Hart in 1928, Mr. Parker became prin- cipal on july I, 1942. The building has been al- tered considerably since it was first occupied in 1912. One of the largest organs in the area was installed in the auditorium in 1923. It is a four- manual Austin instrument with the pipes arranged on both sides . of the Stage. ABRAHAM LINCOLN PARKER In the fall of 1947 the audi- torium was reconstructed and now resembles the most modern theater in design. The stage area was enlarged and the lighting modernized. Ticket booths were built in front and a public addres.s system installed. The boys, gym, after a minor fire in 1932, was remodeled and a better gallery was built without the running track. HENRY MELVIN HART Forty years ago Henry M. Hart was an exceedingly proud principal, for it was in the spring of 1912 that the new Lewis and Clark High School first opened its doors. During the week of April 1-8, School Board mem- bers, teachers, and .students kept open house for the citizens of Spokane in connection with the dedicatory exercises of our splen- did new building. In june, 1910, the old South Central burned and from the ashes of it had arisen a new and HENRY MELWN HART larger building. It was Principal Hart who gave the name, Lewis and Clark, to the new school, in memory of the two famous explorers who led an expe- dition through this region in 1804. It has proved to be a distinctive name. Every department was outfitted to offer the finest opportunity ever presented to a Spokane high school student. The new auditorium provided for over 1500 seats and a large concert grand piano was purchased at a cost of 31650. On the first day of school in the new building-April 8, 1912-a national rec- ord was set. The student body, by working together with the teachers, carried out the whole process of enrollment in exactly 20 minutes. Huge bulletins gave the name of every student, his session room number, and the number of his locker. By 9 o'clock every student was in his proper room and seat. It was considered a remarkable begin- ning for this great new institution. Some of the ideals of the new school were expressed as follows in a Lewis and Clark journal editorial dated May, 1912: A century ago, Lewis and Clark, in their famous expedition, laid the foundation of our claim to the great Northwest, which was to become the home of a freer, simpler democracy. And today the great institution that has been named for them can con- tinue in the destiny which they were opening up. This school can frown on cheapness and snobbery and uphold the equality of the individual. It can reflect the aims and ideals of its builders. It can preserve the atmosphere of the Wes't and the spirit of Spokane. It can stand always for the things that are rightf, Pu ye six

WILLIAM W. TAYLUH In 1912, a familiar figure around the school was john L. Dunn, vice principal and head of the Mathematics department. A small, plump, hald gentleman with glasses, he was sometimes called ajerryv hy the boys, a name he greatly disliked. William VV. Taylor, our present vice principal, has held this position for 10 years. He has acquired some gray hair from making and changing programs, and worrying over the conduct of certain boys, but nevertheless through all of this has kept his genial disposition. MISS BEHNAUINE MCIILINEY Forty years ago, there was no counterpart to Miss Bernadine M cC lincy, our girls, adviser, according to the records. Why, we can only guess. Perhaps the two hundred and some girls were so well behaved, they did not need an adviser. Miss M cClincy returned this year, after a year,s leave of ahsence, during which she attended Columhia university, where she received her Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Personnel Administration.
