Ubiquitous is the word that really tells her story, As the omnipresent carrier, she wrote her name in glory. Too late to join the fleet that came to stay , She missed the surrender at Tokyo Bay. Peacetime brought about a period of re-newed unrest, With the LEYTE joining her sisters among the SIXTH FLEET'S best Hostilities in Korea found the LEYTE in the Med, Orders to WestPac brought steaming Full Ahead. . Fro-m the deck of the LEADING LEYTE, CAG-3 launched their loads Disrupting enemy movementsg denying them use of their roads. The only carrier in Korea, where a Medal of Honor was won, By LT. George Hudner, this gallant deed was done. Reward for her action was a Presidential Unit Citation Awarded by the President of a most grateful nation. Now back to Rhode Island and then the SIXTH FLEET, For she still had her commitments with NATO to meet. The obsolescence of jeep carriers in late fifty-three, Brought about LEYTE'S conversion for war under the sea. Unfriendly buildeup in subs meant setting up- a barrier To man it, the Navy selected their very best carrier. An explosion in Boston killed thirty-nine of her crew, A sad setback, indeed, then work started anew. Meeting all commitments, displaying zeal and zest She typified the Can-Do ship, among the Nav 's be t. y s She put in a lot more steaming than any ship of her class Whether 't b t 1 e ver ical envelopement, or pinging , for top Navy brass With th ' 'f ' ' e awarding of the coveted Navy E , she closed out a brilliant career She has set course for Valhallag man-of-warsman without peer. It is an ignominious end for this gallant gray ghost, However, when needed, she'll be there first with the most! y ED HOLDEN AKC
