1954 cJlewis and C farL Ji er oCewiA and C furL J ialr .Scliooi .Spokane, Washington Twelfth Annual Edition Edited and Published by Staff Members From the Year ' s Graduating Class Adviser: CARL G. MILLER. Editorial and Business he Tiger staff presents herein The ' 54 Story. As you J. read further you will find the contents are a play- back, presented in such a way as to help you recall the important things and the good times of this school year. The directors of The ' 54 Story are the faculty members plus your student leaders. The seniors in a sense are the star actors. But the juniors, sophomores, and frosh made a wonderful supporting cast. This year ' s productions started way hack last September with classes, football games, pep cons, etc. Soon there were dances and school elections, followed by basketball season. May Day came and went, and then as a climax to the story was gradua- tion for the class of ' 54. It ' s been a successful year, and the members of the Tiger staff, as scriptwriters for The ' 54 Story, hope you will get much pleasure from this yearbook. As June drew near, the illustrious stars of The ' 54 Story made ready for their final appearance at Lewis and Clark . . . Baccalaureate and Graduation. Since these 400 made their debut as juvenile actors in Septem- ber, 1951, many activities and events have highlighted their careers. They have picked up polish in more ways than one. From Geraldine Acheson, who has been at Leiuis and Clark her entire four years, to a newcomer, Marilyn Zehring, who joined the group in September, 1953, the alphabet, the curriculum, and the activities schedule have been pretty thoroughly covered. Page nineteen T)L 1954 Story, Settinrj Page four Setting Page five Setting DirRrtinn My family ' W here you are, the school is Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar. All for L.C. Stand up and hollar! From the bottom of my heart . . I love every brick and stone in the building. You might as well relax, With every right goes a responsibility. Who was the main director of the ' 54 Story? It was none other than LC ' s principal. Abraham Lincoln Parker. With 12 years ' experience to help him, Mr. Parker worked with both faculty and students in developing what the Tiger staff calls the story of the school year. Printed around his picture are some of Mr. Parker ' s favorite expressions. Page teven Direction William W. Taylor, Location Manager As location manager for the 54 Story, Vice Principal William W. Taylor was responsi- ble for many details of the production. He supervised both student and faculty schedules. Working with the school ' s various units, Mr. Taylor helped the show to run more smoothly. Bernadine McClincy, Casting Director Acting in her usual capacity as girls ' advisor, Miss Bernadine McClincy was in a sense the casting director for the ' 54 Story. Her office had some of the functions of a central casting bureau. Almost every girl at LC, from the stars to the bit players, visited there sometime during the year to get information and counseling. Beginning in 1950, the bewildered freshman organized a get acquainted party, proving most successful. Later on in the semes- ter, the group combined their efforts into a con, The Play ' s the Thing. With a bit more experience, the students, now promoted to worthy sophomores, had a potluck supper thoroughly enjoyed by all. The Sock Hop, a date dance was sponsored in the junior year. Because the sopho- more potluck was such a success, the juniors held another similar activity. As with most classes, the senior year proved to be the most active of the high school career. With gaiety and zest, the seniors ate their third potluck dinner. Busy seniors were soon to be preparing for A Day in Television. This con not only brought entertainment to the entire student body but brought the class closer together. Befrains of Irish tunes were heard from the St. Patrick ' s Day Sing. The next big event to take place was the forever-talked-about Senior Prom, held at the Spokane Hotel on May 29. After this beauti- ful memory came Baccalaureate ceremonies and a gala class picnic. Concluding these fine four years, the ceremony of graduation took place on the 31st of May. Many members of the class arc serious about a class reunion to be held in 1959. Page forty -eight These junior home room presidents represent the spirit of the classes. Wj V - he school year of ' 53 to ' 54 saw a bigger enrollment J. for LC than the old school had known for many years. Over 2000 students registered for a high school education. This throng was organized by Veep Taylor into sixty-one home rooms. There were sixteen for the greenest of the lot— the freshmen. Eighteen were needed for that flip crowd otherwise known as sophomores. Fif- teen housed the earnest and serious juniors, and twelve were needed to accommodate the high and mighty seniors. From the home rooms the crowd went forth daily to LC ' s sixty-five classrooms and, for the most part, got hold of the larnin that we call in fancy language a secondary school education. 123-Mrt. As usual, the big organization was the A.S.B. followed by the Boys ' and Girls ' Federations. One third of the stu- dents in school belonged to clubs. They provided a social outlet for the students, some of them holding Christmas parties, and annual picnics in the spring. Beyond this, however, was the educational value of each organization. Having 24 school clubs, students are given an oppor- tunity to join one or more that suit their interests. Page sixty-five em ester The year began for the A.S.B. with the installation of the first semester offieers on Sep- tember 17. One of the first projects was Hello week early in October, and a mixer. Senior representatives: baseball, track, football, basketball, cross country, badminton, tennis. ports activity in the ' 54 Story was star -studded. The first champions were Art Trey ' s trackmen. Phil Baud ' s golf squad repealed last year ' s performance as Inland Empire high school champions. Then Mr. Frey ' s cross country runners swept through another champion- ship season, the third one straight. The football team won second honors in the city and third in the Columbia Basin conference. The tennis boys finished third in com- petition, while the baseball and basketball squads fin- ished fourth and fifth respectively. This past winter saw a new team formed— badminton, which won two out of three matches, although it was not entered in a league. The girls ' sports were successful in competition. With all this, LC can be proud of its Tigers, who produced from its seven varsity squads three champions. Page ninety-five For the first time in nine years, the varsity track squad, under the leadership of Coach Art Frey, took the city championship. The group last spring was led by outstanding men such as the mile-running Couchman brothers and Lee Mauro; three fine shot-putters, Art lames. T Marshall and John Mjoen; splinters Dick Anderson and Don Lundstrom; and Chad Mitchell, who won the city 440. The Bengals made a fine showing in the All-City, Tri- District, and State meets. Pogue won the low hurdle race and placed second in the highs against Coeur d ' Alene last spring. Power is a good word to describe three of the best shot-putters LC has pro- duced in years: John Mjoen, Art James, and Tom Marshall. James won the shot- put event in meets against Gonzaga, North Central, and Rogers, and was also all-city high jump champion. Marshall was the all-city shot-put champion. When Dick Anderson, lead man, started a relay race the results were like a chain reaction. These dashing dashmen com- prised the LC relay team: Denny Bergin. Chad Mitchell. Hiram Clark. Don Lund- strom, and Anderson. Mitchell, all-city 440 champion, went to state in this event. Clark also shone in the 440. Anderson and Bergin were two of the fastest men in the city in the 100 and 220 dashes, while Lundstrom was one of the hard- est men to beat in any of the four events. ' i Reason Sparked by drive and teamwork, Bob Bartlett ' s Tigers finished second in the city league and third in the Columbia Basin conference, in a thrill-packed season. L.C. finished second in the Merry-Go-Round, lost the Rogers game 18-0, beat Walla Walla 6-0, took North Central 14-13, tied Gonzaga 26-26, dropped a 12-0 contest to Rog- ers, lost to Yakima 27-26, beat Gonzaga 25-20 in a great second half rally, and came from behind again in the thrilling last game of the season to best N.C., 20-19. Some of the highlights that made this a thrilling season were LeRoy Blick ' s tremendous passing and running drive, Jack Domit ' s fine line play, Denny Bergin ' s great punt returns, Art James ' fine kicking (often under pressure), Don Lundstrom ' s clutch running, and the sensational pass receiving of ends Lowell Klatt and Fred Vogel. As thrilling as the offensive action was the defensive, which was climaxed by Hiram Clark ' s spectacular leaping pass interception in the very last few minutes of L.C. ' s 20-19 victory over N.C.
