Lo . : = E !eominster High School Leominster, MA 01455 sex! “cmt LD ee ” 7 = ‘ “It’s Time For Moving On”’ We’ve traveled a long, long time together, and there have been a lot of good things on the way. But now, it’s almost time for leavin’, and things I feel inside are very hard to say. But it’s time for moving on my friend, I hold back all the tears and sorrow, It finally is time to go our sep’rate ways. And | want to wish you well my friend as we search for new tomorrows. Go as you must but please Don’t forget our yesterdays. Remember the dreams we dreamed together All of the joys we shared in getting to today. Now just one time before you leave me reach out and take my hand and help me walk away. It’s time for moving on. Don’t forget our yesterdays. It’s time for moving on... Thanks For Everyth ng “Mom” Johnson. . . We, the members of the Class of 1984, would like to extend our gratitutde to the woman who has helped to make our four years at L.H.S. such an enriching experience. As our class advisor, Mrs. Johnson had to pick up the pieces of past advisors during our busiest year. However, she was well-organized and her devotion and enthusiasm were an immense help in planning the prom. Mrs. Johnson could always be seen helping out at our class activities. Be it dances, the rally, prom committee, .. . we could always depend on her guidance and rationa- lity. Most importantly though, Mrs. Johnson will be remembered as a special friend to many of us. She was always there to listen to our problems, class- related or personal, and to offer us sound advice in her caring way. Thank you, Mrs. Johnson, for being our advisor, our friend, our ‘““mom’’. You’ve truly enriched our lives and this dedication is a small token of our appreciation. To my fellow classmates: We live in a world where everything is given a title. We were given the “‘title’’, Class of 1984. This name gave us purpose, direction, and more importantly, a reason to be proud; not so much in what we have accomplished, but in who we are. It gives us the determination to go into the future confident that we will succeed. It is now time for us to leave, but we leave Leominster High, not the Class of 1984. We will belong to this class, and the class to us, forever. The laughter, tears, successes and failures we have shared will always be here for us to learn from and re-experience. As I walk through the halls of L.H.S. I notice many things: the conversation of friends, the heat of arguments, and the elation of people when they have realized success. I suppose that if | would have taken that walk five years ago | would have noticed the same things; but there is something unique about our class that sets us apart. Even from the beginning this was true. We chose not to follow the precedent of others, but rather we fashioned our own. Maybe the reason for this is that we are a class of individuals whose goals are so diverse. This marks the final time that I, as President, will be able to communicate with you before we go on our separate roads. | wish to thank you for your criticism.and confidence in me as your President. These past four years were unlike anything | have experienced. I wish you good luck and bid you farewell. This is a title of which we should be proud. Rather than being a group of bland conformists, we exercised our individuality and proved successful every time. As freshman, we entered L.H.S. timidly at first but then with the help of advisors Mrs. Breau and Mr. McDermott, we quickly adjusted. By the end of our first year at the high shcool, we had already distinguished ourselves academically, theatrically, and athletically. In our sophomore year, Proposition 2 ¥2 thrust many changes upon us. We saw the end of the 7 period day. Many teachers had been laid off, among them both our class advisors. This is when Mr. Harvey Bernard came through for us and became our class advisor. We began to realize that no setback was too great to keep us from ‘“‘movin’ on.” Proud Juniors, we encountered another problem: We lost another class advisor to budget cuts. We then were fortunate enough to find Mrs. Phyllis Johnson and Mr. Michael Vaillette. These two came through in a bind and helped us to plan one of the most successful proms ever. “Mighty-Mighty Seniors’’- We are leaving Leominster High glowing with pride in our achievements. Perhaps the most memorable activities were the 100th Thanksgiving Day Game and Rally. With a committee headed by Sarah Bernier, Lucia Bisol, and Dina Mammone, we were able to hold a rally that sent our football team off to a victory. And who can forget the players’ roast? Two of the most amusing comedians were Adrienne Epstein as Robert Salvatelli and Lynne Spadafora as Douglas Hatfield. She strutted up to the microphone and declared “‘The name is Goudy Dubois!”’ In addition to our football team, the basketball, soccer, and chess teams were extremely successful. Theatrically, our class was very impressive. Our musical, “Mack and Mabel’? was a smash hit. Robert Lefevbre performed beautifully, even with a broken nose! Lisa Lipkind and Dawn Tocci both had spectacular performances as Mabel. The Senior Class Play, ‘Harvey,’ was a huge success. Shepard Awards went out to Matt Longo, best actor; Beth Pirro, best actress; Wendi Philpotts, best supporting actress; and Doug Blair, best supporting actor. Our proudest moment was our long victory in the Interclass Play Competition, with ‘“‘The Cave,” under the direction of Debbie Boucher and Lynne Spadafora. i wate They are not dead; life’s flag fi never furled. Four years ago we sat in the cafe and were allowed to talk, laugh and have a good time. However, as sophmores it was study in the C-wing for the majority of us. Old rooms and no talking was expected but not accepted. In the 11th grade many of us had study in the new rooms in the C section, such as C 205. Remember the Study halls are worthwhile. room which was like an icebox in the winter, and in the spring it was hot because there weren’t any windows. Now, making it to our senior year, we are all dispersed. Some seniors help out in the underclassmen’s gym classes, while others spend time in the guidance office. We spend time looking up colleges, using the computer, talking with guidance counselors, asking each other how to do algebra homework, or whatever else needs to be done. However, most of the time we just talk about what’s new in our lives. No matter where you spend your study periods, its a time most likely spent with friends, and even if talking is forbidden, having friends near makes the fifty minutes of study hall all worthwhile. One event that seldom resulted in anything short of excitement at Leominster High School was an assembly. Whether we gathered to listen to campaign speeches, to watch a film, or to discuss class business, it was always the perfect break in the monotony of “‘that same old routine.”’ Many students, during their campaigning escapades, resorted to that all to common “Vote for me’’ speech. Yet a few speeches will simply never be forgetten. For instance, Derek Goldberg announced to the class that the only reason he was running for the office of Student Council Rep. was because it “looks good on my college resume!’’? Dina Mammone impressed all with her poetic ability and made her entire speech rhyme. Another outstanding speech was one of Class President Wayne Daigle. In this rhetoric he described the many tactics of speech giving, including the “‘insult method’’, the “wimp tactic’, and the “‘straight-forward manner’’. No one has yet decided which of these Wayne used when he presented this speech. During our stay here at L.H.S., the class of ’84 sat through over fifty campaign speeches. Of all these, Robert A. Salvatelli’s was by far the most memorable: “‘Ask not what your class can do for you, but what you can do for your class.”’ Patxi Arrutia Landene 8 30 Drch. Algorta, Vizcaya Spain At the beginning of the year there were many excited whispers circulating about “that new boy’. We were even more impressed when we discovered that this smiling friend was adjusting to the incredible change that foreign exchange students undergo. Patxi decided to come to Leominster to learn more about the American people and language. One of his best experiences has been his involvement on athletic teams - soccer and swimming. Patxi is well-liked by all at LHS, including the faculty who praise his high academic achievements. The feeling is mutual, as Patxi likes LHS better than his home school. He says that the teachers are more helpful and the classes are very interesting. His all-time favorite class is ae HOw di’ a % aaret aa English with the ever witty Mr. Fredd. Friends are important to Patxi and he has plenty of them. He feels that one of the main reasons his year has been so enjoyable is because his classmates have been so kind and friendly. He has attended dances, rallys, and football games, and is impressed with the school spirit. As for the future, Patxi is planning to go into the engineering field, perhaps staying in the U.S., attending WPI. Patxi is very glad that he made the decision to come to Leominster, and so are we. He has put a smile on many faces and been the bright spot in many students’ senior year. When we remember Patxi, it will be with a smile for the inspiration and happiness he’s brought us, and tears of regret that we’ve only had one year together. Thanks Patxi, for sharing your life with us. What’s Cookin’ Foods is one class that is restricted only to seniors, and is regarded as somewhat of a “‘gut course’’. Many seniors anxiously await this chance to take it easy, yet to their surprise, this class isn’t always fun and games. In the beginning, the students are confined to answering the multitude of questions, at the end of each chapter, and completing millions of worksheets. Next comes the part for which the entire class has been waiting. It is time to bake, and put all that they’ve learned to use. It is a lot of fun to see fellow students bake things just like mother makes. The most difficult part of all is the clean- up. The dishes aren’t so bad to wash but the clothes can’t be cleaned until you get home! Just one reminder to those Foods students who in years to come may forget some of the helpful hints learned in this class; “‘Just look it up in your ‘Betty Crocker Cook Book’.”’ Clockwise from top right: Lynne Marino; David Palazzi; Julie Sheldon; Davin Fors; Maria Liscotti; David McHugh; Theresa Lavoie. Here in the art department of Leomister High School, creativity abounds. They have taken a major part in decorating the hallways for rallies and making posters to advertise events. Anyone travelling through the E-wing of the school has seen the murals of popular musicians from the past three decades, right into the eighties. Some of the stars featured in these wall paintings are Bing Crosby, Lawrence Welk, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Ray Charles, Van Halen, Queen, Journey, and the Police. The most special portrait of all on the walls of this hallway is that of Mr. Egidio Bisceglia, our band leader. Thanks to the art department, walking down this hallway is like waltzing down memory lane, as you watch the musical medley of many different eras pass before your eyes. Home, Sweet Home Homework - Doesn't it seem as if teachers have a schedule that they follow? “On Thursday nights we’ll all give homework.” At 2:00 you go to your locker and three ten-pound books end up in your arms to be carried home: The locker is left empty. Have you ever watched where people do homework? Study hall is a pretty popular place - and if it gets finished there, you need not bring it home. The cafeteria is a good place too. It’s done here if you didn’t get through with it the night before. However, the most popular place to do homework is in homeroom. It’s amazing how much work can be done in fifteen minutes. It is often forgotten in the locker, on the kitchen table, or after stuffing it in your jean’s pocket, it goes through the wash and is ripped to shreds. Or maybe it’s just plain lost. No matter what your feelings are about homework, it’s popular among teachers and is here to stay. Just remember, teachers correct homework - and that takes time. Another type of homework is done by the House Carpentry Shop. Every year they build a house which is auctioned off the previous year. By building a house the students are able to apply the skills learned in their Freshman and Senior years. The house being bult this year is for Mr. and Mrs. James Despo. It’s a seven room Cape, with two bathrooms and a one door garage. It is located on Country Lane in Leominster. Under the supervision of Mr. Laetz, eight seniors; Donald Avery, Andrew Brideau, Dean Carter, Kerry Enright, Robert Griffen, William McDonald, Carlos Melendez, Patrick Richard, and twelve juniors are busy constructing this dream house for the happy couple. Oo oe =) a - O LL. ” oc Lu - ” Zz = O Lu =) As seniors we have reached the milestone of graduating and leaving Leominster High. Over the past year there have been other milestones, warm experiences that have been shared with friends, family, or experienced individually. One of the most memorable events occured at Doyle Field on November 24, 1983 when rivals Leominster and Fitchburg High met on the football field for the 100th time. Although Thanksgiving Day was rainy and T IME I Cth gloomy, nothing could dampen our spirits. Decked out in the traditional blue and white garb, a record number of fans showed their L.H.S. pride. Doyle Field was painted with the official 100th game logo, and sportscaster Bob Lobel came to witness ‘‘our’’ game, which made the 6:00 news. When you make the Boston news you know you’re pretty special. What a game it was! We believed in our winning team, and proved it to all who were there. L.H.S. was again victorious, winning 28-12. As it now stands, the L.H.S. hundred year record is 46 wins, 45 losses, and 9 ties - a record to be proud of. The 100th turkey day game is something unique to our class, and certainly a memory we will always treasure. I think it’s safe to say that most of us will return on Thanksgiving Days to come to cheer the future football teams, and re-capture the special feeling we shared that rainy day at Doyle Field. The Best Of Friends Friends, they are priceless. We’ve made so many along the way. We will cherish the memories of these treasures long after our high school days have passed. All of the special times we’ve shared with one another will forever be in our dreams. So many of these dreams have been created these past few years. Dreams of laughter and good times, happiness and cheer, have all come true here at Leominster High School. Our friendships began to bud long ago, and will continue to grow and bloom as time marches on. We love you seniors, oh yes we do. When you’re not near us we’re blue. Oh seniors we love you.” Three long years ago as we paraded around the halls of Leominster High School wearing a ridiculous body-length sign, we were silently planning our revenge. Finally seniors, we smugly chuckled at the unsuspecting freshmen as they signed up for the program. The program was implimented to ease the tensions of in-coming freshmen by paring them up with seniors. A different activity is planned for each day of the week long event. Among them are sign day and costume day. The favorite of all seniors though, is the “slave services’ the freshmen perform - carrying books, delivering lunch trays, holding doors, and most infamous of all - singing!! The week wraps up with a pizza party and dance, only this time the rolls are reversed and the seniors serve the freshman. Most students emerge from Freshman-Senior Orientation with many good memories and new friends. The freshman feel more at ease in their new environment while their seniors met many new friends and had a chance to indulge in some well-intentioned fun. It is an activity that is enjoyed by all. We will always remember our experiences during the week of activity - both as freshmen and as seniors. 124 Clockwise from top: Shane Jordan; Brian Matley, Sigundo Ramos; the 1933 LHS Football Team; the ‘‘Fitchburg High Cheerleaders’’; Coach Vaillette; Melanie Haligan 145) rae gr 4 i . a ‘ 4 ae : S- bah ‘ a is igh rat bh F | ae ae qi Clockwise from left to right: Lisa Ferrara, Bernard Mullen, Stacy Cipprotti; Setting up for the Senior Breakfast; Lisa Ferrara, Lisa Andreduski; Ronald Ebb; Kevin Donnelly; Mrs. Swawnson 126 Clockwise from Center: Jody Turano; Theodore Losey; The spirited Blue Devil fans; The cheering Football mothers; Billy DiNardo; Kevin Donnelly; Brian Mately as the Blue Devil 127 This years’ Winter Carnival broke February’s gloom with many activities such as the Interclass Snow Soccer Tournament, Punk Day, Prep Day, and Snow Sculpturing. The highlights of the season were the two wins over perennial powerhouse Brockton “hl archrival Fitchburg. The Brockton victory was the most impressive because it occured at the Boxers home field, Marciano Stadium before a large partison crowd. The outcome seemed grim, but with 1:21 left on the clock, quarterback Dave Palazzi handed the football off to fullback Rick Dandini who glided his way through the right side of the offensive line. The senior linemen, John SE atl Ed Lagoy and Bob Salvatelli blew open the Boxer’s defensive line allowing Dandini to juke and fake his He toa touchdown. Throughout the season, the team was offensively led by seniors Doug Hatfield, John Connors, Mark Burnette, Sean Dupee, Bob Penning, Dan Valliere, Jamie Perla, Scott Kartanos, Craig Long and Larry Cordio. Juniors Jonathan Lanciani and Dave Cormier also made fine contributions to the team. The defense was held together by Dave McNally, Dave McIntosh, Pat Malone, Mike Fusco, Gary Farr, Roger LaFleur, Bob Fournier, Chris Route and the famed ‘““M M”’ gang of Mike Valera, Mike Lizotte, Mike Flanagan and Mike Andrzejewski. On Thanksgiving Day, the glorified 100th meeting between the Fitchburg Reed Raiders and the Leominster Blue Devils, took place in front of 12,000 fans at Doyle Field. The Blue Devils dominated the Raiders throughout the game. Mike Keogh preted the offensive attack and received the most valuable player of the game for his efforts. The defense succeeded in holding the Raiders to low yardage and knocked out the starting quarterback. The Leominster victory put them on top of the series with an overall record of 46-45-9. Even thought the team lost two games, the members showed great character and team spirit. The Blue Devils, along with the school, should be tremendously proud of the way the 1983 Blue Devil’s carried on the long winning tradition of Leominster Varsity Football. Tri-captains John Connors, Doug Hatfield, and John Normandin were a force on the team considered to be the most improved in the state. They set an example for the team: Connors placed sixth in the sectional tournament, Hatfield posted 10 victories, and Normandin pinned six victims. The most pleasant suprise of the season was Jaques Thebeau, who came back from a disappointing season last year not only to be named the most valuable player on the team, but also to be ranked 10th in the state. Senior MIP Fran Guillmette came back from an injury and battled his way to an undefeated season. Chris Rogers and Rodney Somma also contributed to the team. Student Council was working before school started this year, with the Open House in August, where the incoming freshmen - were given tours of the school. The social scene kicked off in Septem- - ber with the Four-Way Class Dance. The dance was run by Student Council and the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes and one-fourth of the profit was given to help out the freshmen treasury. November was named “Spirit Month’, and the hundredth meeting between Leominster and Fitchburg in Thanksgiving. The Blue Devil spirit was running high. Devil fans showed their true blue colors with the Spirit Chain and the Hall Decorating Contest. Mayor Girouard judged the event and the Seniors took top prize. After Spirit Month STATE DELEGATES STUDENT COUNCIL was Students In Government Week. Lectures on govern- ment were given and Student Council held its Mock Mayoral Debate and Election. Social Studies classes registered and elected incumbant Mayor Girouard once again to office. The Winter Carnival in February added some life to the dead of winter with events such as the infamous Snow Soccer Tour- nament and Dress-Up Days. The Massachusetts Assosiation of Student Council Convention was held at Dunfey’s in Hyannis in March. This three day convention provided an opportunity for Leominster councilors to learn how to make a more effective council, and to get ideas on new and different fundraisers and events. The month of May brought the Student Council to a close with Interclass Plays, City Officials for a Day, and Spring Week, which is another week that includes more dress-up days, and the Street Hockey Tournament. This year’s senior council members have left their mark on L.H.S. ’s student government. — For years to come, the students of Leominster High School will follow the class of ’84’s precedents. 185 BUSINESS ED. In the past fifty years, man has learned more about his universe than he had in previous thousands of years of his existence. Accompanying this increased knowledge is a growth in technology which permits him to do his work better and faster than ever before. But this knowledge and technology has made his world more complex. Industrial economics have affected the environment so that there is now heated debate about the ‘‘greenhouse effect’’, and nuclear technology stirs explosive discus- sion about the future of the world. The Science Department strives to give students an understanding of the world, of advances in science, and of their relation to these advances. Up to four years of study in Spanish and five years in French are offered by the foreign language department at Leominster High School. Learning a foreign language is beneficial to every student for many reasons. First, one acquires the primary benefit, the ability to converse in a foreign language. Moreover, knowledge of a second language opens job opportunities for a student, increases his her mastery of English, meets entrance requirements of many colleges, and makes it easier to learn other languages. After a brief absence, instruction of foreign languages will return next year t o Carter and Gallagher junior high schools. The department expects this and other factors to increase enrollments in French and Spanish courses and to hopefully allow for the reinstitution of many languages previously offered at Leominster High.
