Like every evolution on the ship, the co-operation of every crew member is required. Hours before leaving port the Engineering Department insures that the lVlason's physical plant is operational. The Radiomen bring up circuits and get radio checks. The Electronics Technicians energize the radar and test its accuracy. Meanwhile supply personnel are making a final check to make sure that everything the ship might need is on board. The Navigator gets the Captain's final approval on the ship's track and the Quartermasters and Radarmen lay out their charts. l 4 s. -L1 J. Pvt. The ship is now ready. The Weapons De- partment brings in the mooring lines and we cast off. As the last line clears the pier we hear underway shift Colors Quartermas- ters and Radarmen make recommendations to the Officer of the Deck and Engineers open valves. READY During the time the carrier is launching and recovering planes men are ready to swing into action if the plane should go in the vvater. The Plane Guard Detail is well trained to rescue a pilot if the need should occur-and it has. HELO DETAIL One benefit of carrier ops was the helo that brought our mail, men, and an occasional visitor. Russian surveillance ships follow every move the fleet makes. They are expert at harass- ment and cross the carrier's bow during flight ops and interfere with unreps. After a few experiences with the MASON they developed an awesome respect for the ship and a hatred for our black smoke. Retreat was the byword when 852 approached. 32 During long periods at sea the MASON must have consumables such as fuel, and ammunition. These stocks are replenished underway- unrep. Unreps are an all hands evolution and everyone does his share. There was only one person doing the layout in Tokyo because of the ship's schedule. The expert advise and counseling' of Daito, RD1 Lockhart, and Jim Rector, author of Reflection, helped make this book what it is. I thank you all for the experience I got and of course the seven weeks in Tokyo. This is the second volume covering our West Pac cruise and like Jim Rector, l too have tried to tell our story in pictures. The copy is my thought and since everyone remembers different things lha ve 'i tried to keep it at a minimum. Reflection covered the period from deployment to the six week yard period and Review covers the yards thru our return. if? M 1 'Fa V w .N J! V vi f N ' 'T , jllwa. Y lr!
