Histor As we come to the end of our high school attendance, and as we look backward briefly, we discover that not even one of the group who started the Class of 1956, back in the fall of 1944, is now numbered among our Seniors! The previous September both Ronnie Mahaffie and Ronnia Brown, along with about twenty other first graders, started their formal education under Mrs. Andrews, who was teacher of the second grade also. We discover, too, that Ronnie Mahaffie is the only Senior who has always gone to our school. for Ronnie Brown moved away for several years after the first grade. Johnny Struthers joined our class in the second grade, and Mike McCarty and Robert Belveal came to it in the fifth. In the sixth grade came Shirley Kendrick. Two--Bill Richardson and Ronnie Brown- -then joined it in the seventh grade. In the eighth grade our class was enlarged by nine--Jean Salazar, 1.ris Amos, Katharine Kratzer, Charlotte Ballejos, Jean Wight, Alice Pepper, Billy Glasspoole, Herman Esquibel, and Garry Rice--most of whom are now hoping to graduate with us this coming May. When we were a Freshman class, we were joined by four--Dorothy Dalton, Arthur Dalton, Barbara Montgomery, and Bill Haleg but Bill left the same year. Mrs. Struthers was our Freshman class mother, and Mr. Highfield was our sponsor. At the close of the year Shirley Kendrick withdrew, reducing our class membership to twenty prospective Sophomore boys and girls. The most memorable event of our Freshman year was our initiation into high school. Our money-making projects were a program of one-act plays and two different dances. Eight new ones came to increase our Sophomore class membership. They wereg Theresa Sharp, Delores Schaefer, Wanda Hazen, Joyce Bomgardner, Betty Johnson, Sara Sue Howell, Teddy Barnhart, and Monte Jo Parkinson. Jean Bovard, Barbara Montgomery, and Monte Jo Parkinson withdrew during the yearg and Sara Sue and Teddy both left at the end of the term. Mrs. Shappell was sponsor of us. As Sophomores we held several candy sales. Our basket- ball queen candidate, Jean Salazar, emerged from the voting victorious. At the carnival where the selection was made we Sophomores sponsored the washer-throw and wheel-of -fortune booths. ,We started our Junior year with twenty-two members. The new ones wereg Jim Snyder, David Petersen, Nellie Marie Fox, and Ronnie Mahaffie. Nellie left our school in March: and Jim and David withdrew at the end of the year. Gene Tuttle, Bob Gallagher, and Dale Sanders also joined us for a while during the yearg but they neither began nor ended it with us. Mrs. West was our sponsorg and we had two class mothers--Mrs. Struthers and Mrs. Wight, who helped us very much and also treated us to a delicious Christmas dinner. We presented for our Junior Play The Custers' Last Stand. We had a candy sale and a smorgasbord and sold hot dogs and coffee at football games to raise money for the Junior-Senior banquet-prom, which was held on April 2.2. We chose Stardust for a theme and used it throughout the decorations and program. Mr. Nordstrom has been our Senior sponsor, and Mrs. Struthers and Mrs. Wight are again the class mothers. Mrs. Struthers has been our class mother for seven years. A new Senior, Carol Adams, joined our class late in Septemberg but she withdrew again at Christmas time. Shirley Kendrick returned to Lewis-Palmer at the beginning of our Senior year, and we were joined also by Cheryl Brechlin, and Kenneth and Kenton Harris. That makes twenty-three hopeful Seniors at the time of this writing. Our biggest project has been putting out of the school yearbook, the West Wind. We have sold candy and are giving a play to raise addition- al money for a trip to be taken in May. We enjoyed the Christmas dinner and dance given us and our dates by Mrs. Wight and Mrs. Struthers, and we know we shall enjoy the Senior break- fast Miss Macey expects to have for us and the supper Mr. and Mrs. Nordstrom are planning. We are looking- forward to our Commencement on May 24, and to the Senior trip. We trust that we shall never become selfish enough to forget all those who have done so much to make our high school years both profitable and enjoyable! ll
