lllilflllll-lTIIl To Mr. lack Swetek, for his genuine interest in youth, for his spirit and cooperation, for his service to our school and our country, and for just being himself, we, the Senior class, gratefully dedicate this l944 Lore. Mr. Swetek came to us from West Newton, Pa. He grad- uated from Avalon High School and Slippery Rock State Teachers' College where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Science. While in high school he played football, and in college he acted as trainer of his team. In 1934, Mr. Swetek came to Lewistown High where he taught Health and Physical Education. Here, too, he acted as trainer of athletic teams, until October 28, 1943. At this time he left Lewistown to enter the service of his country. He is now lack E. Swetek, Pharma- cist's Mate 3rd class, United States Navy. We are sure that he will do his new job just as faithfully as his old and that he will return again to us in the near future.

ffwfx ,u,,z' Doc , as Mr. Swetek is known to all, has taught in L. H. S. for the past ten years, during which time he has be- come practically an institution . The nickname, Doc , came from his first aid treatments of all ailments in athletics. I-n his patchwork coat he would dash upon the field or court to administer first aid to his boys. No football game would be complete without one such trip. He has been a member of the old school which believed in the adage, Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child. Whenever his pupils became ob- streperous, he would use his Board of Education, to pacify them. As a teacher of Physical Education or trainer for athletic teams, Doc was strict and merciless, but all who leave his classes agree that his corrective exercises have helped them. In all kinds of weather, boys could be seen traveling the long journey around the building on the double under his watchful eye. With an excellent sense of humor and a friendliness which included all, Doc has won the admiration of everyone. In local affairs Doc was also prominent, finding time from his school work to serve here also. As civilian volunteer. he had charge of the night shift of the Aircraft Warning Service, and taught First Aid in the local Civilian Defense. Now, however, Doc is serving in an even greater ca- pacity-a seaman in the Navy. We all miss him and join together in wishing him great success and all the luck in the world.
