R. Brock, our faithful superintendent of Liberty's school system. Through these years he has constantly striven to make our school one of Missouri's best, and his positions in state associations of teaching provide ample testimony to his success. Indeed he has been loyal to the highest traditions of Liberty High School. His extensive cooperation with the student body, his cognizance of the vital role which its opinions and attitudes play in the drama of youth education, make us proud to here gratefully acknowledge the service of our superintendent, Mr. Raymond R. Brock. 6 9 Haif a f f ' gi., y .X ,iv , , ,Q p Q X ' W . f ' If f v PRINCIPAL Faculty members call him a neighborly Jim, students attract his willing attention with a cheery Mr, Painter, and in his frequent informal moods he's just plain Prof, Regardless of his title, however, all who work with him and for him appreciate the great extent to which his system of organization and general efficiency have aided the successful operation of our institution. It's not the school, but the principal of the thing. If there is truth as well as humor in that, the good ship Liberty High is truly privileged to have at its helm a friendly, sincere, genuinely likable man like James A. Painter. 7 fl r..z ,I f L ,f' ' ! JJJJJJJJ FACULTY .AQMPJ W -1 'E :J -.nm 4? WN Hughes McDonald Dry Good Store l7 7 WHO KOR WHAT, ARE THESE? Sprinkled liberally across this page Are wee little children, quite young in age. Jam-packed with laughter, loaded with wit United we stand--divided we sit. Several new postures we wou1dn't believe-- Shoes on our hands or both legs in a sleeve. Ears sticking sideways, mouths hanging open, Eyes sad and droopy--you'd think we were mopxn ! Yes, we were young once, just right to beguile 'With a sassy remark or big 'dimple' smile. But now we are seniors, weakened by age And strong in our minds we are wise ones, and sage And so, dear peruser, as you do your perusing Please remember, for us, that it's our book you re using! S. students were gay because, for the first time in the school s history, classes were to be let out to work on floats. Despite all the hustle and bustle, we managed to work up ten beautiful floats to indicate the forthcoming defeat of our ancient rivals, Excelsior Springs. At two o'clock, the parade got under way, lead by the student body in a snake dance to the square. There we were led in a few cheers. Then Jim Swinehart, master of ceremonies, got the program started. The queen of the day, chosen by the football boys, was June De Va1l,who with her attendants, Shirlee Pixlee and Charlene O'Dell, reigned supreme over the day's activities. June was crowned by Jim Bogart, a co-captian. Shirlee was crowned by Paul Kelley, the other co-captain, and Charlene by Bill Coali- ley. The traditional four-leaf clovers were given to the members of the squad by the cheerleaders, and peptalks were given by Charlie Myers, Joe Amery, John Lonborg, and Coach Eskridge. That evening, a powerful Tiger squad rolled over the Bluejays by a score of 46 to O, the same score by which we were defeated the year before. The dueling pistols remained in possession of Excelsior Springs, and revenge was sworn for next year by the Bluejays. A dance was held in the gym, following the game, to the music of an im- ported orchestra. The gym was decorated bythe Student Council, which spon- sored the dance. And so ended the homecoming celebrations of 1948. te ' K ai Q if f mg- f , I '1 an N-1..5 'tA'w:f trv' -if ff' . . ,.',-'7!'?4f- 4 . ,- f , n - .5 ff 1 2,54 fp '52- k..lTfV' f. I I 5 X -.K .K I ' FGGTBALL 'LI 8 At the close of the 1948-49 football season, loyal supporters of the Bluejays agreed that we had quite a successful season. The Jays finished fourth in the conference play with three wins, three losses and one tie. After winning the initial scrimmage of the year from Platte City, we lost our first conference tilt -to Carrollton by a score of Z0-0. which we felt sure was due to lack of experience on the part of the Liberty eleven. The second conference game was with Lexington on the local field, which ended with the Bluejays in the lead with a score of Z0-l3. The North Kansas City Hornets, an age-old enemy, were next on the roster. Though outplayed in every department by the Jays, a fact agreed upon by the fans, The Hornets capitalized on a fumble anda pass to win the game in the final thirty seconds, 6-0. The Slater Wildcats were a rough and tough team whojourneyed ninety miles to secure a conference win, 33-O. The next game was with the Richmond Spartans, who were overcome with ease for another conference victory to the tune of Z0-0. This was the Spartans' homecoming game. October 22,1948 will long remain a sad memory for L.H.S., for on this, our homecoming day, the Excelsior Springs high school team, undefeated for two seasons, came out on the top side of a 46-0 score, the same score by which they defeated us the year before. Apparently invigorated by their defeat, the Jays wreaked their vengeance on a weak Higginsville team by a margin of twenty-six points, 32.-6. It was at this point that Coach Eskridge switched the team from a T formation to a single wing for the last two games of the season. The Jays journeyed to Marshall, but were weakened by the loss of our quarterback, Jim Williams, who broke his wrist. This game ended in a tie 6-6. The last game of the season, anon-conference encounter, was at Cam- eron, where the Dragons defeated the Jays by a score of 6-0. Liberty placed no one on the all-conference first team. Jim Bogart made the second team, and Paul Kelley, Jim Williams, and Bob Harrison received honorable mention. PROGRESSIVE SHOE SHOP 68 . Bluejay's hada moderately successful season this year, winning four games of twenty-one starts. In the William Jewell Invitational Tournament, we were edged out by Hogan of Kansas City, 32-31. At the Smithville tournament, we were defeated by Platte City and Smithville, but triumph- ed over Gower by a score of 45-28. Next came Raytown, who took the place of Lee's Summit in a schedule mixup, and bare- ly squeezed us out by a score of 33-31. In our second clash with Smithville, they againwere the victors by a score of 36-28. The next seven games were lost, by narrow margins, to Independance, Cameron, Lexington Qtwo gamesl, Excelsior Springs, North Kansas City, and Slater. During all this time, the janitors of L. H. S. had been laid off because the beards of our team were sweeping the floor. Each member of the team had vowed not to shave until we won a game. At last, the great day ar- rived. January 28 we encountered Richmond on the local court and overshadowed her by a score of 38-36. The next three games, with Carrollton, Marshall, and Cameron, were lost, but February ll at Higginsville we emerged victorious once again by a score of 35-32. North Kansas Citywas next on the roster, and again we were defeated by a score of 36- 26. The following Friday our old blood rivals, Excelsior Springs, were swamped 32-24 when they visited here. Our final loss was to Platte City in the sub-regional tournament at William Jewell College. Meanwhile, the B team was making a clean sweep of the opposition, winning ten out of sixteeniof their games and first place in the conference. This year's honorary captain, chosen at the end of the season by the squad, was Sam Clevenger. GAME SUMMARIES TEAM HA..
