The aircraft carrier U. S. S. LEYTE was named after the battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest sea battle in World War II. The carrier named in honor of this battle was built at Newport News, Virginia. Launched on 23 August, 1945, it was commissioned on ll April, 1946. On its shakedown cruise, the LEYTE started a globe-trotting tradition which was to stay with her through most of her sea-going career. The LEYTE made four Med', cruises during the years of 1947-50 in- cluding such ports as, Athens, Istanbul, Alexandria, Naples, Gibralter, Algiers, Tripoli, and Palerno. Word of the outbreak of Korean hostilities came while the ship was in Beirut, Lebanon, and an urgent dispatch was received indicating that her services were required in the Far East. Making the 18,500 mile run from Beirut to Japan through the Panama Canal at a record average of 23 knots, the LEYTE reported to Commander Seventh Fleet., and was sent into combat operations the next day.
