afudqaaaldall Under the able direction of a new men- tor, Earl lensen, the Minute Men enjoyed a bang-up season with only a very few letter- men reporting for duty early in September, the coaching staff and the football squad spent many long hard evening preparing for the first tussle of the year with the Cozad Haymakers. The first Friday in October found a large enthusiastic crowd anxiously awaiting to see the local boys in action. The Minute Men gave a very good account of them- selves in their first game by handing the Haymakers a l3-O defeat, The following week, the orange and black team was un- able to equal the fast McCook team sparked by the All State lerry Carpenter. For the third game on the schedule, which was the season's highlight, the Lex- ington populace moved west to see the hard- fighting Minute Men outplay North Platte on their own field. However, a neat pass by tied up the score. Their Stroud finally fighting vigor enhanced by this close score, The Minute Men met the Bearcats of Kear- ney on the local gridiron and succeeded in bringing home the pelts. Mid-season found the Minute Men throng traveling to Holdrege to taste defeat for the second time in the l940 season. With renewed determination and the de- sire to bolster up their self-confidence, the Minute Men won an impressive victory over Beaver City by pushing over four touch- downs and not allowing the Beavers to come anywhere near the double stripe. Due to the weather, the Cambridge Trojans forfeited their game to give the easiest victory of the season. Boosevelts Thanksgiving found the Minute Man camp being invaded by the Farmers of Curtis, but Coach lensen's eleven easily turned them back by a four touch- down margin. On the Republican Turkey Day, the Minute Men journeyed to Gothenburg for the last clash of the season. This game fou'nd five boys playing their last game for the Orange and Black, and it also brought out a kicking dual between two of the states best kickers, France doing the booting for the Minute Men, and Miller for the Swedes. la- cobson and Stuckey were on the receiving end of some 'nice passes hurled by Cullen. Senior tackle, Britton, intercepted a Swedish pass in the closing moments of the game running across the double stripe to chalk up the final score. The victory over the Swedes climaxed an exceptional season with six wins, one tie, and two defeats. The Minute Men scored 98 points to their opponents' 45.
