Every now and then, it is the belief of the Tiger Staff, the student body, and teachers can well stop and recall some significant part of the past. Such recalling may help the school do better in the present. With this idea in mind, the Tiger Staff has con- sidered it fitting to recall an important event of forty years ago: the time when the Lewis and Clark student body first occupied its splendid new building. + l Page two Famous EX-President Made Speech at Cornerstone Laying Because the old South Central high school was destroyed by fire, the new Lewis and Clark high school came into being. It was built on the location of the old building at a cost of approximately .S500,000. Plans for the new building were drawn up by Architect E. E. Rand. The inside of the building somewhat resembled the old school, as the auditorium was centrally located in both. The stage in the old school, however, was at the north end and one could go directly to the stage from the office without having to go around. The name for the new school was decided on at a meeting held in the Oakes Cafe, a well-known Sprague Avenue restaurant. Many School Board officials thought the name South Central should be retained but others believed a name depicting the Northwest more appropriate. The name Lewis and Clark, suggested by Principal Henry M. Hart, met with immediate approval and was decided upon. April 8, 1911, was the date set for the laying of the cornerstone, which is located at the northwest corner of the building. Ex-President Theodore Roosevelt, wearing his characteristic mustache and glasses, gave the dedication speech. Other noted people attending the ceremony and shown in the picture are Principal Hart, Senator Miles Poindexter, Governor Marion Htl!!! H. B. Dewey, state superintendent of schools, Bruce M. VVatson, city superintendent of schools, Mayor W. VV. Hindley, and C. C. Dill, who at that time was deputy prosecuting attorney. Page three E 2 2 A 2 9' gs ww, A W sf V 4f 455 ia 'fe gi HENRY MELVIN HART Forty years ago Henry M. Hart was an exceedingly proud principal, for it was in the spring of 1912 that the new Lewis and Clark High School first opened its doors. During the week of April 1-8, School Board mem- bers, teachers, and .students kept open house for the citizens of Spokane in connection with the dedicatory exercises of our splen- did new building. In june, 1910, the old South Central burned and from the ashes of it had arisen a new and HENRY MELWN HART larger building. It was Principal Hart who gave the name, Lewis and Clark, to the new school, in memory of the two famous explorers who led an expe- dition through this region in 1804. It has proved to be a distinctive name. Every department was outfitted to offer the finest opportunity ever presented to a Spokane high school student. The new auditorium provided for over 1500 seats and a large concert grand piano was purchased at a cost of 31650. On the first day of school in the new building-April 8, 1912-a national rec- ord was set. The student body, by working together with the teachers, carried out the whole process of enrollment in exactly 20 minutes. Huge bulletins gave the name of every student, his session room number, and the number of his locker. By 9 o'clock every student was in his proper room and seat. It was considered a remarkable begin- ning for this great new institution. Some of the ideals of the new school were expressed as follows in a Lewis and Clark journal editorial dated May, 1912: A century ago, Lewis and Clark, in their famous expedition, laid the foundation of our claim to the great Northwest, which was to become the home of a freer, simpler democracy. And today the great institution that has been named for them can con- tinue in the destiny which they were opening up. This school can frown on cheapness and snobbery and uphold the equality of the individual. It can reflect the aims and ideals of its builders. It can preserve the atmosphere of the Wes't and the spirit of Spokane. It can stand always for the things that are rightf, Pu ye six ARRAHAM LINCOLN PARKER Today-forty year.s after the building was compieted-there sits in the principalis chair, Abra- ham Lincoln Parker. Appointed vice principal by Henry M. Hart in 1928, Mr. Parker became prin- cipal on july I, 1942. The building has been al- tered considerably since it was first occupied in 1912. One of the largest organs in the area was installed in the auditorium in 1923. It is a four- manual Austin instrument with the pipes arranged on both sides . of the Stage. ABRAHAM LINCOLN PARKER In the fall of 1947 the audi- torium was reconstructed and now resembles the most modern theater in design. The stage area was enlarged and the lighting modernized. Ticket booths were built in front and a public addres.s system installed. The boys, gym, after a minor fire in 1932, was remodeled and a better gallery was built without the running track. Later the wornout metal lockers were replaced with new wire baskets and a large fan was installed to circulate the air and improve .sanitary conditions. During the .spring of 1949, a new fluorescent lighting sy.stem was installed throughout the building. The lights consist of long tubes extending from the front to the rear of the rooms and are covered with perforated metal grills which resemble Kegg cratesf, In 1950 a modern darkroom was built adjacent to room 330 for use by the pho- tography classes. The main room is used for developing pictures and the two smaller rooms for loading cameras. Masonite cabinets and a double shelf encircling the main room were installed. In 1949-59, the Home Economics department was completely remodeled. The 1ate.st equipment was installed in the kitchen and the dining room was redecorated and furnished with the latest styles. 1n the spring of 1951, new trophy cases were built on each side of the auditorium. The new glassed-in cases are of modern design. The Industrial Arts department was the last place where improvements were made. In 1951 the partition between two rooms was removed and the new room completely revamped. Pa ge seven WILLIAM W. TAYLUH In 1912, a familiar figure around the school was john L. Dunn, vice principal and head of the Mathematics department. A small, plump, hald gentleman with glasses, he was sometimes called ajerryv hy the boys, a name he greatly disliked. William VV. Taylor, our present vice principal, has held this position for 10 years. He has acquired some gray hair from making and changing programs, and worrying over the conduct of certain boys, but nevertheless through all of this has kept his genial disposition. MISS BEHNAUINE MCIILINEY Forty years ago, there was no counterpart to Miss Bernadine M cC lincy, our girls, adviser, according to the records. Why, we can only guess. Perhaps the two hundred and some girls were so well behaved, they did not need an adviser. Miss M cClincy returned this year, after a year,s leave of ahsence, during which she attended Columhia university, where she received her Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Personnel Administration. The speakers at commencement were selected in dif- ferent ways: two appointed by the prin- cipal, two elected by the class, and two through high scholarship. c'Sweet Gene- oieoen was the graduating play, the first to be given in the auditorium. As its graduation memorial, the class made a present of 25 imported French carbon re- mductions of great pieces of architecture and painting. Thus one of our corridors became known as Cathedral corridorn be- cause the pictures of the famous cathedrals of the world were hung there. One was Nave Lein, staunch alumnus, and another Eric Iohnston, now administrator for tion pictures. While the new Lewis Clark was being constructed, these was mo- and stu- dents had gone to school in the North Central high school building. There were two sessions and two principals. It is safe to say that all South side high school stu- dents were happy to give up their North side schooling and take up work in the building which was called the toast of the Northwest. A man named Cook was coach. just before a trip to the Palouse country, he discovered four of the team were not up in their studies. In two days, the team was built up, coming home from their trip with three wins and no losses. y.
