Through Their Hard Work, Patience, And Caring, They Have Helped Our Activities To Be A Success And Have Taught Us To Make The Most Of Our Opportunities. Throughout The Past Four Years We Have Grown To Appreciate Them Very Much. | We Have Shared Many Fond Memonies With Mrs. Belliveau And — Mrs. Crowley. Who Could Forget The Infinite Number Of Candy Sales And Flower Sales, The Excitement Of Decorating The Halls For The Brockton Game, Putting On The Senior Breakfast Or Producing One Of The Best Thanksgiving Rallies _ Ever Seen At LHS? We Also Had The Added Responsibility Of Planning Two Froms, As Well As Graduation. They Helped Us Handle All Of These Activities With Ease. Mrs. Belliveau And Mrs. Crowley Have Gone Beyond Being Our Advisors And Have Taken A Sincere Interest In The Class Of 1989. They Are Not Only Our Advisors, But Dear Friends. They Are Truly Special People And We, The Class Of ‘89, Will Be Eternally Grateful. We Are Glad To Have The Opportunity To Show Our Cratitude And Thank These Two Extraordinary People Who Have Done So Much For Us. The Class Of 1989 DEAR MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1989: When we decided to accept the positions as your class advisors, Mrs. Crowley from the very start and Mrs, Belliveau for your junior and senior years, we knew it would involve not only a lot of work and patience but also the wonderful rewards that come from working closely with young people. How time has flown by! We cannot believe that these very special high school years are coming to an end. There seemed so much to do at the beginning of your freshman year; as a Class, we had no money, hardly any organization, little unity and practically no identity at the high school with our reputation as ‘that class“! To those of you who helped on those thirteen fundraisers that first year, a special thanks. You sacrificed time from your friends and newly found status as high schoolers. We were all new to the job and anxious to get ‘'started’’ as a class and pointed in the right direction. The focus of those fundraising events was to have enough money to put on a great Junior Senior Prom in 1988, a prom we could be proud of. The committees for both that prom and this year’s first Senior Prom worked many hours to make both of them successful and memorable for everyone. We hope this year’s prom was all that you imagined your last high school prom to be. We are especially proud of the many achievements of the Class of 1989 both individually and as a group. In academics, sports, theater, the arts and vocational areas you have excelled; your enthusiasm and the positive effect you have had on Leominster High School and the community itself will not be forgotten soon. Many of you have left your names on the memory and record books of this school, whether it was for the great defeat of Brockton High School in October, the State Championship in baseball in 1988 (and hopefully in 1989), a wonderful and memorable production of ‘'Annie”’ in April, state awards in the area of vocational and technical education, and many other outstanding accomplishments. Those with whom you have come in contact will not soon forget you and the something of your unique selves that each one of you has comtributed in your letters at LUIS. And we had fun too! We will not forget the senior year, in particular the Thanks- giving Rally, and the Senior Breakfast; the Winter Carnival week's activities won by the senior class; the faculty student basketball game where you raised over five hundred dollars for the new playground at Doyle - Field; planning for our prom in May at the new Sheraton Inn; and of course, graduation practices, the class picnic, and finally graduation itself on June 2, 1989. We wish you nothing but happiness, success, and the fulfillment of all your dreams in the years after you leave Leominster High School. We are proud to have served you as Class advisors. You are an outstanding group of people and we are looking forward to many funfilled reunions in the years to come! Thank you for being the “great class with class’; we will miss seeing you every day... Just remember from both of us: “Until your try, you will never know that you can always do more - much more - than you think you can.’ Goodbye and good luck always. Love, Mrs. Ann Belliveau Mrs. Sherrill Crowley 4 Advisors ij Of The Class aa ry ff nA? Ge % es, ss , a a ne e x a : o CA CLASS |... =O OFFICERS President Chris Walsh a Vice President Paige Gopfert Oe “| Treasurer “lt Jerica Mazzaferro (ZS) @ Secretary Jen Reddy I look back on our four years at Leominster High School with great joy and pride. AS we journeyed up from junior high school we were dubbed “‘the worst class of the decade”’, but we leave behind us a legacy marked with an unprecedented excel- lence. We leave our numerous academic, athletic, and voca- tional accomplishments for future classes to follow. Besides achievements we leave with the knowledge that we have grown and matured together as a class. We depart the school as confident young adults ready to challenge the obstacles that lie ahead of us. I would like to thank you, my fellow classmates, for giv- ing me the opportunity to serve as your Class President for the last two years. I'd also like to thank my fellow class Officers for their hard work and support, because without them, my job would have been very difficult. For their guidance and dedication | would like to thank Mrs. Crow- ley and Mrs. Belliveau, our class advisors. As we step into the future we sadly let go of the security and warmth of high school. Hope- fully the years to come will bring happiness and success to all of us. Once again, | thank you for the honor you bestowed on me as Class President, and I wish you the best of luck in the future. Sincerely, Christopher M. Walsh President of the Class of 1989 Steven A. The USA Today number one ranked team in the country. Leom- inster 27, Brockton 12. It’s a rare event when something happens that ties together an entire community, the sort of thing that everyone wants to be a part of, that everybody-everybody-talks about in ev- ery classroom, in every hall, and in every store, the sort of event that begins every conversa- tion you have with everyone you run into for weeks afterward. One of those things happened Friday night, October 28, 1988, under the lights at Doyle Field. Most of us had come for the same reason- because our team was playing the number one-rated high school football team in the whole United States. Sure, we said we “‘liked Leominster’s chances” against Brockton, and we knew we had a strong team this year. But we expected to be in awe of this visiting team from a school of 5,500, with runningbacks built like bulls and with the speed of jackrabbits. After all, there hadn’t been 10,000 of us at any other game this year. What we got for $2.50 was more than a thrill- ing surprise. We got more than the greatest victory in 105 years of LHS football. We got ‘Pay Back”’. We felt a reason to swell with pride to tell people we were from Leominster. We got a high school football game that got us more excited than we've ever felt at a high school football game. We stood up in the stands and packed the hills at either end zone and yelled until we lost our voices-and we still liked the way we sounded. We were deafening. The stakes were high, but only because we set them so high. We felt a sense of confidence when our boys drove all the way downfield and scored on their first possession. We couldn't believe the holes our offensive line was opening up, or how our defense swarmed all over Brockton’s powerful runners every time they carried the ball. We had visions of Doug Flutie when Steve Santucci caught that tipped long bomb from Pudge Spinelli. We cringed when Brian Picucci limped off the field in the third quarter, but shook our heads in amazement as we watched Jay Caouette pick up the slack with some watch-my-feet-if- you-can running to keep the offense moving. We yelled “Yeah!” when Picucci gestured tri- umphantly toward the crowd in the scoreboard end zone after scoring. We almost lost our minds when Frankie lacoboni buried Brockton QB Bob Zurinskas with a crushing blind side hit. We did lose our minds when Doug Derry picked off that Zurinskas pass and raced into the end zone to hammer the last nail in Brock- ton’s coffin. And we sang and waved goodbye to Brock- ton’s team and their fans as they shuffled off Doyle after the game. We wanted them to hear us. We were number one now. And you know what we’re gonna call this one? That's right. “Pay Back’. This one’s “pay back” for all of our teams that have lost to Brockton, because none of those losses could ever be as devastating as this loss was for Brockton. This one’s for the Globe and the Herald for doing huge write-ups about Brockton and ig- noring Leominster year after year. This one’s for all those people who've pro- nounced the name of our city “Lee-O-minster”’ and for all those people who refer to our loca- tion as somewhere in “western Mass.”’. Now they'll find us on the map. This one’s “pay back” for all of us, and we're going to take it and put it in our pocket. Thank you Armond, Rudy, and Darnell. So let coach Dubzinski, the LHS superstars, and all those players who didn’t get into this game but played their hearts out at every prac- tice so that the starting line would be that much better come game time-let them all be proud. They deserve it. And let the LHS cheer- leaders and band and every senior, junior, sophomore and freshman in our school be proud too. Hey, let every teacher and every administration worker be proud, too, if they want. But no one’s going to claim a monopoly on pride with this one. We got ‘Pay Back”. Again, success and happiness to a class of students who have ruly eared it. Peter S. Michaels Assistant Principal To the class of 1989: You have been given a solid educational foundation to meet and deal with the challenges that life will present. Take the skills you have learned and look to the future. “Dream no small dreams and make no small plans.”’ But after you have dreamed and planned, work hard to make a happy and productive life. The best of luck and congratlations to the class of 1989. Roger R. Melanson Director, Occupational Education To the Class of 1989: Much has been said and written recently about public education in our country. Your achievements to date are proof that our graduates of today are prepared to compete with those who have gone before in the world’s marketplace. You have been given a firm foundation for the challenges that await you. I have every confidence that you are pre- pared to confront those challenges. and fulfill your responsibilities in a manner that will make all of us who are associated with Leominster High School proud. Best wishes in all your endeavors. Superintendent Louis R. Amadio To the Class of 1989: You can be justificably proud of your individual and collective achievements. Each of you has taken your individual interests, abili- ties, and initiative and applied them to the opportunities made avail. able to you by your parents and the Leominster Public Schools. Through that process you have attained your own level of success and achievement. Your future will likewise be determined by your application of abilities, interests and motivation to the opportunities presented to you in your past high school years. Whether you choose to further your formal education or proceed directly into the work force, your degree of success will in large measure be determined by your own efforts. The old saying still applies, “You get out of it what you put AN a gs into it.’” You are the key to your future. I extend my wishes for your a e future happiness. Assistant Superintendent Pelino A. George Whittemore Science Department “Respect is not something you can demand,” says Mr. Whitte- more. “You have to earn re- spect.’’ Few teachers have earned as much respect as Mr. Whittemore in so short a time. The respect is due to his knowl- edgeable mind, concern for the students, and contagious enthusiasm. Mr. Whittemore attended Keene State College and the Uni- versity of New Hampshire before doing graduate work at WPI, Clark, and U Mass. He taught at Worcester Academy for nine years before coming to Leomin- ster High in 1987 to teach ad- vanced physics courses and principles of technology. His suc- cess brought him the school Sci- ence Teacher of the Year award for 1987-1988. He is very im- pressed with the science depart- ment here; there is much mod- erm equipment and the teachers, according to Mr. Whittemore, “really care’’ about finding the best way to present physics won- ders in the classroom. Mr. Whittemore, in addition to his graduate work in physics and education, is currently writing two books. The first is a supple- ment to an AP physics textbook which will focus on “‘sidelight’’ areas of physics. The other pre- sents Mr. Whittemore’s strong views on education. He feels that today’s students have ‘‘more tal- ent than they are given credit for,’’ but too often they are opt- ing for less demanding coursework for various reasons. He also feels that there are too many non-teaching “experts” who actually ‘don’t have a clue” about how the system works. Teachers should have more power in the daily operation of schools. For their part, teachers need to teach “‘with, not at stu- dents’’, and parents must be in- volved in all aspects of their child’s education — ‘‘academic, moral, social, and otherwise”’. Mr. Whittemore’s hobbies in- clude golf, basketball, baseball, chopping wood, and playing the guitar. He has a wife and one daughter. He feels that science is important not only for the con- tent, but for teaching how to think critically and creatively — a talent that is “invaluable... and rare.” 0 Department Of English (from top) Department head Gilbert Bonita Flood, Donald Fredd, Nancy Tremblay, Ann Belliveau, Angela Buss, Gauthier, Scott Hay Joseph Hebert, Barry Lew, Jane Maguire, Steve Dauphanais Richard Mailloux, (next page) Donald Malley, Karen Moriarty, Geraldine Rheault, Louise Thomas, Angela Trudel pr OCUSis Sheila Rockwell English Department A graduate of Leominster High School and a fifteen year teach- er, twelve of them at the high school, Mrs. Rockwell is retiring from the school scene after 1988-1989 in order to spend more time with her family. She has nothing but praise for the department she is leaving be- hind. She says that she has al- ways been impressed with the strengths of the teachers in the English department and the great diversity of their talents. It is a department that “is always self-evaluating’’ and working to improve. However, it will be hard to replace Mrs. Rockwell and her articulateness, gentle character, and commitment to education. Mrs. Rockwell favors a large body of classic literature being taught at both the junior and se- nior high schools. She has a strong interest in English litera- ture; while she was teaching at Gallagher Junior High, Mrs. Rockwell appeared before the School Committee to protest the removal of literature as a course from the curriculum. Her opinion still is that the classics of litera- ture “give a firm background” for general knowledge as well as better understanding of human themes which do not change with time. For the future of U.S. education in general, Mrs. Rock- well believes that much depends on President Bush’s promise to be “the education president.” Expansion of basic English course Offerings at LHS is need- ed despite the emphasis on bud- get constraints. Mrs. Rockwell graduated from Smith College with a B.A. and from Fitchburg State College with a master’s degree in teach- ing English. She is married and has three married children. A true veteran of the department, he has taught for twenty-eight years with his degrees being from U Mass, Fitchburg and Fra- mingham State. Among his goals for the de- partment are making the social studies department more visible through a nearby bulletin board yearly history contest, class- room stress on historical per- sonalities, a social studies re- source room, and a _ bulletin board for upcoming social stud- ies-related events. When asked about the value of social studies, Mr. Baker had much to say. “Know thy neigh- bor’ and “Social awareness” were the main ideas, he offered, as “you ought to be aware what makes a country tick if you want to communicate and be heard by them.” Mr. Baker wants everyone to know that though history, civics, and geography have gotten ‘Enough bad press”, the world “is really exciting.” Mr. Mrs. Baker have three grown children; he enjoys partic- ipating in the Sports’ Car Club’s America Races. He at- tended Boston University, Fitch- burg State, the University of Low- ell, and Atlantic Union College, and majored in mathematics with a minor in physics. Now having settled at Leomin- ster High, Mr. Garcia’s opinion of the LHS Math Department is that it has been very good at recog- nizing and correcting problems and rough edges in the curricu- lum. The department is also strong in its unity and willing- ness to learn from the students — having students with the de- sire to learn helps greatly in the teaching process. Among the options available to the Math Department for smoothing out individual stu- dent problems are the comput- ers in the Math Resource Koom. Mr. Garcia has seen the use of these computers by the students as a tool for motivation of all classes of students. He has also seen the use of the eighth grade achievement test as a real help to many students to get off on the right foot in starting the study of algebra early. This pro- gram, Mr. Garcia believes, intro- duces highe r mathematics early enough to allow students a much better degree of retention and recognition of concepts later on in high school. Mr. Garcia, in addition to his gift shop, is interested in real es- tate. He has a wife and three chil- dren. Mr. Garcia likes chess and photography. At one time, when teaching elementary school, he led a photography club, and en- joyed it. She enjoys teaching here and has always enjoyed Spanish and foreign languages in general. Mrs. Davis earned her degree at Framingham State College. Mrs. Davis has a very high opinion of the Foreign Language Department at L.H.S. When asked about the way problems were handled in her department, she said, ‘What problems?” Evi- dently, Mr. Rheault, head of the Foreign Language department, keeps his area running very smoothly. Mrs. Davis is very proud of her department and recognizes its expansion as a very good sign, having hopes for its continuance. In her spare time Mrs. Davis enjoys reading, taking classes and “working out’’. She has a husband with whom she travels frequently, and she shares these trips with her classes through slides. When asked what her favorite part of the job is, she declared it is undoubtedly the kids. She loves them all and enjoys know- ing them for the person each is in her class. Also, she has al- ways liked the low numbers in her classes so as to be able to focus on each student often. (She’s a real sweetheart!). Betty Leonard Business Department Mrs. Leonard has one particu- larly vivid image of a trip to the New York City World’s Fair. There were two futuristic inven- tions on display - ‘‘a computer. . . and a TV Set.”’ The quide stated that one day everyone in the au- dience would own each of the two marvels. Mrs. Leonard re- calls that upon hearing this, her mother advised, “Don’t believe him.” The rapid progress that has occurred to make the above scene seem almost ridiculous has been a part of what Mrs. Leonard terms the advancement of civilization from ‘‘an agricul- tural society ... to a manufactur- ing society .. . and now the infor- mation society.’’ The Business Department at Leominster High plays a key role in teaching stu- dents how to operate in that new society. Mrs. Leonard, who has headed the department for over twenty years, is keeping the pace with one of the ‘miraculous in- ventions’’ — the computer. Business education has a room of IBM personal computers used only by the department. All ac- counting students have access to the room; other classes can have access to those or Sperry Rand computers. In addition, word processing has been of- fered the past five years, a skill that helps enormously in college. The philosophy of the depart- ment, according to Mrs. Leon- ard, is “to concentrate on pro- viding marketing skills’’ for modem students. This helps in two ways. More “‘entry-level job possibilities’’ are opened up to graduating students, for office work and the increasingly popu- lar accounting field. Business education also prepares a stu- dent for college with such useful skills as typing, word processing, computer handling, and _ busi- ness law, which also deals with generalities in such legal mat- ters as contracts. Mrs. Leonard is working to make “‘keyboarding’’ and word processing requirements. The very warm and amiable Mrs. Leonard has been at Leom- inster High for twenty-six years. She went to New York, Hunter, and Columbia universities and was a public accountant in New York before coming to Leomin- ster. She is married to a profes- sor emeritus and has three chil- dren, all, she notes proudly, Leominster High graduates. Yet that description certainly does not apply to the enthusiastic and vivacious Mrs. Kogut and her tal- ented students in the art division of Leominster High, one of sever- al separate sections (home eco- nomics, music, woodworking, drafting) in the fine and industri- al arts department. Mrs. Kogut found that her high school art course was without much learning or curriculum and had many discipline problems. As an art teacher she has tried to correct those problems, and now shares beginner, intermediate, and advanced art courses with three other teachers. The courses progress from basic skills to the usage of any medi- um for a particular project. Mrs. Kogut came to Leomin- ster High five years ago and start- ed an annual art exhibition the following year. The exhibition started on a small scale but has since expanded to include five hundred pieces from grades nine through twelve in 1989. There was also a display of the works of this year’s senior class. Two stu- dents, Bettina Charpentier and Dave Tata, competed at the state level, and Dave went on to na- tional competition. Mrs. Kogut had taught for one year before coming to LHS. She has also taught a course at the Worcester Art Museum. She owns a portfolio of fifteen works, and has displayed pieces at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her specialties are pottery and pencil drawing. Mrs. Kogut went to Bridgewater State and is now eaming her master’s degree. She plans to return to creating art in the near future. Mrs. Kogut enjoys the enthusi- asm and creativity of her stu- dents, and she believes that the classes offer an opportunity for problem solving, relaxation, and an expression of freedom. She feels that anyone wishing to take up a craft should enroll in a suit- able course; art composed with- out outside ideas tends to be- come “‘stale’’. Above all, artists cannot just be outrageous — first, “you have to be good... real good.’’ After that, artists may do whatever they please; according to Mrs. Kogut, one of the good points about crafts- manship is that it gives you the “freedom to be strange”. The teams’ first game versus Waltham was the first hint that this team was, indeed, something special. The Blue Devils secured themselves as a state power in schoolboy football by notching victories over the likes of Boston College High, Marlboro, and Shrews- bury, and running up a record of 6-0. The stage was set for the annual battle between Massachusetts’ perennial power Brockton and the highly touted Blue Devils. Coming into the game, Leominster was 6-0 and ranked third in the state, while the Boxers’ were not only 1 in Massachusetts, but also ranked the top high school football team in the country by USA today. The Blue Devils, led by the superb running of seniors Jay Caouette and Brian Picucci, as well as an amazing performance by the entire defensive squad, thoroughly pummelled the Brockton Boxers’ 27-12. Doug Derry iced the game with a late fourth quarter interception which he ran back for a touchdown. It was, perhaps, the greatest victory in the history of Leominster sports and will be remembered for years to come. The Blue Devils went on to become the 1 team in the state and were ranked nationally as 12. They capped off an undefeated regular season by thrashing arch-rival Fitchburg 25-8, thanks to the inspired play of defensive tackle Daryl Robichaud, who was named the game’s MVP. Though losing the Division One Super Bowl to St. John’s 8-7, the whole city of Leominster is proud of this year’s team and its terrific accomplishments. This year’s team com- piled a 15-2-1 record on its way to a district playoff berth. The team was led by co-MVP’s Jason Rus- chioni and David Gendron. Rus- chioni, who will be returning next year as a junior, compiled an im- pressive 17-1 personal record with an average of 40. Gendron, a junior this year, had a 12-1-4 per- sonal mark to go along with his 41.7 average. The team’s MIP was freshman James Clark, who con- tributed a solid effort all season. Once reaching the Team Dis- tricts, the team then qualified for the State Tournament in Cohas- set, MA. The Blue Devils eventual- ly came away with the number ten ranking in the state, and with the likes of Ruschioni, Gendron, and Clark all returning for the next year the team is looking forward to even greater future success.
