n U r ll ' v: CRUISE LOG of the USS MASON (DD852) 13 September 1955 to 4 March 1956 CREDITS Editor: ENS. Marshall Assistant: Mihulka FT3 y IRRO-GRAPHIC Produced by THE JACK DAVIDSON PUBLISHING CO. Box 989 San Diego 12, Calif. A SHORT HISTORY OF THE USS L F.MASON (DD852) USS MASON was named for PFC Leo- nard F. Mason, USMC, who was killed in action on Guam in World War II. For his heroism, he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. MASON was built at Ouincy, Massa- chusetts by Bethlehem Steel; she was launched 15 December 1945 under the sponsorship of PFC Mason ' s mother, Mrs. Hillery Mason of Lafayette, Ohio, and was commissioned 28 June 1946. MASON shook down in the Caribbean, and transited the Panama Canal to join DesDiv 152 in early 1947. She was over- hauled at Hunter ' s Point, and in June 1947 sailed for a ten month tour on the China Station. Upon her return, she participated in local operations for eight months, under- went overhaul at Bremerton, and in March 1949 joined DesDiv 32, sailing for eight months on the China station the following month. Upon her return, MASON operated loc- ally until June 1950, when she carried NROTC midshipmen to Pearl Harbor on their annual summer cruise. This duty com- pleted, MASON was refitted and regunned at Mare Island. In December 1950 MASON again sailed for the Far East, operating with TG 96.7 as an ASW ship for four months. The next two months were spent with TF 77 in support of carriers; late in May 1951, MASON was transferred to TF 95 and with this unit participated in the siege of Wonsan. In June MASON was as- signed to TG 95.1 as a blockade ship and screen unit for the British carrier element assigned. A well-earned rest was now due, and MASON returned to CONUS. In February 1952, MASON returned to the Orient; in March she was assigned to TF 95, and again took part in the Wonsan seige. In April, MASON screened TF 77, and then played an active role in HUK exercises with TG 96.2. In May, MASON joined the Formosa Defense Patrol. June saw MASON again with TF 11 off Korea; she remained here until September, at which time she sailed for her new home port — Long Beach, California. A winter in the Long Beach Naval Ship- yard, and a rugged spring spent in re- fresher training readied MASON for her next tour in Korean waters. Just before her departure, she operated for two weeks with NOTS INYOKERN, testing new ASW weap- ons; then on 16 May, with DesDiv 32 and DesDiv 301, MASON sailed west once more, spending June screening NEW JERSEY on and beyond the Bomb Line. The summer passed with HUK exercise and TF 77 in that unit ' s last Korean operations. As the Kor- ean War ended, MASON joined TF 95 for police duties, and then in September re- turned to TF 77 in their new area of opera- tions, the South China Sea. A tour on the Formosa Patrol, and another month with TF 77 finished this employment; in late November, MASON returned hom.e for a winter of local operations. In July 1954, MASON returned to the Far East, operating with TG 70.2 and TF 95, and finally TU 36.7.2, a typhoon evasion group. This was the first of thirteen typhoons, cer- tainly par for the course, which invaded mason ' s vicinity durmg this cruise. Upon her return in February 1955, MASON im- mediately entered the yard at Long Beach for a regular overhaul. Following her re- turn to operation, the ship went through refresher training, operated for NOTS INYOKERN, and prepared herself in gen- eral for her next cruise. MASON ' S 1955- ' 56 CRUISE MASON departed Long Beach 13 September 1955. Type training and short visits at Pearl Harbor and Midway Island characterized her seventh trip to the Orient. She arrived in Yokosuka, Japan on 6 October 1955 for 8 days te nder availability, interrupted by Typhoon Nora. Two days of type training marked the trip from Yokosuka to Buckner Bay, Okinawa. After replenishing and avoiding Typhoon Opal, MASON in company with DESDIV 32 joined TG 70.4 on 22 October for six days Hunter Killer opera- tions. Upon completion of these operations MASON returned to Buckner Bay for supplies, upkeep and type training. Departing Buckner Bay 6 November 1955, MASON joined TF 11 , the fast carrier task force. After two eventful weeks climaxed by a full-scale night re- plenishment operation, MASON and her crew were ready for Sasebo, Japan, the next port of call. From 19 November 1955 to 30 November 1955, MASON was made ready for further operations. Departing on 30 November, MASON joined TG 90.7 and took part in a NAVMARLEX amphibious operation at Kinmu Wan, Okinawa. Upon completion of NAVMARLEX, MASON proceeded to Buckner Bay for 2 days up- keep and replenishment. Departing 6 December, MASON joined the BEN- NINGTON (CVA20) and DESDIV 32 to provide plane guard services and conduct training exercises. Upon completion of this assignment MASON rejoined TF 77 for a second valuable period of task force train- ing. This training was again climaxed by a full scale replenishment, and MASON in company with DES- DIV 32 then headed for Hong Kong and a well earned Christmas holiday. From 21 December to 26 December liberty and rest revitalized MASON and her crew. Leaving Hong Kong 27 December, she enjoyed an uneventful pas- sage to Subic Bay on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. The duration of this visit to Subic was spent readying MASON for her most important mis- sion of the cruise, and on 3 January she departed for the Taiwan Defense Patrol. From 5 January to 29 January she operated off Taiwan, and then headed north. A stop at Nagasaki 1 and 2 February afforded a brief respite, and then she departed for Yokosuka, arriving 5 February. The next 1 1 days were spent preparing MASON for her return trip to CONUS, and she headed homeward on 17 February with DESDIV 32. Having rested briefly at Midway and Pearl Harbor, MASON moored in Long Beach on 4 March 1956. COMMANDING OFFICER Captain J. H. Raybum, CDR., USN entered the Navy in July 1940 under the V-7 program as an Apprentice Seaman.
