This period of learning and of moulding character is an important part of life. L, H. S. teaches students the worth of an education and gives them a sound foundation in various subjects. Moreover, the growth of character is emphasized. justice. integrity, and charity are taught through examples. The lessons that we have learned here-kindness, graciousness in our dealings with others. and devotion to our God, our country, and our school- are the signposts and guides that will make our later pathways through a fast-changing world less hazardous. ,g fl n' X ' if l . 4 f I , I H U . SHEAFFER leads a discussion of the War between the States in one of his history classes. With sincere appreciation we dedicate our Lora to Mr. Maurice C. Sheaffer, our friendly teacher and adviser. He has won the admiration of the faculty and of the students in his efforts to uphold the ideals of our school. In addition to his teaching assignment of history and social studies. he is an adviser of Student Council. After school he serves on the Curriculum Committee and the Activity Committee. Not only does he take an active part in his church, and in the welfare of young people in the community, but also he is greatly interested in music and in literature. The students of Mr. Sheaffers classes deeply appreciate his interest in them and in their prob- lems. His kind words of advice have aided many young people in making correct decisions. As a result of his efforts to help us, our high school life is made more enjoyable. The 1958 Lore pays tribute to Mr. Sheaffer for helping us along the L. H. S. Pathways of life. 3 WIITH PRIDE Mr. Sheaffer willingly takes the job of babysitting for his little granddaughter, Maureen Shealfer. SMILING HAPPILY Mr. Sheaffer sees his prized ring-necked pheasant fall to the ground. k,i ,fl s f MR MAURICE C SHEAFFER Diligentl we follow our inspiring MR RICHARD H BARTHOLOMEW B A M Ed Supermlendent of Public Schools Lewxstown Pennsylxama fx ov 'YY Ns... Assemblies broaden our education. '19 By providing educational entertainment, assemblies play an important part in our school. The various departments of the school presented programs in their respective fields. To interest the students in community projects, representatives of various branches of public service spoke in assemblies. Two special programs were the La Vaux Trio and a visual lecture of wild life. The Lafayette College Choir also gave a delightful presentation of sacred and secular music. Annually, the Student Council sponsors two assemblies in which the students have an opportunity to demonstrate their talents. IN THE ANNUAL INDUCTION assembly of the National Honor Society, four two-year members lead the candlelight ceremony. This year fifteen persons became new members. By banking each week under the School Savings Plan, students develop the idea of thrift that will be benehcial in the future. Good saving habits in junior High are Carried through in Senior High. Pupils consider banking to be very important because their school savings aid them in the many expenses of graduation as well as for college. Their win was very impressive and stamped them as the football power of Central Pennsylvania. Lewistown came up with a new quarterback in Audice Rodkey and the defensive unit showed strength in stop- ping the Sunbury offense. LEWISTOWN 34-BELLEFONTE 0 Lewistown's second win was a thrilling encounter with the Red Raiders of Bellefonte. Lewistown proved its superiority with fine blocking and superb ball handling. .Xgain the Panthers' defensive line was impregnable. LEWISTOWN 13-TYRONE 7 Our highly tired-up team handed a top-rated Tyrone squad a shocking loss. They had a man-sized job to do, said Coach Alex Cfema. and they did it. junior Powell, the leading ground-gainer of the game, brought the capacity crowd to their feet by scampering off tackle for 89 yards and a Lewistown touchdown. Powell added the extra point. The Panthers added the second and deciding tally shortly afterwards. After two long gains and a pass, jeff Brown scooted off tackle 36 yards to the touchdown. Powell missed the extra point. Tyrone's only score was made by Robbie Yanneman. who scored after carrying the ball four straight times. The win was attributed to an all-out-team effort. LEWISTOWN 39-CAPTAIN JACK 0 The winless Trojans of Captain jack proved to be inferior opponents of the much-feared Panthers 'of Lewistown. Three Lewistown offensive units saw action. The Little Lions succumbed to the astounding speed and power of a great Lewistown squad. They proved to be no match for the Panthers. LEWISTOWN 14-LOCK HAVEN 0 .-Xfter a weeks layoff because a game was cancelled during the Hu epidemic, the Lewistown machine invaded Lock Haven, where a tremendous defensive battle took place. Hard tackling on defense by both teams was a topic of conversation. Gil Yarner and Fred Stoicheff scored touchdowns while jack Searer and Dick Ruble stood out on defense. LEWISTOWN 41-CHIEF LOGAN 0 Lewistown invaded the tepee of Chief Logan and tramped over its warriors to the tune of six touchdowns. Gary Sprout and Fred Stoicheff led the way as the Panthers stampeded the almost helpless Mingos. Chief Logan never threatened. LEWISTOWN 45-SCOTLAND 0 Since Danville cancelled its game with the Panthers. Scotland School was contacted and scheduled for that date. That team was no match for the steam-rolling Panthers. LEWISTOWN 38-HUNTINGDON 6 Arch-rival Huntingdon came to Mitchell Field with spirits high and a banner crowd. Their hopes were shattered when Gary Sprout cut loose with a 30-yard sprint for the first touchdown. Fine running and block- ing by the Panthers enabled them to run up a sizable score. Cnbelievable pass catching by jack Searer was the highlight of the game. The Bearcats scored only in the last play on a pass from Peightal to Kidd. I W S.
