the lapsing seconds of the game 45 to 44. The outcome of this game found Liberty clashing with St. Joe Pickett for champion- ship. Well for those who dare to remember, the Pickett team was expectinga hard game since the Gower team, defeated by Liberty, was slated to win the tournament. The game went fast and normally up to the last 4 minutes of the 4th quarter, then Liberty began to slip behind, but never more than three points. The game went nip and tuck up to the last 2 seconds when Pickett ahead by l point and as a result of free throws let Brandom slip through the defense and shoot at spectacular shot from the side, cinching the championship. Smithville, wno took 4th in the Lathro tournament, bowed to a sparked up Liberty five to slowly fiall behind to a 41 to 32 defeat. Slater, Lexington, and Richrnond fell easy conference foes to add to a seven game winning streak for the Jays-. Two heartbreakers added their bit to the seasons thrill with the Bluejays being defeated by Carrollton and Marshall by one point in two consecutive games. A championship William Chrisman team scored at will on the Jewell court to mark Liberty up on their list of wins. Final score Chrisman 44, Liberty 27. Cameron, who since their first encounter with the Bluejays mad won second place in the Kirksville tournament was defeated in the best played game of the season b a score of 53 to 49. In this game all five boys worked together with fast passing, accurate shooting and ball handling. A meager crowd saw a better Liberty team beaten by Higginsville on Higginsville's own freak court. As the official season came to a close Liberty markedtwo games over to the loss side by bowing again to a superior, ast North Kansas City, and again to the timber-toppers of Excelsior Springs. However, as the spectators noticed it was not because of superior ball playing ability, but lack of a type defence that midgets must play against giants The following week found Liberty defeating the Carrollton Trojans in the Warrensburg Regional Tournament but being defeated by Sedalia and Clinton thus finishing in 4th place This year the B team again won many honors and came out 2nd in their conference Congratulations to the entire basketball squad and our capable coach Kenneth Cokelv who all worked hard for a successful season Best Wishes from BANDY MOTORS I J , 14-4.35 .Y.',:, .: ll ,S C nf 7 :S , Ld ' of ft te 3 ,n 3 re E 13 I so I 11' E l ry 5 :S at 3 I .e l re 1 Le l is ' L- rn DY 1 st I :n 1. an 2 et, i at io - rp as 11 11 1 I an 1 al , 2 I IS fd 1 In I 1, I JY vo 7: of ts Je an 18 ie -e 10 DRS . From morning till night running, jumping, and vaulting become the common pastime. The track squad of 5O was successful in most cases, winding up their season with a second place in the annual conference track meet in which they were edged out by Excelsior Springs by one quarter of a point. Prospects for a championship squad for 51 are not too promising with only five letter men from last year returning plus the new crop of athletes coming up from the lower grades. So far about eighty boys have turned out. The inter-class track meet to be held some time in lvlarch will de- termine to a certain extent the potentialites of the future track squad of Liberty High School. We hope when this comes out in print that L. H. S. will come through, as they always do, with a track team of champions. Best Wishes for a happy future--- FLOWER SHOP X Q-M -'lg Jf a x 1-., X4 is 5-.
