DR. CALVIN V. ERDLY B.S., M.S., Pd.D. Superintendent ot Public Schools Lewistown, Pennsylvania DH. EHIJLY In this period of emergency when millions of men are in armed conflict, and other millions prepare the arms, a renewed emphasis is placed upon education. An ever greater demand is made for better educated citizens. Time decrees that you will be making your greatest con- tribution to post-war developments. The preparation for your responsibilities must be double. The desired success after school will rest on how ready you are to make an honest living, and whether you know how to live. The lack of either will manifest itself in the things you do and the way you act as citizens. X Give yourselves fully to patriotic American privilege. faithful respect tor God, and happy home contentment. May all ot you, Class of '44, share abundantly in success. l Dr. C. V. Erdly

ffwfx ,u,,z' Doc , as Mr. Swetek is known to all, has taught in L. H. S. for the past ten years, during which time he has be- come practically an institution . The nickname, Doc , came from his first aid treatments of all ailments in athletics. I-n his patchwork coat he would dash upon the field or court to administer first aid to his boys. No football game would be complete without one such trip. He has been a member of the old school which believed in the adage, Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child. Whenever his pupils became ob- streperous, he would use his Board of Education, to pacify them. As a teacher of Physical Education or trainer for athletic teams, Doc was strict and merciless, but all who leave his classes agree that his corrective exercises have helped them. In all kinds of weather, boys could be seen traveling the long journey around the building on the double under his watchful eye. With an excellent sense of humor and a friendliness which included all, Doc has won the admiration of everyone. In local affairs Doc was also prominent, finding time from his school work to serve here also. As civilian volunteer. he had charge of the night shift of the Aircraft Warning Service, and taught First Aid in the local Civilian Defense. Now, however, Doc is serving in an even greater ca- pacity-a seaman in the Navy. We all miss him and join together in wishing him great success and all the luck in the world.
