The previous September both Ronnie Mahaffie and Ronnia Brown, along with about twenty other first graders, started their formal education under Mrs. Andrews, who was teacher of the second grade also. We discover, too, that Ronnie Mahaffie is the only Senior who has always gone to our school. for Ronnie Brown moved away for several years after the first grade. Johnny Struthers joined our class in the second grade, and Mike McCarty and Robert Belveal came to it in the fifth. In the sixth grade came Shirley Kendrick. Two--Bill Richardson and Ronnie Brown- -then joined it in the seventh grade. In the eighth grade our class was enlarged by nine--Jean Salazar, 1.ris Amos, Katharine Kratzer, Charlotte Ballejos, Jean Wight, Alice Pepper, Billy Glasspoole, Herman Esquibel, and Garry Rice--most of whom are now hoping to graduate with us this coming May. When we were a Freshman class, we were joined by four--Dorothy Dalton, Arthur Dalton, Barbara Montgomery, and Bill Haleg but Bill left the same year. Mrs. Struthers was our Freshman class mother, and Mr. Highfield was our sponsor. At the close of the year Shirley Kendrick withdrew, reducing our class membership to twenty prospective Sophomore boys and girls. The most memorable event of our Freshman year was our initiation into high school. Our money-making projects were a program of one-act plays and two different dances. Eight new ones came to increase our Sophomore class membership. They wereg Theresa Sharp, Delores Schaefer, Wanda Hazen, Joyce Bomgardner, Betty Johnson, Sara Sue Howell, Teddy Barnhart, and Monte Jo Parkinson. Jean Bovard, Barbara Montgomery, and Monte Jo Parkinson withdrew during the yearg and Sara Sue and Teddy both left at the end of the term. Mrs. Shappell was sponsor of us. As Sophomores we held several candy sales. Our basket- ball queen candidate, Jean Salazar, emerged from the voting victorious. At the carnival where the selection was made we Sophomores sponsored the washer-throw and wheel-of -fortune booths. ,We started our Junior year with twenty-two members. The new ones wereg Jim Snyder, David Petersen, Nellie Marie Fox, and Ronnie Mahaffie. Nellie left our school in March: and Jim and David withdrew at the end of the year. Gene Tuttle, Bob Gallagher, and Dale Sanders also joined us for a while during the yearg but they neither began nor ended it with us. Mrs. West was our sponsorg and we had two class mothers--Mrs. Struthers and Mrs. Wight, who helped us very much and also treated us to a delicious Christmas dinner. We presented for our Junior Play The Custers' Last Stand. We had a candy sale and a smorgasbord and sold hot dogs and coffee at football games to raise money for the Junior-Senior banquet-prom, which was held on April 2.2. We chose Stardust for a theme and used it throughout the decorations and program. Mr. Nordstrom has been our Senior sponsor, and Mrs. Struthers and Mrs. Wight are again the class mothers. Mrs. Struthers has been our class mother for seven years. A new Senior, Carol Adams, joined our class late in Septemberg but she withdrew again at Christmas time. Shirley Kendrick returned to Lewis-Palmer at the beginning of our Senior year, and we were joined also by Cheryl Brechlin, and Kenneth and Kenton Harris. That makes twenty-three hopeful Seniors at the time of this writing. Our biggest project has been putting out of the school yearbook, the West Wind. We have sold candy and are giving a play to raise addition- al money for a trip to be taken in May. We enjoyed the Christmas dinner and dance given us and our dates by Mrs. Wight and Mrs. Struthers, and we know we shall enjoy the Senior break- fast Miss Macey expects to have for us and the supper Mr. and Mrs. Nordstrom are planning. We are looking- forward to our Commencement on May 24, and to the Senior trip. We trust that we shall never become selfish enough to forget all those who have done so much to make our high school years both profitable and enjoyable! ll IRIS AMOS Annual Staff, Ass't Art Editor Football Queen ,.,,,,,,,, Cheerleader 4,,,, Class Officer ,,., Pep Club .......... .,.. Our Prophecy The date ls now June in the year of 19665 the place ls the brand new Lewis-Palmer High, where the 1956 graduates have come for a class reunion. Some of the alumni had a hard time finding the school because Monument ls now so large fabout eight million in populatlonj and there are so many high schools lfour hundredl. Jean Salazar is the first to arrive. She managed to take a day's vacation from being a very, very private secretary. In- cldently, she is the first secretary to make a million dollars. Wanda Hazen has been married to six millionaires--one at a time, of course. Next, Ronnie Brown speeds ln, doing 110 miles per--he has just won the Indlanapolis'500, and he has been so shocked he thinks he ls still driving ln lt. Dorothy Dalton arrives in her private plane. She is a comedienne of world fame and has her own hour-long TV show three nights per week. Hardly anyone recognizes her because she has dyed her hair blonde, and all of her freckles are gone now that she never gets out ln the sun anymore. John Struthers is a brilliant jet pilot and is now an instructor at the Alr Academy. Joyce Bomgardner is next to join the party. She gets out of her station wagon, followed by her six children, five dogs, and nine parakeets. Besides caring for all these, Joyce has a job making singing commercials for, a radio broadcasting company. Gary Rice stops ln. He ls a geography teacher at one of the junior high schools in Monument. Jean Wight comes from the horse ranch she owns in Kentucky. She can't stay long because she ls needed to groom a horse to be run ln the Kentucky Derby. Jean has grown quite thin and tall Know 5' 1l l. Iris Amos next runs in from Chicago. She is ln training to break the three-minute mile race. Right behind her comes Charles McGee, who has been assigned to do a picture story of Iris, known as the 'most beautiful mller. Mike McCarty, who is a politician running for President, stops by, campaigning for votes. The Harris twins, Kenneth and Kenton, drop by. They have made a fortune posing for Which One Has the Toni ? adver- tlsements. But neither one has a Tonl, really--they use Qulck. Bill Richardson, who is owner of a dairy, comes in. He does nothing but milk cows all day, he says: but we soon dis- cover hlm at his favorite pastime--arguing with anyone and everyone. Shirley Kendrick, who has a good start in competing with The Woman Who Lived in a Shoe arrives, carrying Kand half dragglngl her youngest--quintuplets. Cheryl Brechlln manages to snatch a little time away from her dance studio where she teaches the mambo and rumbo. Herman Esqulbel takes a little time off from his C. P. A. job. He can't stay long, so he is frantically running around trying to say Hello to everyone before he has to leave. Robert Belveal, who owns the biggest cattle ranch ln Colorado, drives up in hls baby-blue Eldorado Cadillac convertible. Theresa Sharp steps down from a T. W. A. Stratocrulser just in from the Orient. Theresa who looks very chic, and her wealthy husband have just come from a short fnlne monthsl vacation there. Charlotte Ballejos is the prosperous owner of a drug store. Delores Schaefer is a cheerleader at college. She likes leadlng cheers so well that she flunks on purpose--in that way she can keep on leading some more. Ronnie Mahaffle is a famous singer and has his own radio and TV program, called 'Root Beer Time. Millions of teen-age girls are howling for his autograph. A very famous and well-known journalist, by the name of Katie Kratzer, arrives rather late. She claims she was chasing down a story about a space ship that landed on the hills. It seems Katie is still looking for a man, and she thought there would be some men ln the space ship. Mr. Nordstrom, who has retired from teaching, has managed to take time out from playing chess with his old friends to come join us. Ere long we must all part again and go our separate ways. Palmer Lake Elementary School This has been a busy year for the teachers and pupils of the school in their efforts to main- tain a well-rounded program for the full development of its children. Regular visits of the county nurse and hot lunches have helped to keep them fit physically. Besides the regular school work they had classes in singing and in folk dancing. Good manners were stressed at all times. Taking part in community activities-has been part of the training in good citizenship. A song festival was given for the community at Christmas. Preparations are now being made for the annual spring program. All parents and others who have helped to make the school term a pleasant and profitable one are hereby thanked. Black Forest Elementar School The school has been experiencing a gradual, healthy growth--in September its enrollment was 170, and in February it was 188. In addition to training in the traditional three R's, the re was concentration on good citizenship, correct care of public property, and improved courtesy and fair play. The staff endeavored to create and maintain a happy, harmonious en- vironment from both teacher and pupil participation. The daily tasks were made more effective and more pleasant through the loyal cooperation of parents.
