HM W . fd-W' ffQ4,,fJ ja ff, W ' ' ' ' , X V N J Q LHS PUHEWUHIJ To leave you with an idea of the activities of our school is the aim of the Lore Staff in producing this book. The students of Lewis- town High School, as real war workers on the home front, are zealously buying and selling war stamps, are willingly participating in all scrap drives, and are cheerfully accepting the shortened lunch period, in an effort to help bring this war to a victorious close. They have proudly given many boys to Uncle Sam's forces and are eagerly getting more ready for the task which lies ahead. May the contents of this book give those students renewed strength and courage as they step forward to serve their country. Tl-115' A X x X N --us-Q55 WE SERVE lllilflllll-lTIIl To Mr. lack Swetek, for his genuine interest in youth, for his spirit and cooperation, for his service to our school and our country, and for just being himself, we, the Senior class, gratefully dedicate this l944 Lore. Mr. Swetek came to us from West Newton, Pa. He grad- uated from Avalon High School and Slippery Rock State Teachers' College where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Science. While in high school he played football, and in college he acted as trainer of his team. In 1934, Mr. Swetek came to Lewistown High where he taught Health and Physical Education. Here, too, he acted as trainer of athletic teams, until October 28, 1943. At this time he left Lewistown to enter the service of his country. He is now lack E. Swetek, Pharma- cist's Mate 3rd class, United States Navy. We are sure that he will do his new job just as faithfully as his old and that he will return again to us in the near future. ffwfx ,u,,z' Doc , as Mr. Swetek is known to all, has taught in L. H. S. for the past ten years, during which time he has be- come practically an institution . The nickname, Doc , came from his first aid treatments of all ailments in athletics. I-n his patchwork coat he would dash upon the field or court to administer first aid to his boys. No football game would be complete without one such trip. He has been a member of the old school which believed in the adage, Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child. Whenever his pupils became ob- streperous, he would use his Board of Education, to pacify them. As a teacher of Physical Education or trainer for athletic teams, Doc was strict and merciless, but all who leave his classes agree that his corrective exercises have helped them. In all kinds of weather, boys could be seen traveling the long journey around the building on the double under his watchful eye. With an excellent sense of humor and a friendliness which included all, Doc has won the admiration of everyone. In local affairs Doc was also prominent, finding time from his school work to serve here also. As civilian volunteer. he had charge of the night shift of the Aircraft Warning Service, and taught First Aid in the local Civilian Defense. Now, however, Doc is serving in an even greater ca- pacity-a seaman in the Navy. We all miss him and join together in wishing him great success and all the luck in the world. DR. CALVIN V. ERDLY B.S., M.S., Pd.D. Superintendent ot Public Schools Lewistown, Pennsylvania DH. EHIJLY In this period of emergency when millions of men are in armed conflict, and other millions prepare the arms, a renewed emphasis is placed upon education. An ever greater demand is made for better educated citizens. Time decrees that you will be making your greatest con- tribution to post-war developments. The preparation for your responsibilities must be double. The desired success after school will rest on how ready you are to make an honest living, and whether you know how to live. The lack of either will manifest itself in the things you do and the way you act as citizens. X Give yourselves fully to patriotic American privilege. faithful respect tor God, and happy home contentment. May all ot you, Class of '44, share abundantly in success. l Dr. C. V. Erdly MR. Is the vice-principal of L. H. S. who has done outstanding work in her field and who never tires of it. We can always remember her in helping us to place our future on a firm foundation. We, the Seniors of Lewistown High School, wish to ex- press our gratitude and sincere thanks to our faculty. We thank them for the excellent leadership and helpful guidance they have shown us during our days in old L. H. S., tor carry- ing on their good work under the trying conditions of today. and most of all for preparing us so that We will be better fitted for the new world into which we will soon be entering. In spite of the rapidly changing times and piesent world situa- tion, we feel that our faculty has done an exceptional job in keeping up with and putting into practice the more modern means of instruction. Only now as we are about to graduate and as we look back over the past years, do we fully appreciate how much our faculty has done for us. To those of our faculty who have left L. H. S. to go to the defense of our country, we extend our warmest thanks. We deeply regret that we could not have them with us during this our last year, but we feel sure that they will return to take up their work where they left off. We hope that the faculty ot old L. H. S. will continue its good work so that the future graduating classes may have the same oportunities and privileges that we have enjoyed. Donald Biden i if ,gf 5 ,P 1 V' . KM Y SE IUH5 RICHARD KEISER PEGGY DAVIS September 7, 1941. we, the class of 44' , hopefully entered upon our high school ca- reer. We elected the following class officers: Persident, George Davidson, Vice President, Peggy Davis, Secretary, Shirley Yarnellp Treasurer, Kenneth Stewart. Our class ad- visors were Miss Park, Mr. Smith, and Mr. Snyder. We immediately began planning the big event of our Sophomore year--the Sophomore class party, which was quite a success. Throughout the year members of our class participated in the various sports and clubs of the school. September, 1942, we reassembled to be- gin the second epoch of our high school CLASS career. Then well acquainted after a year in the Senior department, we lost no time in reorganizing our class. The following class officers were elected: President, Robert Watson: Vice President, Peggy Davis: Secre- tary, Shirley Yarnellp Treasurer, George Davidson. Early in the year our president left us to join the Coast Guard, and our vice president assumed his duties. We se- lected navy blue and white for our class colors. A class meeting was held, and we began looking forward to receiving class rings, hats, and pennants, all of which were soon received and displayed about the IOYCE WERTZ ,KENNETH BARBER campus. Everyone worked hard preparing for the climax of our Iunior year, the Iunior prom. We all felt our efforts were well ref warded as we entered the beautifully dec- orated gym. As a class, we were very active in the affairs of the community. Our class set the record for many salvage collections and also for the selling of war stamps at school. We resolved to continue these records. On September 7, l943, we began the last epoch of our high school career. The fol- lowing class officers were elected: Presi- dent, Richard Reiserg Vice President, Peggy Davis: Secretary, Ioyce Wertzp Treasurer, Kenneth Barber. Mr. Hufford took the place of our class advisor, Mr. Snyder, who left us to join the Navy. We now began looking forward to our privileges as Seniors. We elected our Lore Staff, which began func- tioning immediately. We produced our class play, Kathleen , which was quite. a success. Then came our big events-Senior Day, the Prom, Commencement, and the Senior Dinner Dance. The memories of these great days will never be forgotten, and now it is with a feeling of regret, but also great pride, that we leave old L. H. S. Peggy and Dick lAMES K. UNDER Q S IILASSMEN 4 2 6 EL 55 UF '45 We, the future Seniors of 1945, first en- tered the Freshman class in 1942, ready and eager to start the four years with a bang. We elected our officers as follows: Presi- dent, Iay Shenkp Vice President, Betty Lou Ross, Treasurer, Harry Stameyg and Secre- tary, Lois Boring. The most important event this year was our operetta: The Beaver Trail . X Still a little uneasy, we entered the por- tals of the Senior building and immediately elected our officers: President, Iay Shenkp Vice President, Ieanne Billman: Treasurer, Robert Steltzerg and Secretary, Barbara Io Heck. The big event of this year was the success of our Class Party held in the gymnasium. . In our junior year we once more chose our leaders: Acting President, Ieanne Billl- manp Treasurer, Iay Shenkg and Secretary, Delores Crago. Early in November we or- dered class rings and pins, followed by hats, emblems, and pennants of green and white. Of course, the big event of this year was the Iunior Prom. Everyone was busy with plans for this gala eve-ning. We had promised the Seniors the biggest and best prom ever held in Lewistown, and we sin- cerely hope that our promise was fulfilled. Patsy Billman nz: M an fx 'hw ' 2, 1 CLASS UF '46 As seventh-graders, we, the class of '46, started out 205 strong, looking forward to the coming years in Iunior High. In seventh grade the idea of learning schedules and of getting acquainted with new teachers and students seemed very mystitying, but after a few weeks of interest- ing experiences, we had no trouble in find- ing our way around. Then we were officially considered members of Iunior High. The following year as eight graders, we were a year older and more sure of our- selves. The main event of the year was the election of class officers who were as follows: President, Neil Seibertg Vice Presi- dent, Delores Arnoldp ' Secretary, Isabel Clark, Treasurer, Donald Amig. At last our long awaited time arrived, bringing with it the realization of our hopes to be upperclassmen. Again, we selected officers who were: President, lack Miller, Vice President, Geneva Gross: Secretary, Zola Robinson, Treasurer, Marvin Peters. We were -no longer considered little , but we were looked up to. After much consideration The Outlaw King was selected as our operetta, which proved to be a big success. Entering Senior High as Sophomores, we again had to adapt ourselves to our new surroundings. Our class was very active, participatingin many of the extra-curricular activities. The main event of our Sophomore year was the class party. At the close of the year we were somewhat adapted to our new life , and we were eagerly looking forward to our Iunior year. Students and parents have found the school pcrper interesting cmd enjoyable. The staff has cooperated with one another, and with the help of the advisors, Miss Esther Cressmcm, Mr. Luther Scott, and Mr. Ecirl McMillen, has had cr very successful school paper. To all alumni, who cxre in the Army, Nctvy, cmd Marines, the school has sent, every two weeks, a copy of the Maroon and Steel. Letters from these boys show their appreciation and grcxtefulness. When the Seniors leave this year, they will carry with them the many comical and serious experiences connected with producing this paper. Yes, the Maroon and Steel will linger long in the hearts of the class of 44 . TID AL PURE SIE LE!-lli E g X . s x Today, in a nation of free people at War, from the President of the United States down to the high school students, the value of freedom of speech is being recognized as never before. Consequently. the importance ot training which produces intelligible, effective, fearless speakers is conceded in civilian life and in the armed forces. Moreover, as we look ahead to the peace which will follow this war, we see the value speech training will have in gaining and maintaining this peace. Free men and women must be able to express themselves adequately if they are to gain the most from the freedom they have won. Therefore, We are proud that we have in our school a chapter of the National Forensic League, a national speech organization which encourages free thinking and free speech among a free people. Through the work that this organization is doing, students of Lewis- town High School are helping in the war effort and are preparing themselves to take an active place in a free world-the kind of world for which we are fighting. George Gardner fx! BANKERS' HUUHS ' f P TUBE F!-lll EHS UF MEHIEI-l The Agricultural boys have been busy the past year working their projects. These projects have been successful, and the scope has been extended. During the school year the boys husked corn, picked stringbeans, sold many garden seeds, bought many war stamps, and had successful F. F. A. parties and meetings. They also went on valuable tours and field trips. All these activities tend to lead toward a united war effort and an industrious 1943-44. Several of the Agricultural boys have given up their Agricultural aims and have entered the armed forces until after the war. In all the activities the boys gave their utmost thought and care toward the Fight for Freedom. GLEE GIRLS' GLEE CLUB A few weeks after the Class of 44 entered Senior High the Girls' Glee Club was organized. There were a lot of girls who participated in this club. During the Sophomore year, the club was under the direction of Mr. Smiley until he went to serve his country. Then Mr. Koch took charge of the girls. In the Iunior and Senior years, the club Was directed by Miss Wentz. The girls were requested to sing in assembly several times which they did very successfully. The club sang the different songs of the forces of the United States to keep up the morale , I know that this weekly meeting singing together will live in our memories forever. III. BS BOYS' GLEE CLUB The Boys' Glee Club, composed of Sophomores, Iuniors, and Seniors, is serving its country and its school in various ways. Under the able supervision of Miss Mildred Wentz, the club has taken part in many assembly programs, it has appeared before many of the social organizations of town, and it has sung over W.M.R.F. Because of the valuable instruction received in this organization during their time spent in high school, many of the former members of the club are now singing in the Glee Clubs of the various camps. As the members sing the military songs, which are the favorites of all the boys, they remind these former members that Lewistown High School is doing its part by serving on the home front. Charles Huey if X' 2 BAD The Lewistown High School Ba-nd, under the direction of Mr. Palmer Mitchell, assistant Mr. Ernest Koch and student leader Thomas Scott, has been very active this year in serving on the home front. It has presented numerous concerts and has accompanied the boys Who were leaving for the armed forces to the station. There the band played a half-hour concert as a send-off. The band has boosted war stamp and bond sales by- presenting a concert for that purpose. It has taken an active part in the football games. In all of these activities, the members have given whole- heartedly of their time and effort in order to present these programs. and they hope that in this way they, too, have done their part. The Music War Council of America has awarded the band a special citation for their excellent Work in promoting the war effort. Frosta Mary Arseniu IIHCHESTHI-l The Senior Department Orchestra, under the leadership of Professor Palmer Mitchell, Prof as he is better known, has served our school successfully this year. First in importance is its faithfulness to our assembly programs. It has contributed much to make these programs a success. Next, it has taken an active part in school activities, such as plays, operettas, and radio programs. Many individual groups of the orchestra have played in assem- blies. These groups consisted of a brass choir, a saxophone sextet, a clarinet choir, and a mixed group from the different sections of the orchestra. Frosta Arseniu, the student director, has done a very fine job of filling in when Professor Mitchell could not be present. This year, as every year, there are a large number of seniors leav- ing the orchestra. If this organization in the future years does as well as it did this year, Lewistown High School will always have a magnificent orchestra. In a local, state, and national poster contest, sponsored by the United Commercial Travelers, a great number of members from the Art Department participated. In the state-Wide contest. two Lewistown seniors won second and third prizes, and in the national contest one of our seniors won second prize. During the Christmas season, we were pleasantly surprised by the fes- tive appearance of our school, accom- plished by the efforts of our faculty members. Two seniors also painted a frieze portraying an old-fashioned Christmas scene. This frieze was banked on either side by lighted trees and surrounded by festoons of ever- greens. Each year the department presents an assembly program. This year it illustrated how artists are serving America in the war effort. We should all realize the importance of our Art Department, and the great contribution it is giving to the school and community. Ann Canedy The Art Department, under the su- IIPEHETT DANIEL BOONE In every school term there is one outstanding event, and for the freshman class it is the operetta. This year's production was Daniel Boone, written by Geoffrey F. Morgan and Samuel Richard Gaines. Its clever script and catchy melodies made it a mem- orable evening for th-e many patrons who attended. The success of the show is attributed tothe line spirit of co-operation which existed between the di- rectors and the cast. The dramatics were capably handled by Mrs. Iohn S. Neal, Ir., and the music was directed by Mrs. Iohn Hartzler, assisted by Mr. Ernest Koch, who led the orchestra: and Iean Young, who served as pianist. The dances were artistically staged under the care- ful supervision of Miss Charlotte Walker, while Mr. Harold B. Kilheffer was in charge of the scenery. The plot was laid in the stockade at Boonesbor- ough, Kentucky, in the year 1776. Daniel Boone Uay Riden, Ir.J and Richard Calla- way KGeorge Saylorl succeeded in making peace with Cornstalk Uohn Yocuml and his braves. The Indian chief volunteered to go as a hostage to Mount Pleasant with Flanders flames Lynchl. Several pio- neers, seeking revenge, killed Cornstalk, and the In- dians took to the warpath. Daniel's brother, Squire Boone CPaul Heckertl, brought news from Philadel- phia of the Declaration of Independence. In the meantime, the girls, Betsy Ueanne Pearsonl, Iemina tAudrey Ganoel, and Frances fPhyllis Shumakerl, decided to go lor a boat-ride on the river near the stockade. They were captured and held prisoners by the Indians. After much -anxiety on the part of the mothers, Mrs. Boone KBetty lane Dillingl and Mrs. Callaway fMargie Graharnl, the girls were rescued by their lovers, Samuel Henderson fLawrence Bun- kerl, Flanders Callaway flames Lynchl, and Iohn Holder Uohn Detwylerl. All ended well when Ezekiel Pogue fDean Clarkl persuaded Tabitha McSplinster fBetty Herbsterl to become his wife, theirs making the fourth couple. ' The leads were ably supported by the choruses, who appeared as pioneer women, settlers, and Indi- ans. Much credit is also due to Barbara Bradley, who so competently filled the position of prompter. Daniel Boone will surely rank high among the annual freshman productions. M N x ,gi 'L f L, A.. It helped them prepare for this world wide conflict. We truly have been fortunate in our physical training program. Our earliest training in school teaches us the true value of sports either as an active participant or an onlooker. It gives us stamina, both mental and physical, and we place a true value on physical and mental well-being. Sportsmanship in the United States is placed at a higher value than worldly goods. A green boy in his Freshman year, by his exercising, coaching, and training, is built into athletic material. By the same token we take an army ot green soldiers and build the greatest army the world has ever known. lt is only by training our boys tor sports in high school that we have the army material when we need it so badly. While our boys are fighting all over the globe, we in Lewistown High School have the same fighting spirit in all ol our sport meets. James O. Wian FUIJTBALI. The record for the football team was not as we had antici- pated, but we gained experience and prepared tor next year's season by using many underclassmen.-Despite a slow start, the Panther Eleven steadily improved to end the season with a commendable record. The coaches deserve a lot of credit for their long hours of coaching and drilling which appeared in vain for awhile. Then, starting with the Altoona game, the Panthers began to show improvement andwon the last three games. Lost to next year's team by graduation will be lim Charles, Booker Beckwith, Milky Goss, Swoon Abbott, Baldy Alig, Iamo Wian, Buzz ,Harpster, and Carl Vogt. These boysireally played football lor old L. H. and all of them will be missed next year. i Alden Amig Sept. Sept. Oct. Oct. Oct. Oct. Oct. Nov. Nov. Nov. FOOTBALL SCORES Y L.H.S. Opp. Selinsgrove H. The second half got under way with the Panthers win- ning their first two games of the League. The Panthers antici- pate bringing the eighth championship to L. H. S. The basketball team has established a very successful record so far this season by winning eleven games and losing six games. The team will miss six seniors next season. They are Iames Abbott, who we expect to be second or third in the Mountain League scoring, Iack Howell, the Panther that held Ulsh to 5 points in one gameg Louis Ughetto, that small but mighty substitute, Herbert Troupe, the player with wavy hairy Charles Beckwith, whose build is envied by all the girls, Wilson Harpster, the boy who is always bouncing all over the floor. These boys were aided in their success by Graham, Shenk, Wertz, Goodwin, Vaughn, Traxler, and Bratton. To Mr. Wike, the faithful coach of the L. H. S. The booters not only were undefeated in eight games, won five, and tied three, but also brought the Tri-County League championship to L. H. S. for the first time. During the entire season our team scored 13 goals and built a strong defense which held our oponents to a mere 3 the entire year. Much of the credit for the highly successful season must go to our new soccer coach, Mr. L. E. Baird, who, by his faith- ful efforts, developed the team into a championship bination. Lost to next year's team by graduation will be George Baird, Louis Ughetto, Bruce Wagner, Wallace Burkert, and lack Howell. The students of L. H. S., as Well as every other true American on the home front, are doing their part to further these Freedoms. The students of L. H. S. and the people of America are helping to finance the war by buying all the war bonds and stamps that they can. This makes it possible for our boys to go into battle free from the want of proper equipment. If our men in service have the equipment that they need to win battles, they go into battle unafraid. This is only one instance that indicates the de- sire oi the people to safeguard the Four Freedoms. When We leave old L. H. S., we are ready to begin our careers unafraid and confident. We have received an education, and we do not have to worry about, our futures because there are many oportunities for high school graduates at all times. We are indeed thankful that we live in a democracy where it IS so easy to secure a high school edu- catlon uf L, .I-45:9 ffm XJ if f if' Q :rp-pit X 'U . 3 'fx XY X - TC, :, 1 -A -,L 1 It I -1 Q . . x f! We can express our opinions by editorials in the Maroon and Steel, our high school newspaper. Through the Student Council We govern ourselves in school. The members of the Council are elected by the students, and they act ac- cording to the Wishes ot the students. We are also free to express our ideas in the classroom during discussions. The students ot L. H. S. are encouraged to make use of this freedom. One of the most cherished of all the free- doms is the Freedom of Religion. Here again the pupils of L H S are urged to enyoy rel1g1ous freedom The Tr1 H1 Y s and H1 Y s which are high school clubs organized on a religious basis, welcome members of all creeds. In L. H. S. there are no restrictions pertaining to religion. At the present time, We are engaged in the greatest of all wars. Regardless of the cost, We are going to win this war to pre- serve the Four Freedoms and everything else for which America stands.
