I 0 i ,, WWW J, WMM! 7Qe'QffLv ,U ol WV 1 uf .L ANNIVERSARY Lewis and Clark is now old enough to have a history and plenty of traflitions. Every now and then, it is the belief of the Tiger Staff, the student body, and teachers can well stop and recall some significant part of the past. Such recalling may help the school do better in the present. With this idea in mind, the Tiger Staff has con- sidered it fitting to recall an important event of forty years ago: the time when the Lewis and Clark student body first occupied its splendid new building. + l Page two

Famous EX-President Made Speech at Cornerstone Laying Because the old South Central high school was destroyed by fire, the new Lewis and Clark high school came into being. It was built on the location of the old building at a cost of approximately .S500,000. Plans for the new building were drawn up by Architect E. E. Rand. The inside of the building somewhat resembled the old school, as the auditorium was centrally located in both. The stage in the old school, however, was at the north end and one could go directly to the stage from the office without having to go around. The name for the new school was decided on at a meeting held in the Oakes Cafe, a well-known Sprague Avenue restaurant. Many School Board officials thought the name South Central should be retained but others believed a name depicting the Northwest more appropriate. The name Lewis and Clark, suggested by Principal Henry M. Hart, met with immediate approval and was decided upon. April 8, 1911, was the date set for the laying of the cornerstone, which is located at the northwest corner of the building. Ex-President Theodore Roosevelt, wearing his characteristic mustache and glasses, gave the dedication speech. Other noted people attending the ceremony and shown in the picture are Principal Hart, Senator Miles Poindexter, Governor Marion Htl!!! H. B. Dewey, state superintendent of schools, Bruce M. VVatson, city superintendent of schools, Mayor W. VV. Hindley, and C. C. Dill, who at that time was deputy prosecuting attorney. Page three
